Trainer Pearce Handed Fine, Suspension For Clenbuterol Positive

Trainer Penny Pearce was slapped with a $500 fine and 15-day suspension by New Jersey stewards after Top Notch Racing's Royal Coup returned a positive for the prohibited substance clenbuterol, a bronchodilator, in post-race blood and urine samples following his win in the first race at Monmouth Park May 29.

The Saturday ruling was posted on the Association of Racing Commissioners International website.

Royal Coup, a 7-year-old Stephen Got Even gelding who won the one-mile & 70-yard race by a head at 5-1 odds, was subsequently disqualified from the win and the first-place purse of $45,000 in the $75,000 first-level allowance race for New Jersey-breds.

Pearce, who waived her right to a hearing, was cited for violations pertaining to acts detrimental to racing and medication rules, as well as the trainer responsibilities rule.

Pearce's suspension starts Friday and runs through July 16.
