Stradivarius Sets New European Record For Group Wins In Yorkshire Cup

Horses like Stradivarius don't come around very often. The superstar stayer oozed class on the Knavesmire once more this Friday, on his way to landing a hat-trick of Yorkshire Cups, and in turn breaking a European record for most Group wins with 18 on his resume.

The previous record was held by Cirrus Des Aigles, a gelding who won 17 group races between 2009-15.

Frankie Dettori and Stradivarius are one of the great modern day duos, and the pair delivered once more in front of the York crowd on what is certain to be a last appearance at the track for Bjorn Nelson's Stradivarius.

The field of five turned the bend with Thunderous leading and Stradivarius sitting in fourth alongside the well-backed Search For A Song. We were soon graced with one of the most iconic sights in recent times, Dettori back on the bridle, guiding Stradivarius to the front, despite looking in trouble three furlongs out. The 8-year-old kicked on to win by a length in the first race of his final season.

Stradivarius, owned by Bjorn Nielsen, is the winning most horse in the QIPCO British Champions Series, as he registered his 16th win under the umbrella, seven ahead of the mighty Frankel. Having previously finished third place on QIPCO British Champions Day in October, the great stayer returned in a moment to savor.

Stradivarius' next aim looks to be the Ascot Gold Cup, in the search of emulating the great Yeats who landed a record four wins in the races. Whether he wins that or not, this horse will go down as one of the greatest horses of all time, and one to remember for Frankie Dettori and trainer John Gosden.
