Jockey David Cabrera ended the extended holiday racing week at Oaklawn Park taking the first four races on Monday adding to his two wins on Sunday and four wins on Saturday for a total of ten. The win total earned Cabrera the honor of Jockey of the Week for Feb. 14 through Feb. 21. The honor, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.
On the heels of winning his fourth straight riding title at Remington Park, David Cabrera entered the 2021-2022 meet at Oaklawn Park with the intention of winning his first local riding title. His ten wins last week keeps him in hot pursuit of that goal.
Cabrera and his agent, Joe Santos, make it a point to ride for several trainers. Many times, on any given race day, Cabrera's mounts are each for a different trainer. This past week he rode four winners for Karl Broberg, two for Ron Moquett and one each for Don Von Hemel, Wesley Hawley, Tim Martin and John Ortiz.
A native of Mexico, Cabrera has been riding professionally in the United States since 2013 making Remington Park his base. His other tracks include Lone Star Park where he was leading jockey and apprentice jockey in 2014, Sam Houston Race Park and Prairie Meadows where he won his 1,000th career win on Sept. 9, 2019. Career win 1,500 came at Remington Park on Nov. 13, 2021.
Currently, Cabrera sits in a tie with Francisco Arrieta for second place in the Oaklawn Park jockey standings with 30 wins, just one behind leader Ricardo Santana, Jr. Cabrera's mounts this season at Oaklawn Park have earned more than $1.5 million. His two stakes wins to date this meet include the Fifth Season aboard Rated R Superstar for trainer Federico R. Villafranco and the American Beauty on Miss Mosaic for trainer Ben Colebrook.
Cabrera's statistics for the week were 26-10-4-0 for a 53.8 percent in-the-money rate and $300,720 in total purse earnings.
Other nominees for Jockey of the Week were Victor Carrasco with two stakes wins at Laurel, Trevor McCarthy who won eight races for the week and a stakes race at Aqueduct, Flavien Prat with two stakes wins at Santa Anita, and Joel Rosario who won the G2 Risen Star at Fair Grounds.
