Hong Kong's hopes of a second win in South Korea came unstuck Sunday afternoon as Japanese duo Remake and former U.S. classic starter Crown Pride collected both Group 3 features on a warm afternoon at a packed-to-the-rafters Seoul Racecourse.
Squeezed for running room as he left barrier 11, Hong Kong's Duke Wai was forced to settle at the rear before steadily making ground mid-race under jockey Damian Lane. Turning for home, Duke Wai took the widest route and closed impressively, however, it was too little too late as Remake, guided by Kawada Yuga, won by four lengths while setting a course record of 1:10 for 1,200 meters (about six furlongs).
South Korea's Beolmaui Star crossed the line second, while third place in the went to the Japan's Yoshito Yahagi-trained Bathrat Leon. Last year's winner Eoma Eoma finished fifth in the field of 15.
A 4-year-old colt by Lani, Remake is trained by Shintani Koichi for owner Koji Maeda.
In the following race, Teruya Yoshida's Crown Pride, who competed in the 2022 Kentucky Derby (G1), streaked clear to a 10-length triumph to seal Japan's big race double in the Korea Cup going 1,800 meters (about 1 1/8 miles). Like Remake, Crown Pride was ridden by Yuga and is trained by Koichi.
Japan finished one-two in the race, with Gloria Mundi grabbing second. Last year's victor, Winner's Man, was third, while Success Macho was fourth in the 15-horse field.
The winning time of the Korea Cup was 1:51.50.
Crown Pride is a 4-year-old Reach The Crown colt.
