New York regulatory veterinarian Dr. Steven Lascher has been issued an $8,000 fine for failing to administer Lasix to four horses on May 19, 2023 at Belmont Park, which resulted in a six-horse field scratching down to two horses.
A May 25 ruling from the New York State Gaming Commission indicates that Lascher failed “to follow proper lasix procedures, necessitating the scratches of horses racing in the 3rd race on May 19th 2023 at Belmont Park.”
Lascher was fined $2,000 per instance of missed Lasix administration.
This was the second such incident for Lascher in the last 12 months. The seventh race at Belmont Park on June 9, 2022, ran with just two entries after Lascher did not show up to the barns of four horses in time to administer the anti-bleeding medication; the vet was fined $1,000 per instance in this case.
According to the Thoroughbred Daily News, Lascher is no longer employed by the New York Racing Association.
