Racing at Laurel Park has been canceled “indefinitely,” per an announcement by the Maryland Jockey Club.
The one-sentence statement, released Friday morning via the MJC's social media accounts, did not elaborate on the reasoning behind the suspension of racing.
The track last held live racing on Thursday, when according to the Daily Racing Form, a horse was euthanized on the track due to injury during the fourth race. Another horse was pulled up and vanned off in the race that followed.
Laurel was scheduled to race on Friday and Saturday.
The track recently canceled live racing on April 8 “out of an abundance of caution to do a full evaluation of the racing surface.” The track was open on April 11 for galloping and jogging only.
In summer 2021, Laurel Park underwent a four-month multi-million-dollar reconstruction of its dirt surface. Last September, the track maintenance crew added some clay to portions of the track's dirt surface—mainly from the half-mile pole to the eighth pole to make the composition consistent with the rest of the surface heading into the cold-weather months.
This story is developing and will be updated.
Please be advised racing has been canceled until further notice. #MJC
