Santa Anita: Saturday’s Mandatory Payout Pick 6 Pool Could Reach $3 Million

With the pari-mutuel table set for a tremendous 12-race card on Santa Anita Handicap Day, Saturday, Santa Anita Park will have a mandatory payout in the popular 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 Jackpot, which will likely ensure the prospect of a $3 million Rainbow 6 pool, according to track officials.

Presented by Yaamava Resort & Casino, the Grade 1, $500,000 Santa Anita Handicap, to be run for the 86th time on Saturday, will be contested by nine older horses at a mile and one quarter.  The Bob Baffert-conditioned Defunded, who will be ridden by Juan Hernandez, has been installed as the 7-2 morning line favorite.

With 12 races on tap, race seven, with an approximate post time of 3 p.m. PT, is leg one of the six-race sequence that offers players a robust average field size of 9.3 horses per race.

With the storied Big Cap anchoring Saturday's Rainbow 6 as race 12, the Grade 1, $500,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (turf) has been carded as race 11 with nine older horses as well.  One of four Phil D'Amato trainees in the field, Irish-bred Hong Kong Harry is the 9-5 morning line favorite with Flavien Prat up.

Special early first post time on Big Cap Day is set for 12 noon, with admission gates opening at 10 a.m.  Two additional graded stakes, the Grade 2, $200,000 Buena Vista for older fillies and mares at one mile on turf and the Grade 2, $400,000 San Felipe, for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles, will be run as races five and six.
