Freshened Pletcher Pair Back On Familiar Turf For Saturday’s Tropical Park Oaks

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher will be represented in Saturday's $125,000 Tropical Park Oaks by a pair of fillies who will be back on familiar footing on Gulfstream Park's turf course.

Cairo Consort was a multiple-stakes winner last season at Gulfstream Park after being purchased by Repole Stable and Town and Country Racing LLC for $875,000 at the 2022 Keeneland November sale. Grade 1 stakes-placed in the Natalma at Woodbine and in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf for her former owners, Cairo Consort won at first asking in mile Ginger Brew Jan. 7. The daughter of Cairo Prince came right back to win the 1 1/16-mile Sweetest Chant (G3) Feb. 4 with an impressive stretch rally that followed a terrible start.

“She seemed to do well at Gulfstream. She had one really remarkable race in the Sweetest Chant where she threw her head at the start and seemed like she blew any chance of being successful at that stage,” Pletcher said. “She made a remarkable run to get up to win.”

Cairo Consort ran out of ground in the March 4 Herecomesthebride (G3) at Gulfstream, in which she was beaten by a head by next-out stakes winners Danse Macabre and Papilio. The gray Kentucky-bred filly went on to finish second, a neck behind Papilio in the Appalachian (G2) at Keeneland before finishing off the board in the Edgewood (F2) at Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Derby (G1) undercard.

“She really ran well four of five times. She didn't seem to fire in the Edgewood. We decided to give her a break at that point with the idea that we'd have her ready for Gulfstream where she seemed to like it,” Pletcher said. “She looks good. She's filled out a bit. She's grown up. She's been training well. We'd expect her to run well off the layoff.”

Irad Ortiz Jr., who was aboard for all three of Cairo Consort's Gulfstream starts, returns for the Tropical Park Oaks.

Alpha Bella broke her maiden in her fourth career start in her turf debut a year ago in a mile maiden special weight event at Gulfstream Park. The daughter of Triple Crown champion Justify came back to finish just three-quarters of a length short while finishing second behind Cairo Consort in the Sweetest Chant. The Don Alberto Stable homebred was beaten by just a neck while finishing second in the Tampa Oaks (G3) in her next start. She finished off the board in two subsequent starts before going on a break in May.

“It looked like she was going to win the Sweetest Chant. She hung in there until Cairo Consort got her late,” Pletcher said.

Alpha Bella returned to action Aug. 10 at Saratoga, where she scored by 22 ¾ lengths over her only rival in an off-the-turf optional claiming allowance. The versatile filly came back to finish third on turf at Colonial Downs in the Virginia Oaks, just a half-length behind the winner. In her most recent start, she finished fourth following a wide trip in the Sands Point (G2) at Aqueduct Oct. 14.

“She's very consistent. She shows up and runs consistent every time,” Pletcher said. “We freshened her up a little bit. She's coming into the race in good order.”

Luis Saez, who was aboard Alpha Bella in her two Gulfstream starts as well as her Saratoga romp, has the call.

Pletcher is one of four trainers who have each entered a pair of fillies in the Tropical Park Oaks, joined by Chad Brown, Josie Carroll and Graham Motion.

Bradley Thoroughbreds, Belmar Racing and Breeding Stable, Cambron Racing LLC and Laura Leigh Stable's Implicated and Klaravich Stable Inc.'s Startup Mentality are scheduled to represent Brown in the 12-horse field, while Brown-trained Notinamillionyears is also-eligible.

Implicated, who closed out her 2022 campaign with a victory in the Chelsey Flower before going to the sidelines for nearly a year, is coming off a victory at Aqueduct in the Pebbles (G3) in her second start back.

Startup Mentality closed well to finish third in the Pebbles, three-quarters of a length behind her stablemate. The daughter of Kingman was coming off a four-month layoff following a debut victory at Monmouth Park.

Tyler Gaffalione is scheduled to ride Implicated, while Jose Ortiz has the call on Startup Mentality.

Mark Dodson's Speed Trap and Di Scola Boys Stable's Dolce Sopresa, will represent Carroll. Speed Trap is a daughter of Bernardini who is scheduled to make her turf debut Saturday coming off a two-length optional claiming allowance on Tapeta at Woodbine. Dolce Sopresa is a daughter of Maclean's Music who has won two of three starts on dirt prior to a third-place finish in the Bessarabian (G2) on Tapeta.

Joe Bravo has the call on Speed Trap, while Paco Lopez is slated to ride Dolce Sopresa.

Motion will be represented by Calumet Farm's Sun Bee, who had won two in a row before finishing off the board in her stakes debut in the Dueling Grounds Oaks at Kentucky Downs last time out; and Wertheimer and Frere's Zipadoo, who will make her stakes debut Saturday after finishing no worse than third in four turf starts.

Jorge Ruiz is named on Sun Bee, while Hall of Famer John Velazquez has the return call on Zipadoo.

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Tango Uniform Racing LLC and Steven Rocco's Breath Away, who captured the Sanibel Island at Gulfstream Park April 1, enters the Tropical Park Oaks off a third-place finish in the Nov. 5 Autumn Miss (G3) at Santa Anita.

Vincent Cheminaud is scheduled to ride the Christophe Clement-trained English-bred filly for the first time Saturday.

Holly Crest Farm's Riding Pretty, Tracy Farmer's Colonial Pursuit, and Ken Ramsey's Be My Sunshine round out the field.

‘Strong Results’: Woodbine Wagering Down From 2022, But Handle Is Second Largest Seasonal Total In History

Woodbine Entertainment announced Wednesday that the 2023 Thoroughbred season produced an all-sources handle of $613,125,180 CAD (US$460,325,188). This is the second largest single-season handle in Woodbine's history, but down $8 million from 2022.

“Our 2023 Thoroughbred racing meet produced very strong results thanks to our exciting racing product, the strength of the Woodbine brand, and the hard work of our team and the entire horse racing community,” said Michael Copeland, CEO, Woodbine Entertainment. “The results are especially encouraging considering the industry trends our sport is facing with increased competition from sports betting, growing purses in some jurisdictions largely due to ancillary gaming revenues, extreme weather factors that have cancelled an unprecedented number of race cards, North American horse supply, and larger macroeconomic factors like inflation and the uncertainty of the U.S. dollar.

“While we are proud of our results, we cannot be complacent, and we need to focus on the industry trends and other opportunities that will help us navigate these headwinds.”

In 2023, a total of 1,180 races were contested over 128 dates of racing compared to 1,198 races over 132 dates in 2022. Woodbine ran four less dates and 18 less races in 2023 due to an unprecedented number of cancelled race cards (5) because of extreme heat and poor air quality caused by smoke from forest fires across Canada.

The average field size for those races was 8.2, the same as 2022, and above the industry average.

In Ontario, wagering on Woodbine Thoroughbred racing by customers across the province was down 6.2 percent ($81.8 million this season vs $87.2 million in 2022).

The decline in home market wagering was partially mitigated by a foreign market handle of $512 million, a decrease from $515 million in 2022, though still a remarkable gain from the previous record of $420 million in 2021. The $512 million in foreign market handle was supported by a strong U.S. dollar.

The average handle per race in 2023 was a record $519,597. This is an increase of $580 per race from 2022.

To address the increased competition from an emerging licensed sports betting market, Woodbine Entertainment announced a partnership with global sports betting leader bet365 prior to The King's Plate. It includes the integration of pari-mutuel horse racing into bet365's licensed sportsbook platform in Ontario. Woodbine plans to integrate its racing product in additional licensed Ontario sports books in 2024 in hopes of generating increased handle in the province and engagement with a new audience.

“We are operating on a very solid foundation that positions us well to manage the current industry and economic trends,” added Copeland. “We also have opportunities before us that have not been fully realized yet, like the integration of racing into licensed sportsbooks, which will have a positive impact.”

Key Highlights

  • Second highest single-season all-sources handle ($613M) in Woodbine history
  • Second highest single-season foreign handle ($512M) in Woodbine history
  • Record-breaking average per-race handle of $519,597
  • Average field size of 8.2 (above North American industry average)
  • Woodbine saw the return of the King's Plate for the first time in over 70 years with winner Paramount Prince. The total all-sources wagering on King's Plate day was a record $18,127,049
  • The integration of pari-mutuel racing into bet365's licensed online sports book in Ontario

The 2024 Woodbine Thoroughbred season is scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 27. The 165th running of The King's Plate will take place on Saturday, August 17.

‘We’ve Been Aggressive’: Staton Flurry Chasing ‘Bucket-List’ Oaklawn Owner Title

An Arkansan leads the Oaklawn owner's standings through the first five days of the 2023-2024 meeting, but it's not record-setting John Ed Anthony or 2022-2023 champions Heath and Sheena Campbell.

It's Staton Flurry of Hot Springs.

Flurry's scattered operation has already produced four victories from 11 starters. Anthony, Oaklawn's all-time winningest owner, is second with three victories.

“I'm thinking of this meet kind of as a car race, a NASCAR race,” Flurry, 33, said Sunday. “These first two weeks are like fall. Hopefully, we can start up front and have a little lead going into the rest of the season. We've been aggressive on some of these. They're winning, but they're not blowing the fields away. So, we're kind of in the right spots.”

Flurry said he has approximately 20 horses in training. Most are at Oaklawn with five trainers – Brad Cox, Cipriano Contreras, Dan Ward, Matt Shirer and Kevin Martin. Flurry also has a handful of horses with trainer Jonas B. Gibson, who is based at Louisiana Downs.

Flurry has already teamed for two victories at the meeting with Gibson (Therideofalifetime and Fightn' Ready) and Contreras (Captain Jack and Oh My Gawd). All were short-priced winners and competing at dramatically lower class levels than when Flurry claimed them earlier in 2023.

For example, Flurry claimed Oh My Gawd for $50,000 Oct. 12 at Keeneland. Oh My Gawd ($2.80) broke her maiden Sunday for a $12,500 claiming price.

“I hate that we are dropping them like we are,” Flurry said. “But when they're winning by a length, length and a half, instead of running off the screen, that tells you they're in the right spot.”

Flurry's hot start is much different than last season's meeting,, when he made his initial push to secure an owner's title at his home track for the first time. Through the first 38 days of racing, he generated only three victories from 35 starts. Flurry closed strongly, tying for fourth with 10 victories from 61 starts, a single-season Oaklawn personal best. That momentum has continued in 2023-2024.

“We've gotten off to a good start,” Flurry said.

Raised in the historic Trivista neighborhood that borders Oaklawn's north parking lot, Flurry recorded his first career victory as an owner Feb. 17, 2013, at Oaklawn with the Cox-trained Full Steam Ahead. Flurry said winning an Oaklawn owner's title is a “bucket-list item.”

“If it happens this year, I'll never do it again,” Flurry said. “It's one of those that I want to say I did. Knock it off the list and never chase again because it's time consuming. It's stressful.”

Flurry has 114 career victories as a sole owner, including 41 at Oaklawn, according to Equibase, racing's official data gathering organization. Oh My Gawd represented Flurry's career-best 20th victory overall this year. He won 19 races as a sole owner in 2015.

Flurry is best known for campaigning millionaire multiple Grade 1 winner Shedaresthedevil in partnership.

2024 Florida-Bred Incentives At Gulfstream Park Released

An unprecedented $2.1 million will fill the Florida-Bred Incentive Fund (FBIF) for overnight race conditions to start the new year, the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association (FTBOA), Gulfstream Park and the Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association said in a combined release Wednesday.

Independently, the FTBOA revealed that an additional $1.3 million of Florida-bred race incentives on Gulfstream Park stakes and selected overnights to complement the expanded FBIF and longstanding Florida-Sire Sire Stakes 2-year-old series is on tap.

The combined programs, totaling $4.6 million, are substantially enabled by HB 7063, a 2023 Florida tax package directing more than $55 million into the Thoroughbred industry over two years.

In addition to the FBIF, the total pool of $5,000 bonuses for 2-year-old Florida Sire Stakes eligible winners in maiden special weights will triple to $300,000 from the $100,000 total bonus pool offered in prior years.

In overnight conditions, the FTBOA will boost maiden special weights, allowances and handicaps with $5,000 win bonuses for Florida-breds in open races and Florida Sire Stakes eligible winners in restricted races.
