Maclean’s Music Firster Frolics In the Mud at Aqueduct

EL CAPI (c, 2, Maclean's Music–Nightlife Baby, by Flatter) was chilly on the board at 13-1 from a morning line of 6-1, but ran them off their feet in Saturday's second race at Aqueduct to open his account in impressive fashion. Hustled away from the inside gate by Jose Gomez, the bay was in front after 100 yards and had already opened an imposing advantage through a quarter in :22.03. Still going great guns after a half-mile in a slick :44.73, El Capi was under a vigorous hand ride through the final furlong and was well clear under the line. Hop Sing (Curlin), the well-backed 8-5 favorite, was off slowly, was deftly angled to the inside by Luis Saez on the turn and just managed to outfinish $1-million KEESEP graduate Conquest Warrior (City of Light), who was last into stride, took an overland route on the turn and stayed on gamely to be third at a lightly regarded 10-1. Having most recently sold for $220,000 at the OBS March Sale, El Capi had made three previous trips through a sales ring. A $35,000 Keeneland November weanling, he fetched the identical amount at last year's Fasig-Tipton February sale and made $75,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale last October. When mated with A.P. Indy-line dams, Maclean's Music has sired two of his four Grade I winners–Jackie's Warrior and Cloud Computing–while GSW & GISP Dance to the Music holds the same distinction. Fellow Grade III winner Classic Rock has a second dam by A.P. Indy. Nightlife Baby's foal of 2022, a colt by Good Magic, was a $60,000 KEENOV weanling purchase by Machmer Hall that was knocked down to Oracle Bloodstock for $230,000 at KEESEP this year. The weanling relation is another colt by Good Magic and Nightlife Baby was most recently bred back to Maclean's Music. Pair of £200,000 Lots Top Goffs Gold Cup Sale

The inaugural Goffs UK Coral Gold Cup Sale of young National Hunt prospects was held after racing at Newbury on Saturday with 18 of the 21 horses offered sold for a total of £2,145,000.

Two horses shared top billing at £200,000. The Muhtahir (GB) filly Half Past Tipsy (Ire) (lot 6) was bought from Sam Curling's Skehanagh Stables by Gavin Cromwell after winning a 4-year-old mares' maiden point-to-point last month. 

Matching her leading price later in the select catalogue was The Bluesman (Fr) (Crillon {Fr}) (lot 18), a 4-year-old half-brother to listed-winning hurdler Fiumcino (Fr) Sageburg {Ire}), who won his sole start between the flags for Denis Murphy's Ballyboy Stables. He was bought by agent Tom Malone on behalf of champion trainer Paul Nicholls.

The average and the median prices were closely aligned at £119,167 and £110,000, respectively.

Longtime Maryland Trainer Ronald Cartwright Dies At 93

Ronald “Ronnie” C. Cartwright, a Maryland-based trainer who conditioned multiple graded-stakes winners throughout his career, passed away Nov. 11 at the age of 93.

A steeplechase jockey who then trained from the late 1960's through 2005, Cartwright won almost 700 races and his horses earned more than $13 million. His graded-stakes winners included Mz. Zill Bear (Salutely), Castelets (King's Bishop), Miss Slewpy (Slewpy), Palliser Bay (Frosty the Snowman) and Mymet (Mehmet).

“I've been in this for 60 years and will miss it,” Cartwright said soon after he retired in 2005. “It has been a great run. I've had a really good life and enjoyed this very much. I had a lot of nice horses and had a good time.”

“Ronnie was a horsemen's horseman–very old school,” said Maryland-based breeder/owner Jay Williamson. “He did it the right way, and he had the right owners. When horses need time off, they got time off. That's tough to do in today's environment. He was an all-around good person. Everybody liked Ronnie.”

A Celebration of Life for Cartwright will be held at Laurel Park on the first floor of the clubhouse Dec. 19 at 11:30 a.m.

Group 1-Winning Owner Theresa Marnane Dies

The bloodstock world is united in grief with the Marnane family following the death of Theresa Marnane on Saturday at the age of 61.

An immensely popular member of the racing and breeding community, Marnane, along with her husband Con and daughters Amy and Olivia, was widely successful in many sectors of the business. The family's Bansha House Stables in Tipperary has long been successful at the breeze-up sales, with the top-class winners Rio De La Plata, Fleeting Spirit (Ire) and Amadeus Wolf (Ire) being among their many graduates.

They are also successful owners and breeders. Theresa Marnane's yellow-and-black silks have been carried by a number of good horses, including the G1 Racing Post Trophy winner Palace Episode and most recently the G3 Marble Hill S. winner Givemethebeatboys (Ire). She was the leading owner of two-year-olds in France on a number of occasions, with the victories invariably coming with inexpensively bought youngsters selected by Con and Amy Marnane.

It was the 2017 G3 Albany S. winner Different League (Fr) who sparked perhaps the most memorable celebrations when beating subsequent multiple Group 1 winner Alpha Centauri (Ire) at Royal Ascot. Bought as a foal for €8,000, the daughter of Dabirsim (Fr) won her first three starts for the Marnanes and was then placed in both the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Cheveley Park S before being sold for 1.5 million gns to Coolmore and Peter Brant.

Different League's Royal Ascot victory came four years after Theresa, a solicitor by trade, had undergone cancer treatment for the first time, and her success on racing's biggest stage was enjoyed wildly, both on the day and with a huge party at the family's Tipperary home later that summer. The couple celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in May, and they were rarely seen apart: Theresa's warm and ever-smiling presence perfectly complementing her husband's natural exuberance.

“I met Theresa 43 years ago at Danny O'Connell's, when she was riding out there,” said Con Marnane on Saturday.

“We've just been overwhelmed by the support of everyone in the racing and breeding industry, the breeze-up consignors, the trainers, owners and jockeys. She was a very special person to so many people. Everyone loved her.”

He added, “There will be a celebration of Theresa's life at Bansha House on Tuesday after mass in our local church at 11am. We would love for as many of her friends to be there as possible and for those who can't we will make details available to follow the service online.”

The loss of Theresa Marnane will be mourned by her many friends in racing, and especially by Con, Amy, Olivia and her extended family, to whom we offer our sincere condolences.
