Tattersalls Ireland November NH Sale Underway With Springhill Stud Dispersal

The Tattersalls Ireland November NH Sale got underway on Saturday with the 36-lot dispersal of Springhill Stud. The batch were offered by Breda Lennon, the widow of the late horseman Kieran Lennon.

David L'Estrange went to €75,000 for lot 35, a 2-year-old gelding by Getaway (Ger). Out of Morning Run (Ire) (King's Theatre {Ire}), he was previously purchased by Lennon for €28,000 at the November NH Sale in 2021.

“He looks a long-term project, he is a big horse!” L'Estrange said. “He looks all over a chaser and might make up into a point-to-pointer to sell on or I might keep him to race. He will go to Cleaboy Stud from here.”

Second on the buyers' sheet was a grey gelding by Capri (Ire) (lot 22). He attracted a bid of €62,000 from Cleaboy Stud. He is a half-brother to three NH stakes winners including Grade 2 winner The Dutchman (Ire) (King's Theatre {Ire}).

The third-highest price was lot 3, a yearling gelding by Crystal Ocean (GB), who was purchased by Ian Ferguson. He is a half-sister to G3 Cork Grand National winner Mattock Ranger (Ire) (Oscar {Ire}).

“Kieran was a good friend and he was very lucky for me, I bought Banbridge from him,” he said. “I like this yearling–he has been bought as a racing prospect for a client. He is coming home to me now and he will stay there until he is broken in.”

“Kieran always bought a nice foal and he could go out there blindfolded and buy a horse; he had so many nice ones through his hands.”

Overall, the dispersal brought €734,500 for an average of €20,986 and a median of €15,500. Only one of the 36 lots was reported as unsold.

The November National Hunt Sale continues on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and runs through Thursday, Nov. 16.

She Can’t Sing To Bid For Second Chilukki Victory In Main Track Return

Lothenbach Stables' She Can't Sing will attempt to defend her victory in last year's Chilukki Stakes (G) when she meets eight fillies and mares entered for this year's edition of the $300,000 one-mile race next Saturday at Churchill Downs.

The Chilukki is carded as Race 10 of 11 with a post time of 5:35 p.m. (ET). First post is 1 p.m.

Trained by Chris Block, She Can't Sing is an eight-time winner from 38 starts. The 6-year-old daughter of Bernardini has won four of those races at Churchill Downs, including her 3¾-length triumph in last year's Chilukki.

Block opted to return She Can't Sing to the turf following her Chilukki victory on Churchill's main track and she finished fourth in the Tom Benson Memorial at Fair Grounds and third in the Lady Canterbury at Canterbury Park. The Chilukki will be She Can't Sing's first start since her fourth-place effort in the Romacaca Handicap in early August on the turf at Hawthorne. Brian Hernandez Jr., who rode She Can't Sing in last year's Chilukki, has the return call from post No. 5.

Block also has entered Richard Perkin's 14-time winner Oeuvre, who's set to make her first start against graded stakes company. The 4-year-old Illinois-bred daughter of Shackleford is on a three-race win streak with victories in the Jean Elizabeth Handicap at Hawthorne and consecutive allowance wins at Kentucky Downs and Keeneland. Jockey Jareth Loveberry will be in the irons from post 4.

Trainer Bill Mott, a two-time Chilukki winner, aims for his third victory in the race with 2022 Gazelle (G3) winner Nostalgic. Ridden by Florent Geroux from the rail, Godolphin's homebred Nostalgic finished 10th in the 2022 Longines Kentucky Oaks (GI), just ahead of fellow Chilukki rival Hidden Connection, who finished 12th. Nostalgic, a Medaglia d'Oro filly, began her 4-year-old season in mid-July, finishing second to Sixtythreecaliber in a third-level allowance contest. Four weeks later she defeated five rivals in allowance company and would go on to finish third to Randomized and A Mo Reay six weeks later in the Beldame (GII).

Mott previously won the Chilukki with Obligatory (2021) and Feasibility Study (1997).

Here is the complete Chilukki field from the rail out (with jockey and trainer): Nostalgic (Geroux, Mott); Raindrops on Roses (Joe Talamo, Pat Huffman); Hidden Connection (Tyler Gaffalione, Bret Calhoun); Oeuvre (Loveberry, Block); She Can't Sing (Hernandez, Block); Braganza (Declan Cannon, Eddie Kenneally); Falconet (Luis Saez, Todd Pletcher); Be Like Water (Martin Garcia, Vicki Oliver); and Hot and Sultry (Ricardo Santana Jr., Norm Casse).

Geraldina Needs Very Best To Defend QE II Cup

Sunday Racing's Geraldina (Jpn), the product of Japanese Horses of the Year Maurice (Jpn) and Gentildonna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) will have to lift her game to a level not yet seen in 2023 if she is to become the third horse to go back-to-back in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Kyoto Racecourse Sunday afternoon.

The 5-year-old was a cracking third to Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) in the G1 Arima Kinen to end a fruitful 2022 campaign, but it's been tougher sledding this term, as she has finished outside the top three in each of her four starts. Her fourth-place effort to Equinox in the June 25 G1 Takarazuka Kinen was full of merit, as she came from a long way back to finish fourth, and perhaps she needed the run when only sixth to the progressive Rousham Park (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) and Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) in the G2 Sankei Sho All Comers S. Sept. 24. The visiting Ryan Moore has the mount Sunday and knows a thing or two about Geraldina's parents.

“I won Grade 1 races on both her sire and her dam and that is something special for me,” Moore said. “Even though I've never ridden Geraldina, I've watched the video of last year's race and will look forward to riding her on Sunday.”

Gentildonna defeated Verxina (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) into second in all three legs of the Filly Triple Crown in 2012, and the latter–narrowly beaten at odds-on in this event that season–is also represented here by Divina (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}). A close fourth to Songline (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) in the G1 Victoria Mile earlier this season, the bay, owned by former American professional baseball player Kaz Sasaki, exits a nose defeat of Rouge Eveil (Jpn) (Just a Way {Jpn}) in the G2 Fuchu Himba S. at Tokyo Oct. 14.

This year's Classic form is represented by Harper (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), second to Liberty Island (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) in the G1 Yushun Himba and a latest third in the G1 Shuka Sho Oct. 15. Brede Weg (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) was working her way through the lower grades over the summer, but announced herself as a potential top-class mare with a narrow defeat to future Shuka Sho runner-up Masked Diva (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) in the G2 Rose S. in September.

Sheikh Fahad's Art House (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) was a winner in Group 3 company in January and was last seen finishing a good fourth behind Through Seven Seas (Jpn) (Dream Journey {Jpn}) at Group 3 level in March. The latter gave Equinox all he could handle in the Takarazuka Kinen and went on to be a meritorious fourth to Cartier Horse of the Year Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}) in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Muth, Prince Of Monaco, Mirahmadi Among Baffert Nominees To Los Al Futurity

Muth, runner-up to upset winner Fierceness in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) Nov. 3 at Santa Anita, is among the nominees for trainer Bob Baffert for the $200,000 Los Alamitos Futurity (G2).

The race at 1 1/16 miles for 2-year-olds – won last year by Practical Move – will be run for the 10th time at Los Alamitos on Saturday, Dec. 16, the next-to-last day of the upcoming Winter Thoroughbred meet.

Owned by Zedan Racing Stables Inc., Muth, a son of Good Magic, won the American Pharoah (G1) prior to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and hasn't been worse than second in four career starts.

Other Futurity nominees for Baffert, who won the race seven consecutive times at Los Alamitos between 2014-2020, include Prince of Monaco, a Los Alamitos graduate and winner of the Del Mar Futurity (G1), Mirahmadi, second in the Del Mar Futurity, and impressive maiden winners Coach Prime and Wynstock.

The Winter meet will also feature the $200,000-guaranteed Starlet (G2) for 2-year-old fillies. Run at the same distance as the Futurity, the Starlet, which last year was captured by Faiza, will be offered for the 10th time at Los Alamitos Saturday, Dec. 9.

Among the nominees are Dua, a Baffert-trained daughter of Arrogate who was third in both the Sorrento (G3)  and Chandelier (G2), recent Santa Anita maiden winner Don't Bring Crazy, and first out graduates Iscreamuscream, Pinecone, and Tap Your Dream.

The six-day Winter Thoroughbred meet will begin Friday, Dec. 8 and continue through Sunday, Dec. 17.
