The $700,000 OBS March breezer broke like a shot and was pressed to his inside through an opening quarter of :22.89. He began to shake free rounding the far turn, kicked for home as the one to catch, and, despite hanging on his left lead down the stretch, handled his Bob Baffert-trained stablemate and $1.05-million KEESEP graduate Imagination (Into Mischief) by 2 1/4 lengths. ‘What’s Not To Like About Del Mar’: D’Amato Eyes Fifth Straight Trainers Title At Seaside Track

Phil D'Amato has won the last four training titles at Del Mar, beginning with the Fall Meet in 2021. He followed up with another title run in the summer of 2022, though he had to share the crown with Bob Baffert. D'Amato then took the trainers race in the fall of 2022 and the just-concluded summer meet.

D'Amato's success is not limited to Del Mar. He won both training titles at Santa Anita this winter and spring before losing to Mark Glatt by one race in the autumn trainers race.

Judging by the show of force D'Amato brought down with him to Del Mar, it would be no surprise if he extends his winning streak this fall.

“What's not to like about Del Mar,” D'Amato said. “It's a quasi-working vacation and everyone enjoys it, including the horses.”

D'Amato brought 60 horses with him, including last year's Seabiscuit (G2) winner, to defend his crown.

“Hong Kong Harry in the Seabiscuit,” D'Amato said. “I have a new horse, Easter, who won a stakes race at Santa Anita for Graham Motion. They left the horse with me and he'll also go in the Seabiscuit. And possibly Balnikhov, too.”

Balnikhov was the 2022 Oceanside Stakes winner and runner-up to stablemate Gold Phoenix in last summer's Eddie Read (G2) at the seaside oval. He owns a pair of graded wins: the 2022 Bryan Station (G3) at Keeneland and this spring's San Francisco Mile (G3) at Golden Gate Fields.

As for his Breeders' Cup horses, D'Amato says they're getting some well deserved time off.

“I have Desert Dawn down here but she's just on a working vacation. There's no race for her here unless I want to try her on grass. Most of them I have given breaks, so it's a lot of new recruits down here.”

D'Amato had six horses in the Breeders' Cup: Tony Ann, Motorious and Beer Can Man in the Turf Sprint (G1); Gold Phoenix in the Turf (G1), and Masteroffoxhounds in the Mile (G1). Desert Dawn ran in the Distaff (G1).

Despite all the success and accolades, Phil D'Amato remains well centered with an eye on improving.

“I think with any good horseman we're learning every day,” D'Amato said. “Just knowing your horse, knowing what they like to do. It's always an evolving process. And this game evolves as well so you have to be in touch and in tune with the racing nuances, the ebbs and flows of horseracing, as well as training horses. But I think with hard work and determination, good horses and really good help, all of those things lead you in the right direction.”

‘I Had The Filly To Get There’: Comebacking Implicated Takes Pebbles In Graded Stakes Debut

Implicated enjoyed a perfect ground-saving trip from the inside post under Manny Franco en route to a smart half-length score in Saturday's $200,000 Pebbles (G3), a one-mile inner turf test for sophomores fillies at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The gray Connect filly, owned by Bradley Thoroughbreds, Belmar Racing and Breeding, Cambron Equine and Laura Leigh Stable, was one of three Chad Brown trainees along with 8-5 mutuel favorite Rhiannon, who finished a wide fifth, and 7-2 third choice Startup Mentality, who closed to complete the trifecta.

Franco, who secured his 2,000th career win last month en route to capturing the recently concluded Belmont at the Big A fall meet title, said he felt comfortable throughout tracking the pacesetting Precious Avary.

“I was able to break sharp and my filly put me in a great position in the turn,” Franco said. “After that, I saw the horse on the lead so my only chance was to get through to the inside and I was glad I had the horse to make the move. She was there for me. I knew the horses from behind would close but, at the same time, it was a flat mile and I knew I had the filly to get there.”

Precious Avary, at odds of 53-1 under Silvestre Gonzalez, set fractions of :23.91 and :48.69 over the firm footing with Silver Skillet stalking from second position under Joel Rosario and Implicated hugging the rail in fourth to the inside of Rhiannon.

Implicated maintained her position through the final turn and was full of run after cutting the corner to take command at the stretch call. She stayed on strong to the wire to stave off the late run of Sacred Wish and stop the clock in a final time of 1:35.82.

It was a neck back to third-place Startup Mentality, who closed from deep to nose out Silver Skillet with Rhiannon, On the Shortlist, Plentitude, Precious Avary and Stephanie's Charm rounding out the order of finish. Main-track only entrant Just Katherine was scratched. Precious Avary, who was reported to have bled, was pulled up in the gallop out and vanned off.

Implicated completed a three-race juvenile campaign last October at Aqueduct with a win in the 1 1/16-mile Chelsey Flower. She returned last month off nearly a one-year layoff to finish an even fourth under Jose Ortiz in a nine-furlong optional-claiming tilt against elders.

“I don't know what happened last time. Maybe she needed the race, but generally my horses don't first time off a layoff,” Brown said. “The only thing I was thinking about when I spoke to Manny in the paddock was maybe she didn't like seeing daylight the whole way.

“Jose gave her a great ride last time in the two path clear and out of trouble. It looked comfortable, but maybe it's just not what the horse wanted to do,” Brown continued. “I think it's a combination of her needing the race and getting her back covered up. Last year when she ran covered up, she was better. I told Manny in the paddock, 'You drew a nice, cozy post here. If you can get a pocket trip, let's test her out.' I thought I had her ready last time but sure enough, a covered trip worked for her and Manny did a great job.”

The George Weaver-trained Sacred Wish was a close second in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) in July over the Saratoga Race Course dirt before winning her turf debut in the Winter Memories here in September. She arrived from a deep-closing fourth in the Valley View (G3) on October 27 at Keeneland.

Javier Castellano said he got the trip he wanted aboard Sacred Wish, closing from sixth to ensure a dramatic finish.

“I wanted to be in a good stalking position off the pace a little bit on the outside and let her run. That's what I did, but I just got beat,” Castellano said. “The winner got a dream trip along the inside and she got the jump on us.

“I think going 1 1/16 miles, maybe she would have got it done,” he added. “But I like the way she finished and I like the way she ran in the end, we just got beat.”

Bred in Kentucky by Somewhere Stables, Implicated banked $110,000 in victory while improving her record to 5-3-0-1. She returned $23.60 for a $2 win bet. The $125,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale purchase from the Brookdale Sales consignment is out of the Tale of the Cat mare Wysteria, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Kallio.

Implicated ‘Connect’-s In the Pebbles

Chad Brown had three chances to record a sixth victory in the last eight runnings of the GIII Pebbles S., and it was the 10-1 longest priced of the trio Implicated (Connect) who parlayed a perfect trip into a first black-type success Saturday at the Big A.

Drawn the fence with Manny Franco at the controls for the first time, the $125,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling purchase was away without incident and raced a touch keen into the first turn as 53-1 Precious Avary (Divining Rod) showed the way at a moderate pace. Saving every inch of ground down the back, Franco went for Implicated midway on the turn and rode for some luck as Precious Avary was still going well enough up front. But the pacesetter rolled away from the fence in upper stretch, giving Implicated the room she required and she punched through before holding Sacred Wish (Not This Time) at bay. Startup Mentality (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) was second-last to make the stretch and might have caught Sacred Wish for second but for having to steady when off that one's heels a sixteenth of a mile from home.

A distant third on main-track debut at Saratoga last August, Implicated won her maiden in her grass debut and closed the season with a victory in this track's Chelsey Flower S. Oct. 28. Away nearly a year thereafter, the gray ran out of fitness late when fourth in a nine-furlong allowance Oct. 19.

“Last year when she ran covered up, she was better,” said Brown. “I told Manny in the paddock, 'You drew a nice, cozy post here. If you can get a pocket trip, let's test her out.' I thought I had her ready last time but sure enough, a covered trip worked for her and Manny did a great job.”

Pedigree Notes:

Implicated is the third graded winner for Connect, who has now been represented by graded scorers on dirt (Rattle N Roll), synthetic (Witwatersrand) and now the grass.

Somewhere Stable Kentucky paid $200,000 at the 2017 Keeneland September sale for Wysteria, a half-sister to Kallio (Scat Daddy), a Grade III winner on turf, SW Clear the Runway (Broken Vow) and MSP Sallisaw (Exchange Rate). The mare is represented by a yearling The Factor colt that sold for $155,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale, and her weanling colt by Knicks Go was bought back for $75,000 Friday at KEENOV. Wysteria was most recently bred to Golden Pal.
