Ryan Moore Named Longines World’s Best Jockey For Fourth Time
Ryan Moore easily took the 2023 Longines World's Best Jockey title, notching his fourth overall victory in the competition. The European-based rider was the inaugural recipient of the Longines World's Best Jockey Award, which was established in 2014, and he also won in 2016 and 2021. With his win this year, Moore ties Frankie Dettori for the most victories.
To claim the title, Moore won eight of the world's Top 100 Group or Grade 1 races, with his qualifying victories coming in the Longines Hong Kong Sprint (Wellington), Tattersalls Gold Cup (Luxembourg), Betfred Derby (Auguste Rodin), St James's Palace Stakes (Paddington), Coral-Eclipse (Paddington), Qatar Sussex Stakes (Paddington), Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes (Auguste Rodin), and Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (Auguste Rodin).
Moore won this year's award by a comfortable margin of 36 points. The scoring process rewards jockeys for finishing in the top three, giving Moore a total of 156 points on the year. Dettori was second with 120 points, while James McDonald, who won the competition in 2022, was third with 116 points.
The awarding of the Longines World's Best Jockey title is based upon performances in the 100 highest-rated Group 1 and Grade 1 races as established for the year by the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings Committee. The scoring incorporates races from 1 December of the previous year until 30 November of the current year. Jockeys accrue 12 points for a win, 6 points for placing second, and 4 points for placing third.
A ceremony will be held during the gala dinner of the Longines Hong Kong International Races on 8 December 2023 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre to honour Moore. The full and final standings for the 2023 Longines World's Best Jockey competition can be found at www.ifhaonline.org.
The Longines World's Best Jockey Award was established 10 years ago by Swiss watch brand Longines and the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) as a way to quantitatively recognize a jockey as the best among his or her global peers. Dettori's victories came in 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2020, while Hugh Bowman won the award in 2017.

World’s Top-Rated Racehorse Equinox Retired To Japan’s Shadai Stallion Station
Equinox, rated the LONGINES World's Best Racehorse, has been retired to Japan's Shadai Stallion Station for the 2024 season, reports racingpost.com. The 4-year-old son of Kitasan Black is the first Japanese horse to exceed 2-billion yen in earnings (JPY 2,215,446,100, or US$14.9 million).
On Sunday, Equinox put in an impressive performance to win the Group 1 Japan Cup, his sixth top-level win in a row. Earlier this year in his first start outside his native Japan, Equinox won the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic over Westover, Zagrey, and Mostahdaf.
Trained by Tetsuya Kimura, Equinox was ridden throughout his career by jockey Christophe Lemaire.
Following his win in the Japan Cup, Lemaire said: “Many emotions came to my mind because it was an unbelievable race. Horseracing fans and lovers were able to see something very special. He is a top horse and can adapt to any kind of race or surface. When we came back in front of the huge happy crowd who witnessed the race, I became very emotional. As a professional jockey for many years, I work hard to ride to perfection, so today was very special. Equinox is easy to ride—he knows his job very well and he doesn't use too much energy—so riding a horse like him is a pleasure and I felt very privileged to be in the saddle of such a fantastic horse.”
No stud fee has yet been announced.
