EFTBA Calls for Emergency Import Licence for ARVAC at Autumn Meeting

The European Federation of Thoroughbred Breeders' Association held its series of Autumn Meetings at the John Lambton Rooms, National Horse Racing Museum in Newmarket Nov. 23. A number of matters were discussed at the Autumn Meeting, including the need for an emergency import license for the Equine Viral Arteritis vaccine, known as ARVAC to be granted for Europe's breeding nations. Agreeing to show its support for applications by our country members, the objective is to ensure ARVAC is made available for the start of the 2024 thoroughbred breeding season. EFTBA is calling for the licence to be granted for 2024, with a review later in the year to establish whether the current manufacturing failure will result in the permanent loss of the Artervac vaccine.

“We are doing this on behalf of our European industry which represents 23,000 Thoroughbred breeders in Europe and creates direct and indirect employment for 150,000 people and represents 2.4% of all agricultural output in its multi-billion- euro value to the EU economies,” said EFTBA Chairman Joe Hernon. “This industry has been placed in a situation of significantly increased risk of an EVA incursion, which would have catastrophic consequences, as a result of the manufacturing failure of the hitherto widely used vaccine – Artervac. The granting of an emergency import licence, to

enable ARVAC to be available for the start of the 2024 thoroughbred breeding season, would protect us from this damaging vulnerability.”

Among other matters discussed:

  • EFTBA Country Reports: Regarding the annual collating and presenting of country reports, which gives a statistical insight into status of the European thoroughbred breeding industry, a digital survey would be launched early in 2024. The survey will cover all key areas and be presented at the EFTBA 2024 AGM.
  • EFTBA Promotional Videos Series: Following the production of the inaugural EFTBA promotional video, positive feedback has been received from all quarters. As a result, the EFTBA will produce series of videos for next year and beyond, with each one highlighting key areas of Europe's thoroughbred breeding industry.
  • Plans are also being put in place to update the current EFTBA website to make it more visually appealing, easier to navigate and ultimately a comprehensive information hub for breeders.
  • The TBA successfully launched its Carbon Calculator Tool Project. Plans are being put in place for other European counties to follow suit.
  • An agreement for the extended cooperation between EFTBA and EHN (European Horse Network) on mutually matters of interest to benefit breeders.
  • EFTBA 2024 AGM: The French TBA has offered to host the 2024 AGM of EFTBA next year in Paris during the month of June.

IEVA Conference Hosts 2023 Veterinary Conference

The three-day 2023 IEVA Conference kicked off Nov. 23 at the Cavan Equestrian Centre in Co Cavan, Ireland. The opening day's workshop dealt with the imaging of the equine head, featuring the latest in equine diagnostic imaging equipment displayed by Molloy Veterinary and Celtic SMR. The day rounded out with a quiz and supper at the Slieve Russell Hotel, home to IEVA23.

The next two days, the IEVA Conference–staged at the IEVA Exhibition Hall–delivered a series of lectures, talks and presentations by experts in the field of equine veterinary as well as a number of case studies and abstract studies. A series of hands-on workshops took place over the two days also.

Milda Baltrimaire from Tullyraine Equine Clinic was honored with the IMV Imaging sponsored Case Awards. Baltrimaire earned the award for her study into Absorbable urethral stent placement in the standing horse for the successful treatment of a urethral stricture.

Additionally, the inaugural Future Proof campaign saw many industry stakeholders sponsor a veterinary student to attend IEVA Conference 2023. A total of 17 Irish students, some of who are studying abroad, were able to attend the conference. Plans are to extend the campaign for IEVA24.

Another highlight of this year's event was the Gala Dinner, hosted by Brendan McArdle of The Irish Field. The Gala also featured an auction, benefitting the Veterinary Support Fund and the Elephant In the Room's beneficiary charity; namely Samaritan's Ireland for 2023.

“The weekend highlights were excellent speakers, a truly glamorous Gala Ball and a whopping €6000 raised for charity,” said newly elected President Sabrina Barnwell, of Dooneen Equine Veterinary Clinic. “We discussed heads, behaviour and the latest updates in the papers.”

“This year IEVA23 has continued the Case Award prize with a significant purse for recent graduates and introduced the FutureProof Students Scheme which was generously supported by our industry and saw 17 students supported to attend the event.  We are already planning another action-packed conference for 2024.”

Barry And Joni Butzow Named 2023 Recipients Of John Deere Award Recognizing Breeders

Barry and Joni Butzow, owners and breeders of graded stakes winner Zozos, have been named the 2023 recipients of the John Deere Award, in recognition of the breeders who participated this year in the Breeders' Cup World Championships and the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In.

The John Deere Award, presented by Breeders' Cup Limited and NTRA Advantage, emphasizes the contributions of breeders to the Breeders' Cup program. The industry's breeders and nominators provide funding for the purses of the World Championships through the annual nominations of foals and stallions.

NTRA Advantage and John Deere will award the Butzow's a John Deere Gator™ TX Utility Vehicle.

This year's John Deere Award winner was determined by a drawing of all breeders who won either a Breeders' Cup World Championships race or a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.

Zozos, a dark bay 4-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Munnings out of Papa's Forest by Forestry, won the $400,000 Ack Ack Stakes (G3) Sept. 30 at Churchill Downs, going gate-to-wire for a 1-length score in the 1-mile race. Trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Florent Geroux, the victory earned Zozos an automatic berth into the $1 million Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In. Zozos finished fifth in the Nov. 4 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita Park.

“Congratulations to Barry and Joni Butzow as the recipients of this year's John Deere Award, highlighted by the Win and You're In victory of Zozos in the Ack Ack Stakes,” said Dora Delgado, Breeders' Cup Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer. “The John Deere Award shines a light on the vital contributions breeders have made to the Breeders' Cup program since its inception and honors their accomplishments. We also thank John Deere and NTRA Advantage for their sponsorship of this award.”

“Zozos has given us a wonderful trip for the last two years, culminating with the Breeders' Cup this year,” said Barry Butzow. “It's a journey we couldn't have made without great people helping us along the way. Starting with the folks at Woodline Farm, Mike and JB Orem, Beau Lane, and the patient and great care of Brad Cox and staff, and of course the riding skills of Florent Geroux!

“Winning the Ack Ack proves what a great team Zozos had to work with, and now winning this award from John Deere puts the finishing touches on what has been a great ride for two years! John Deere has been and continues to be a strong proponent of the racing industry and Joni and I are extremely thankful for this award and your support.”

“Congratulations to Barry and Joni Butzow and all the breeders represented at this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park and Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In races held earlier this year,” said Auston Till, Manager Partner Sales, John Deere Ag & Turf. “John Deere is proud to recognize those breeders who excelled at the highest levels of competition throughout 2023.”
