War Horse Place Relaunches With GI Preakness Winner Rombauer

War Horse Place has secured the opportunity to stand GI Preakness S. hero Rombauer (Twirling Candy) for $6,000 LFSN, the breeding operation said in a release Wednesday.

Bred and campaigned by John and Diane Fradkin, Rombauer placed as a juvenile in the GI American Pharoah S. at Santa Anita before finishing third along the Derby Trail in the GII Toyota Blue Grass S. He then won the second leg of the Triple Crown at Old Hilltop before finishing third in the GI Belmont S.

Joining him will be French group stakes winner as a 2-year-old, MGSW Sacred Life (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who retired with 27 career starts. During that time, he was on the board in 19, including a pair of graded stakes wins. He will stand for $2,000 LFSN with concessions to black-type mares.

GISW Smooth like Strait (Midnight Lute) will also join the stallion roster. He retired with five graded stakes wins and an additional 10 graded placed finishes. His career earnings total $1,813,863 and he will stand for $3,500 LFSN.

Preakness Winner Rombauer To Enter Stud At War Horse Place, Open House November 11-12

Breeders have three exciting opportunities to access top talent at War Horse Place. The farm has secured the opportunity to stand Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer, graded stakes-winning millionaire Sacred Life (FR) and Grade 1-winning millionaire Smooth Like Strait.

By leading sire Twirling Candy from a deep female family, classic-winning Rombauer was impressive at both two and three. A Grade 1- placed juvenile he opened his sophomore season winning listed El Camino Real Derby before heading east to take the Preakness Stakes, and place third in the Belmont Stakes and Grade 2 Toyota Blue Grass. Rombauer will stand for $6,000 LFSN.

An undefeated graded stakes winner in France at two, Sacred Life (FR) headed stateside to the barn of Chad Brown during his 4-year-old campaign and remained consistently competitive at the highest levels, winning his final graded stakes as a 7-year-old. Retiring with 27 career starts, in which he was on the board in 19, including three graded stakes wins this is the only son of leading sire Siyouni standing in the U.S. Sacred Life (FR) will stand for $2,000 LFSN with concessions to black-type mares.

The 6-year-old son of champion sprinter Midnight Lute Smooth Like Strait retires with a 7-9-3 record from 26 career starts that included five graded stakes wins and an additional 10 graded-placed finishes. He won from 5 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles, with his best performance a 1 1/2-length win in the 2021 G1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes at Santa Anita Park. His career earnings total $1,813,863. Smooth Like Strait will stand for $3,500 LFSN.

An open house will be held at War Horse Place to view the stallions this weekend, Nov. 11-12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Del Mar Ready For Bing Crosby Season Friday

Entries were drawn Tuesday for the eight-race Friday card that kicks off the 13-day Bing Crosby Season at Del Mar, the track said in a release Wednesday afternoon.

This year's stakes schedule is very similar to last year. Out of 15, nine are graded. Over $2 million in purse money will be up for grabs over the course of the four-week meet, including the GI Hollywood Derby on Saturday, Dec. 2 and the GI Matriarch S. on Sunday, Dec. 3.

“Where we're laid out on the calendar is perfect,” Del Mar racing secretary David Jerkens said. “Mark Casse is sending a small string. Graham Motion. Wesley Ward has a few horses here. Obviously, the Breeders' Cup has just wrapped up but based on past history we've received quite a bit of an influx from the Chad Brown and Christophe Clement barns back east.”

Sandy Lane Winner El Caballo To Stand At Culworth Grounds

Group 2 winner El Caballo (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) will stand at Culworth Grounds Farm in 2024, the stud announced on Wednesday. The four-year-old will stand at £6,000 in his first season.

This is a first stallion for Culworth Grounds, which is owned by Sophie Buckley, a familiar face on the sales circuit as a consignor and pinhooker. She said, “We are delighted to have secured El Caballo. He was a precocious, tough and consistent racehorse. Bred by Whitsbury Manor Stud he has an excellent pedigree and is rated only one pound lower than their super sire Havana Grey (GB). El Caballo is an exciting prospect offering breeders access to a fast, current and successful family at exceptional value.”

A £30,000 Goffs UK Premier yearling, bought by his trainer Karl Burke, El Caballo is a half-brother to four winners including the Italian Listed winner Avengers Queen (GB) (Brazen Beau {Aus}). His dam was a four-time winner and also a half-sister to G2 Mill Reef S. winner Temple Meads (GB) (Avonbridge {GB}).
