Wathnan Racing Flexes Buying Power By Snapping Up Dark Trooper For 500k

In a little over a year, Wathnan Racing has carved out a reputation for being an emerging ownership force, and the early signs are that the operation is here for the foreseeable future after continuing its recruitment drive by spending 500,000gns on talented sprinter Dark Trooper (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-In-Training Sale on Wednesday.

That purchase through Blandford Bloodstock's ace agent Richard Brown came after the team spent 750,000gns on He's A Monster (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Just Bring It (Ire) (Harry Angel {Ire}) from Alex Elliott's Imperium Sales draft on Tuesday.

The modus operandi has been simple; source quality horses, and in Dark Trooper, Wathnan Racing have secured a talented sprinter whose best days could be ahead of him still. Trained by Ed Walker, Dar Trooper has won six times and reached a rating of 104. He was last seen finishing sixth, beaten just two lengths, in a Group 3 at Ascot.

“The idea is to buy quality over quantity, that is the message from Olly Tait to me and Ali Al Kubaisi, who is working the sale with me,” Brown said. “This horse has been on the radar for most of the year because Al Donald, who bought him and managed him, and Ed Walker, who trained him, have been trying to get me to buy him most of the year saying there is a lot more to come.”

Brown added, “He won a very competitive Ascot handicap on quick ground and then was unlucky in the Bengough. He is an interesting horse and will go to Qatar. There is a programme for him in that part of the world, but he is the sort of horse who could come back here. He is a gelding so can run on for a number of seasons. He will be trained by Alban de Mieulle and we'll see how things go.”

There was a good feeling at Park Paddocks throughout Wednesday and that extended to the figures. The average climbed 5% to 48,248gns while the median fell 2% to 23,500gns. However, the aggregate was down 12% to 11,869,000gns and the clearance rate fell 3% to 89%.

Saudi Buyers Go Head-To-Head For Classy Sea The Casper

Two heavy hitters from Saudi Arabia went head-to-head for the 105-rated Sea The Casper (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) with Mubarak Al-Ruwis seeing off Najd Stud at 425,000gns.

Sea The Casper will be aimed at the Saudi Cup Carnival, according to the owner Al-Ruwis, who has a small but select string in the Gulf.

The owner said, “He will ship straight to Saudi. We have two horses already in Saudi. We need a quality horse for the big Saudi Cup meeting. We think this horse could be a champion.”

Predictably, the Saudi investment at Tattersalls this week has been strong and Najd Stud struck earlier in the evening for Group 2 winner Jack Darcy (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}).

Trained by Paul and Oliver Cole to land the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville in August, Jack Darcy was one of the wildcards added to the sale and was drafted by Barton Sales.

Oliver Cole said, “I think he is a Group 1 horse in the making. I would have preferred to keep him in training with us but owners have to do what they want to do.”

“We wanted to run in the Prix Dollar and he ran very well, arguably his best race, and we wildcarded him here.”

Najd Stud also went to 170,000gns to secure Bresson (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) from Juddmonte and paid 155,000gns for Godolphin's Parchemin (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) earlier in the session. The leading Saudi buyers have added 12 horses to their haul this week to the tune of 1,483,000gns.

Royal Patronage Off To Oz

He has advertised his abilities in Britain and America but now Australia beckons for the 110-rated Royal Patronage (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) after Johnny McKeever signed for the four-year-old on behalf of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

It was McKeever who lit up Park Paddocks on Tuesday evening when going to 575,000gns for Balance Play (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) out of Alex Elliott's Imperium Sales draft.

Royal Patronage came highly recommended by his trainer Graham Motion, according to McKeever, whose total spend has now reached 1,280,000gns for the week.

He said, “We spoke to Graham Motion about the horse and he gave us a very positive report.. The horse had a few small training issues, nothing to worry about at all.

“He is an ideal horse to go to Australia so we were confident that this is the right thing to do. It is hard to find Group form in the sale and he has got a certain quality. We are not guessing here, we know he is a pretty good horse if all goes well for him.”

Royal Patronage has not raced since June. Prior to that, he landed an allowance race at Keeneland for the Motion team. But he is perhaps best known for showing high-class form for Mark and Charlie Johnston in Britain–for whom he landed the G2 Royal Lodge S.–before he was shipped to America.

Juddmonte Draft Adds Intrigue

A Juddmonte draft always generates plenty of attention regardless of the sale and it was no different on Wednesday with 13 horses selling for a combined 1,368,000gns.

The draft was headed by Halfway Line (GB) (Zoffany {Ire}), a three-time winner and listed-placed for Francis-Henri Graffard, who was knocked down to BBA Ireland online for 320,000gns.

BBA Ireland's Mick Donohoe revealed afterwards to the Tattersalls blog that the horse had been bought alongside Niall Dalton of Stakes Horses and will continue his career with trainer Phil D'Amato in America.

Donohoe said via telephone, “I have left the sale ground and so it worked well for me to bid online. The horse has been bought in conjunction with Niall Dalton of Stakes Horses to go to California and is for a new client with trainer Phil D'Amato, who has had a good bit of success training European horses.”

He added, “Halfway Line was recommended by Francois-Henri Graffard as well as Barry Mahon of Juddmonte. He should suit California-he is progressive, he goes on firm, he has a turn of foot, all the attributes you need.”

Juddmonte's Ziryab (GB) (Kingman {GB}), a winner for John and Thady Gosden, was another major attraction in the draft. The three-year-old was sold to Peter Trainor and Ciaron Maher for 240,000gns.

Trainor said, “He goes to Ciaron Maher. Last year we bought Future History here from Juddmonte and this is the same type of horse with the same profile. Hopefully he will follow the same path and be a fun horse.”

He added, “Ziryab is well-bred and we were quite taken with his last run. He is lightly-raced and there is loads of upside with him.”

Smart Juvenile Hurdle Prospect Joins Jackdaws Castle

Just 10 days after Mt Fugi Park (Ire) (Walk In The Park {Ire}) provided syndicate Tanzanite with its first winner from as many attempts when scoring on debut for Jonjo O'Neill at Ffos Las, the owners returned to the market to snap up smart juvenile hurdle prospect Circuit Breaker (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}).

Not only can Nathaniel get you a top-class horse on the level, as we saw with the brilliant Desert Crown and Enable, but the King George and Eclipse winner has proved he can get classy jumpers as well.

The team at Jackdaws Castle will be hoping they have found the next Zanahiyr (Ire) after agent Matt Coleman signed for the Ralph Beckett-trained Circuit Breaker for 260,000gns on behalf of Tanzanite..

Coleman said, “He is going to Jackdaws and we had an order to look for a juvenile hurdle horse. This is a big fantastic-looking horse by Nathaniel. He looks like a National Hunt horse. Ralph [Beckett] was very complimentary about the horse and is extremely pleased with how well he has done on the Flat considering his size. He won on debut and ran second to Urban Outlook (GB) (Cityscape {GB}) [who made 280,000gns to Domeland] last time.”

The Tanzanite team can count themselves lucky to have come away with Circuit Breaker as, just when the hammer was about to fall, Harold Kirk tried to throw in one last bid. Alas, it was too late and the principal buyer for Ireland's champion National Hunt trainer Willie Mullins was forced to fill the role of the underbidder.

Mt Fugi Park was sourced by Coleman at the Tattersalls Cheltenham February Sale for £290,000 after he won his point-to-point for trainer Donnchadh Doyle.

Coleman continued, “We were really pleased with Mt Fugi Park. The syndicate has two horses and they are both real out-and-out National Hunt types. For instance, Mt Fugi Park is very much a staying chaser of the future, and that's why we wanted to get something here with possibly a bit more speed.”

That wasn't the only Beckett-trained gelding to be received well by the market as the previous lot, Campaign Trail (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), was sold to Ed Bailey Bloodstock and Peter Kerr Syndicates for 200,000gns. Both horses were consigned by Jamie Railton.

Buy of the day

Wednesday's buy of the day is something of a collaborative effort as the Racing Post's James Thomas made a strong case for Gaiden (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) to be given the nod.

Trained by Richard Hannon, Gaiden was well-fancied and sent off as the 3-1 favourite to win on debut over the minimum trip at Windsor back in April.

If connections had come away from that effort with any disappointment that would have soon dissipated with what the winner, Relief Rally (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), went on to achieve.

Sadly, Gaiden hasn't followed a similar trajectory. She followed up on that effort with a rock-solid third in a listed contest at York, bagging valuable black-type in the process, but has been well-beaten in her three subsequent starts.

Gaiden was knocked down to the Gaiden Partners for 32,000gns on Wednesday and she may well represent a bit of value. Even if she were never to set foot on a racecourse again, she has achieved black-type without winning and is by one of the sexiest stallions in the game. She looks well-bought.

Away from Gaiden, Eastmore (GB) (Awtaad {Ire}) could look well-bought by Charles Byrnes at 80,000gns. Placed in all three of his maidens for legendary trainer Kevin Prendergast in Ireland, he has been snapped up by one of the shrewdest dual-purpose handlers in the business and looks an ideal type to go down that route.

Thought for the day

Is it just me or is this the first year in a while where the National Hunt trainers have been able to play on the higher-rated juvenile hurdle prospects?

In previous years, even the top operators were being blown out of the water by international buyers for the three-year-olds who stayed 10f and beyond.

This week, we've had Jonjo O'Neill buy the 89-rated Circuit Breaker for 260,000gns while Ed Bailey landed Campaign Trail for 200,000gns. At a lower end, we saw Charles Byrnes secure a nice horse for 80,000gns while Gordon Elliott has added five to his team over the past few days.

There has been a dearth of collective talent in the two-mile hurdling division in recent years and this week's results can only be a positive with a view towards providing the sphere with a much-needed shot in the arm.

There are few things as exciting as a Champion Hurdler at full cry. Think of that golden era of Hardy Eustace, Brave Inca, Harchibald and Mac's Joy.

We have been starved of such competition in recent years over hurdles but, who knows, the first signs of this avenue being reopened to the jumps handers were apparent at Tattersalls this week. Who knows, we could be writing about Circuit Breaker or Campaign Trail by the time Cheltenham rolls around.

Forty Niner: Everso Mischievous Tries Graded Company, Double Crown Back For Title Defense

Qatar Racing's stakes-winner Everso Mischievous will make his first start in graded company in Saturday's Grade 2, $300,000 Forty Niner, a one-mile test for 3-year-olds and up that was previously run as the Kelso, at Belmont at the Big A.

Trained by two-time Eclipse Award-winner Brad Cox, the sophomore son of Into Mischief was last seen winning the seven-furlong Harrods Creek on September 23 at Churchill Downs where he raced one length off the pace in second under Cristian Torres before taking command at the stretch call and drawing off to a 3 1/4-length victory in a final time of 1:22.15.

The win came in the bay's stakes debut after a narrow allowance score in August at Saratoga Race Course by a neck over Cape Trafalgar. He has never finished worse than second in five lifetime outings and was a winner at second asking on May 6 at Churchill by 2 1/4 lengths over subsequent stakes-winner Northern Invader.

Out of the graded stakes-winning Medaglia d'Oro mare Ever So Clever, Everso Mischievous initially sold for $600,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale before selling for $85,000 at the 2022 Keeneland November Horses of Racing Age Sale.

Torres retains the mount from post 2.

Built Wright Stables' graded stakes-winning Maryland-bred Double Crown [post 1, Jose Gomez] looks to defend his title in this event on the heels of a closing third-place effort in the Maryland Million Classic on October 14 at Laurel Park. Trained by Ray Ginter, Jr., the son of Bourbon Courage won the Polynesian against open company two starts back at Pimlico Race Course with a driving finish up the rail.

“He just got caught in the Maryland Million and he's probably in the best form he's been in,” said owner Lynn Cash of Built Wright Stables. “I think the lack of Lasix moves him forward compared to other horses. The Polynesian set up just right and the jock went up the rail.”

Double Crown scored in last year's running of this event, then named the Kelso, with a tidy off-the-pace move in the stretch to defeat Baby Yoda by 1 3/4 lengths just one week after finishing fourth in the Maryland Million. This time around, Double Crown will have two weeks of rest heading into the Forty Niner, something Cash said suits the 6-year-old bay well.

“It's two weeks' rest this year instead of seven days last year, and he doesn't run as well with a long rest, so this is really good,” said Cash. “It's enough rest to freshen him. He's a blue collar horse for sure. He just gets in there and gives you all he has.”

In addition to the Kelso and Polynesian, Double Crown boasts stakes victories in the Roar and Carry Back as a sophomore at Gulfstream Park and Grade 3 placings that season when third in the Smile Sprint at Gulfstream and second in the Chick Lang at Pimlico. He boasts field-best earnings of $753,685 through a record of 40-8-9-5.

Four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown sends out a strong pair in Klaravich Stables' dual graded stakes-placed Accretive [post 3, Irad Ortiz, Jr.] and Michael Caruso and Michael Dubb's multiple stakes-winning New York-bred Dr Ardito [post 5, Manny Franco].

Accretive enters from a game runner-up finish to top older dirt male Cody's Wish in the Grade 2 Vosburgh sprinting seven furlongs here on October 1. The 4-year-old Practical Joke gelding set the tempo under regular pilot Irad Ortiz, Jr. and kept on well into the stretch, but was outfinished late as his foe completed the course in 1:21.83.

As a sophomore, Accretive was a strong winner on debut at Belmont Park ahead of a narrow defeat to Gunite in the Grade 2 Amsterdam at Saratoga Race Course. He finished off-the-board in the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial to close out his campaign before returning almost a year later to win a pair of allowance events this summer at the Spa.

Dr Ardito will look to regroup after a distant sixth-place finish in the Parx Dirt Mile over a sloppy and sealed Parx main track on September 23. The gelded son of Liam's Map has posted two stakes triumphs this year at one mile against fellow state-breds, taking the Haynesfield in February at the Big A and the Evan Shipman in August at the Spa. Bred by Fred W. Hertrich, III and John D. Fielding, Dr Ardito has banked $379,850 in earnings through a consistent 11-7-1-0 record.

Ronald Stewart's Film Star [post 4, Jose Lezcano] arrives at the Forty Niner in impressive form as he makes his ninth outing for trainer Linda Rice after being haltered for $75,000 out of a win in April at Keeneland.

The Flatter bay was most recently second to Zandon in the nine-furlong Grade 2 Woodward on October 1 here with a stalking trip under Jose Ortiz. He held a slim lead at the top of the lane after tracking in second throughout the race, but could not fend off the oncoming Zandon and was defeated 4 1/4 lengths while holding place by a neck over Law Professor. That effort followed a pair of gate-to-wire scores traveling nine furlongs against winners.

“He came out very well,” said Rice. “It looks like there's a lot of speed signed up, maybe that will work to his advantage. He's had the lead going a mile and an eighth, but he won't going a mile.”

Never worse than second in each of his starts since being claimed, Film Star had also been entered in Saturday's nine-furlong Grade 2 Fayette at Keeneland, but will run in the Forty Niner according to Rice.

Completing the field are the pair of multiple graded stakes-placed Synthesis [post 8, Isaac Castillo] and five-time winner Business Model [post 7, Dylan Davis] for owner/trainer David Jacobson; and Liberty House Racing, Twenty-Two Stable, Club Sixty Five Racing, Take a Shot Stables and East Coast Partners' Swiftsure [post 6, Kendrick Carmouche], who enters off a pair of wins for trainer Horacio De Paz.

The Forty Niner, slated as Race 10, is one of three stakes on Saturday's lucrative 11-race program, including the Grade 2, $250,000 Mother Goose in Race 8, and the listed $135,000 Awad in Race 9. First post is 12:05 p.m. Eastern.

America's Day at the Races will present live coverage and analysis of every day of Belmont at the Big A on the networks of FOX Sports. For the broadcast schedule and channel finder, visit https://www.nyra.com/aqueduct/racing/tv-schedule.

Xigera Skips Breeders’ Cup In Favor Of Saturday’s Mother Goose At Aqueduct

Rigney Racing's Xigera will look to make the grade in Saturday's 66th running of the Grade 2, $250,000 Mother Goose, a nine-furlong route for sophomore fillies, at Belmont at the Big A.

Trained by Philip Bauer, the Nyquist dark bay has flashed talent on turf and dirt, taking the Tepin over the Ellis Park green in July and the Seneca Overnight last out on September 23 over the Churchill Downs main track.

With Julien Leparoux aboard in the Seneca Overnight, Xigera tracked the early foot of She's Lookin Lucky through splits of 48.07 seconds and 1:12.24 before making her bid near the quarter-pole and drawing off to a 6 1/4-length score in a final time of 1:41.92 to garner a career-best 98 Beyer Speed Figure.

“She's always been the right temperament kind of filly to be a real good racehorse,” Bauer said. “She has a sharp edge to her and it transfers over to her races. I tell people she has a short fuse – she's easy to deal with until that fuse is burnt. She's doing great and we're excited. She ships up this afternoon.”

Xigera posted a bullet breeze two works out from her Seneca score and has followed the same pattern into the Mother Goose, breezing a bullet five-eighths in 59.40 on October 13 ahead of an easy half-mile in 49 flat Sunday while preparing over the Churchill main track.

Bauer said the team flirted with shipping Xigera to Santa Anita Park for the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff before landing on the Mother Goose.

“We made sure the work two out was a good one and we were still trying to decide if we were going to fly out to California,” Bauer said. “We talked in circles about it and decided that maybe the best thing at the moment would be to get her a graded black type win, if we can.”

A maiden winner at second asking last August over the Saratoga Race Course turf, Xigera moved to the main track last October at Keeneland and was elevated to third in the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades. The winner of that event, Wonder Wheel, went on to win the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland to secure Champion 2-Year-Old Filly honors, while Xigera tried her luck in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf but landed last-of-14 after a troubled start.

Bauer entered Xigera in four straight turf starts from November through August, winning twice in Kentucky, before taking her back to dirt in the Seneca following an off-the-board effort over soft going in the Grade 3 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Oaks Invitational.

“If she wins the Mother Goose, maybe I'll be frustrated with myself for waiting as long as I did to try her back on the dirt, but she was a nice filly in her own right on the grass,” Bauer said. “When you win two grass races in a row and one of them in a stake as a 3-year-old, you'd almost call yourself crazy to try her on the dirt if she'd run bad.

“She's one of the favorites in the barn because she is one that takes her race anywhere and we're certainly excited to try,” added Bauer.

Xigera, out of the stakes-winning Black Tie Affair mare Argent Affair, is a half-sister to graded stakes-winner Forty Under, who won the 2018 Grade 3 Pilgrim over the Belmont Park turf.

Leparoux retains the mount from post 6.

Katsumi Yoshida's Defining Purpose [post 7, Junior Alvarado] earned Grade 1 glory in April at Keeneland with a 20-1 upset score in the Ashland when posting a prominent half-length score over Punchbowl, who was a neck better than returning rival Julia Shining.

Trained by Kenny McPeek, the Cross Traffic grey followed with a seventh-place finish in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks in May at Churchill Downs but redeemed herself off a two-month break by besting Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan-winner Taxed in the Grade 3 Indiana Oaks.

Defining Purpose, out of the multiple stakes-winning Strong Hope mare Defining Hope, was subsequently third, defeated five lengths by the victorious Randomized, in the Grade 1 Alabama presented by Keeneland Sales in August at the Spa and was last seen finishing a distant fifth in the Grade 1 Cotillion contested at 1 1/16-miles over a sloppy and sealed main track on September 23 at Parx. She has trained since at Belmont Park, posting a pair of sharp works over the dirt training track.

Alpha Delta Stables' Occult [post 5, Irad Ortiz, Jr.] exits a third-place finish in the Cotillion, rallying from last-of-9 to finish 1 3/4-lengths back of Ceiling Crusher, who successfully shipped in from the West Coast.

Trained by Chad Brown, the Into Mischief dark bay won the nine-furlong Busanda here in January over Gambling Girl, who went on complete the exacta in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks.

Occult closed to finish third in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 1 Acorn in June at Belmont, landing four lengths back of Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous and followed with a dominant score in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks over returning rival Foggy Night.

The $625,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, out of the graded stakes-winning Empire Maker mare Magical Feeling, is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Exulting and stakes winner Magical.

Brown will also saddle a pair of sophomore contenders for Klaravich Stables in dual graded stakes-placed Undervalued Asset [post 4, Manny Franco] and maiden winner Peak Popularity [post 2, Dylan Davis].

Undervalued Asset, a Speightstown bay, graduated on debut here in November and followed with a runner-up effort in the seven-furlong Grade 3 Forward Gal in February at Gulfstream Park. She defeated winners in July at Saratoga but was out finished next up when second in the Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks by Vahva, who exited that effort to win the Grade 2 Raven Run at Keeneland.

Undervalued Asset enters from a distant fifth-place finish on October 1 here in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom traveling 6 1/2-furlongs and will stretch out beyond one-mile for the first time.

Peak Popularity, a Mendelssohn chestnut, graduated at third asking in a 10-furlong maiden versus elders on April 29 at Churchill. The $435,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale purchase has since hit the board in a pair of routes, finishing third in a nine-furlong optional-claimer for sophomore fillies in June at Ellis Park and second in a 10-furlong off-the-turf allowance facing older company on August 25 at the Spa.

Pine Brook Farm's Foggy Night [post 1, Jose Lezcano], winner of the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks in July, will look to make amends from a distant sixth-place finish last out in the Grade 1 Cotillion.

Trainer Butch Reid, Jr. refused to blame the sloppy and sealed going for the atypical result from the consistent Khozan chestnut.

“It was a tough race. Those were the best 3-year-old fillies in the country and she acquitted herself well,” Reid, Jr. said. “She's a top filly and if things go right she can compete with the best of them.”

Foggy Night has posted four wins and five seconds from 11 starts, taking the Cathryn Sophia comfortably in August at Parx ahead of the Cotillion. She completed the exacta in the Tempted in November here and the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks in July when 10 1/4-lengths back of the returning Occult.

Reid, Jr. said Foggy Night will relish the added distance.

“The further the better with her,” Reid, Jr. said. “She's already shown that she ships well and handles all the things like that. She's won at various different racetracks. We're going in there feeling pretty good about it.”

Stonestreet Stables' regally-bred Julia Shining [post 3, Javier Castellano] made the grade at second asking here for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher, overcoming a bobbled start to post a neck score in the nine-furlong Grade 2 Demoiselle over sloppy and sealed footing.

Julia Shining followed with third-place efforts in the Suncoast in February at Tampa Bay Downs and the aforementioned Ashland in April at Keeneland. Last out, she was eased when ninth in the Grade 1 Alabama in August at the Spa where she has continued to work regularly over Oklahoma training track.

The Kentucky homebred, by Curlin and out of the Pletcher-trained Grade 1-winning A. P. Indy mare Dreaming of Julia, is a full-sister to Pletcher's dual Champion Malathaat.

The Mother Goose, slated as Race 8, is one of three stakes on Saturday's lucrative 11-race program, including the Grade 2, $300,000 Forty Niner in Race 10, and the listed $135,000 Awad in Race 9.

Here’s Frankie! Legendary Dettori Back At Santa Anita For Saturday’s Lure Stakes

International superstar jockey Frankie Dettori, who has announced he will forestall retirement and ride full-time this winter at Santa Anita, will be riding this weekend at The Great Race Place, one week in advance of the Breeders' Cup World Championships here on Nov. 3 and 4.

With nine 3-year-olds and up set to contest one mile on turf in Saturday's restricted $80,000 Lure Stakes, Dettori has taken the call on Graham Motion's French-bred Easter, who has been idle since Aug. 24 at Saratoga.

“Frankie reached out to me and said that he'd like to ride this weekend, so I'm putting him on a few horses,” said agent Ron Anderson. “We're of course looking forward to the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita and riding regularly out there this winter. Frankie is ready.”

Based in his native France prior to the spring of 2022, Easter, a 5-year-old gelding, has won two of his eight starts with Motion, all on grass, and has won four of his nine career tries at one mile on turf. Most recently second, beaten a neck in a classified allowance at a mile and one eighth August 24, he'll be making his Southern California debut on Saturday.

As his best performances have come when he's been allowed to settle well of the pace, Easter's connections would certainly well come fast early splits in the Lure.

Owned by Madaket Stables, LLC, Easter, who was Group II stakes-placed going a mile on turf in France at age three, is 16-4-3-3 overall with earnings of $273,790.

A one mile turf classified allowance winner two starts back on Aug. 19 at Del Mar, trainer Simon Callaghan's Astronomer nearly pulled off an 8-1 upset in the Grade II City of Hope Mile (turf) here on Sept. 30, leading throughout en route to finishing second by a neck behind highly accomplished graded stakes winner Hong Kong Harry.

A 4-year-old War Front gelding bred in Kentucky by Alice Bamford and owned by Alice Bamford and Michael Tabor, Astronomer earned a lofty 96 Beyer in the City of Hope and is three for five at one mile on turf. With Antonio Fresu riding for the third consecutive time, Astronomer should be well backed as he bids for his fourth win from eight overall starts.

With a sharp recent allowance win at one mile turf to his credit, the Jeff Mullins-conditioned Bally's Charm rates a big look and helps to ensure a solid early pace with Hector Berrios back aboard. A 4-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding by Roi Charmant, Bally's Charm was most impressive leading throughout in a second condition allowance here on Oct. 1, carving out splits of 22 flat, 45.60 and 1:09 flat en rout to final clocking of 1:32.60 which earned him a career-top Beyer Speed Figure of 94.

Owned by his breeders Red Baron's Barn, LLC and Vaya Con Suerte, Bally's Charm, who will be making his third start of the year, is three for five at one mile on turf and is 10-5-1-1 overall with earnings of $315,500.
