Omaha Beach Filly Beats Traffic Home in Keeneland Debut

6th-Keeneland, $100,000, Msw, 10-6, 2yo, f, 6f, 1:11.49, ft, 3 1/4 lengths.
BOURBON BREEZE (f, 2, Omaha Beach–Malibu Pride, by Malibu Moon) became her sire (by War Front)'s 14th winner in impressive fashion here, the 4-1 shot saving early ground from behind the leading bunch heading into the straight. Losing a few positions as the field closed ranks, she next had to contend with a wall of runners in front of her and finally found her seam in the final furlong as she muscled between rivals for an opening. Driving passed even-money favorite Tammy Lynn (Distorted Humor) as the sixteenth marker sailed by, Bourbon Breeze opened up a 3 1/4-length margin on the wire to score at first-asking. The most recent winner to the races for her dam, the victress has a 2023 half-sister by Liam's Map. Malibu Pride was bred to Cyberknife for 2024. This is the immediate female family of MSW By the Light (Malibu Moon), the dam of MGISW By the Moon, who was in turn responsible for GSP Full Moon Madness (Into Mischief). Hoist the Gold Rises to the Occasion in the WAYI Phoenix

Hoist the Gold (Mineshaft) punched his ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint with an overdue first graded stakes win in Friday's 'Win and You're In' GII Stoll Keenon Odgen Phoenix S. at Keeneland.

He finished third in the GI Runhappy Malibu S. at Santa Anita last December and second in this year's GI Churchill Downs S. on the Kentucky Derby undercard. He fell just a neck short in this spring's GIII Commonwealth S. in Lexington. Last seen finishing a well-beaten sixth in the GII Pat O'Brien S. Aug. 26 at Del Mar, the Dream Team One Racing homebred was installed as a 6-1 shot here.

Riding the rail, the hooded colt backed off along the backstretch as G1SW Sibelius (Not This Time) and MSW Doctor Oscar (Shackleford) battled for the lead. Fanned three wide around the far turn, the Dallas Stewart trainee took over past the eighth pole and held off his pursuers to take home his first graded stakes win by 3/4 of a length. Nakatomi (Firing Line) was second.

“When you show up with a nice horse and a jock [John Velazquez] that's won five Grade Ones for you, you got a lot of confidence,” Stewart said. “I didn't worry about a thing down the backside. It played out perfect. He got him out. The horse loves this track.”

Pedigree Notes:

Mineshaft, sire of 17 crops of racing age, now has 61 stakes winners and 24 graded stakes winners to his credit. Hoist the Gold is the second to race out of Tacit Approval, who is also responsible for a yearling filly named Anakarina (Vekoma). She foaled a colt by Mucho Macho Man this year. Second dam Punch Appeal (Successful Appeal) is a multiple stakes winner.

New York Race Track Chaplaincy Opens New Multi-Purpose Facility At Belmont Park

With a wide variety of supporters including donors, Thoroughbred racing industry representatives, school, police and elected officials looking on, as well as members of the backstretch community, the New York Race Track Chaplaincy on Friday hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and opened the doors to its new Chaplaincy Center at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

The 3,500-foot multi-purpose building and chapel, designed by Frost Hurff Architects of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., is located just inside the Gate 6 Hempstead Avenue entrance to Belmont Park.

“The creation and the opening of this facility is something we have worked for and dreamt about for many years and it is absolutely thrilling to see it become a reality,” said Ramón Dominguez, president of the Board of the New York Racetrack Chaplaincy. “It will serve the wide-ranging needs of countless individuals from the backstretch community.”

One individual who will appreciate the new building is Lucy Luna, a member of the backstretch community who not only benefits from the programs of the Chaplaincy but volunteers extensively so that others may benefit as well, “We are all so excited to be able to call this new building home,” Luna said. “We can come here and relax, enjoy each other's company, and feel stronger to meet the next day.”

The chaplaincy ministers to the needs of the backstretch community at the NYRA racetracks (Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course) as well as surrounding farms through a wide variety of programs. They include enrichment programs for children, teen mentoring, women's enrichment, social service and recreational programs, as well as educational opportunities, and non-denominational religious services.

“Our collective joy at the opening of the Chaplaincy Center is matched only by our gratitude,” Dominguez added. “We will be forever grateful to the founding partners, and all of our donors and supporters who have made this possible.”

Besides the chapel, which will also function as a multi-purpose room, the building allows for office space for the chaplaincy staff, and a classroom, named after the late Cot Campbell, that will be used as a learning center.

Plans for the new building and initial financial commitments were first announced in 2018. The official groundbreaking took place in March 2022.

“As a horse owner, I deeply appreciate the dedication and skill of backstretch workers who make horse racing possible,” said Michael Dubb, who provided the building supplies for the project and also purchased the original two trailers which have housed the chaplaincy. “This project has been a work-in-progress for a long time and it is great to finally see it all come together.”

Major funding for the new building was provided by founding partners D.J. Stable, Dogwood Stable, Michael Dubb, John Hendrickson, Kristine and Christopher Kay, Seth A. and Beth S. Klarman, the New York Racing Association, the Estate of Dolores Ochota, OXO Equine, West Point Thoroughbreds, and WinStar Farm.

“We are glad to support the important work of the Chaplaincy in caring for the community of backstretch workers who give so much to the horses and the sport,” the Klarmans said. “It is exciting to see such an essential organization expand its footprint with the opening of the New York Chaplaincy Center and we're grateful to all who make this work possible.”

The Race Track Chaplaincy of America was organized in 1971 and the New York Race Track Chaplaincy was created in 1986. Norm Evans and Jim Watson served as chaplains before Humberto Chavez was named chaplain in September 2003.

Oceanic Searching For Better Trip In Sunday’s Nearctic

Oceanic, a multiple graded stakes-placed son of Constitution-Rockin Girl, tackles six furlongs of E.P. Taylor turf and 12 rivals in Sunday's $250,000 Nearctic Stakes (G2T) at Woodbine.

Trained by Jordan Blair for Surfside Stables, LLC, 6-year-old Oceanic has encountered his fair share of bad racing luck over a career that has yielded a 4-3-3 mark from 25 starts, to go along with $348,624 (U.S.) in earnings.

The bay's past three starts are prime examples of tough trips he's endured.

On May 23, at Indiana Downs, Oceanic stumbled at the three-eighths pole but recovered to finish fourth, 2 ¼ lengths behind the winner in the five-furlong turf race. One race later, on July 1, Oceanic stumbled at the start of the Highlander (G2T) at Woodbine but rallied to finish second, a half-length back of Lucky Score in the six-furlong trek over the E.P. Taylor turf.

Last time out, on August 6, the gelding was bumped early in the 5 ½-furlong KY Downs Preview Turf Sprint Stakes at Ellis Park, before regrouping to finish fourth.

“He's had a lot of issues and other things over the years,” said Blair. “But he's a trier and he always gives you everything he's got.”

Blair sees the E.P. Taylor course as an ideal fit for Oceanic.

“We've freshened him for this one and he seems to always run well off a freshening. We had to decide whether to run at Ellis Park, Kentucky Downs, or at Keeneland or Woodbine. One thing we noticed about Canada, is that he flourished on that turf course, and the extra half-furlong really fits his running style right now. It could make all the difference in the world. With such a big course up there, at least in our last race, the horses really spread out and gave us a lot of running room.”

“And the turf course is beautiful. I had come up to Toronto many years ago when I was an assistant with Kenny McPeek and we won the Summer Stakes (in 2009) with a horse named Bridgetown. I've been up there several times and experienced it and it's a lovely course. It has big, sweeping turns and it gives the horses room to run. With more than a quarter mile turning for home, it gives you a real true sense of your horse, rather than having those troubled trips like Oceanic has dealt with. He stumbled in the Highlander, but he had plenty of time to make that big run.”

Bred in Kentucky by DP Racing LLC, Oceanic debuted with a second-place effort on April 1, 2020, in a six-furlong dirt race at Tampa Bay Downs. He broke his maiden in his seventh start, a 4 ½-length score at five panels over the Tampa Bay turf on January 17, 2021.

His lone stakes victory came in last year's Woodford Reserve Da Hoss Stakes. He was second in the Woodford Reserve (G2T) next time out and then contested the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T), finishing thirteenth to Caravel.

“It almost feels like he should be a Grade 1 winner by now,” said Blair. “He's as talented as any of the turf sprinters out there, but without getting the breaks. Hopefully, he can get away well, and if he's able to settle mid-pack, then watch out. If he can get the trip, I think he's sitting on a pretty big race.”

Oceanic will face some heavy hitters in the Nearctic, a group that features multiple graded stakes winner Lucky Score, who is 2-2-4 in his last eight starts. Other hopefuls include graded stakes winner Big Invasion, 2023 Connaught Cup (G2T) victor Dream Shake, multiple graded stakes-placed Ice Chocolat (BRZ), and graded stakes winner Masen (GB).
