Repole Issues Update on Owners’ Organization; `Amazed’ at Support

Mike Repole, who announced last weekend on CNBC's Spinster Stakes program that he was interested in forming an owners' association to address problems in the sport, issued an update on his progress Thursday night on the social media platform X.

The update reads, in its entirety:

“I am amazed and motivated at the overwhelming support that the new Association has received!!!!! I have a name for the association that is are awaiting final approval. Not only have so many people reached out for our cause to make the horse racing industry better, but I've had a few tracks and five current racing associations contact me expressing great interest in working together to make the sport better. A few things I'd like to address are: 1. Thoroughbred Retirement has always been incredibly important to me. I've owned thousands of horses over 20 years, and have always focused on being a positive example for thoroughbred retirement. Many times a horse is claimed away from you and it is out of your control what happens a year later or three years later. Even though I am a significant donor to Old Friends, New Vocations, Thoroughbred Aftercare. I and we can all do better.

2. I've been investing in horse racing for 40 years. The first 20 as a gambler and the last 20 as a owner & a gambler. Gamblers put up their money for the sport. We need to do A LOT more and better for the gambler. The way the tracks need to make money financially is to grow the handle not the takeout. We all love this great sport!!!!!”

After his initial statement, Repole was questioned about why he hadn't addressed Thoroughbred retirement and the gambler in his comments.

Inquisitively Makes All For Cornwallis Success, First Group Winner For Ten Sovereigns

Wee Sean Gan's Inquisitively (GB) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}–Ballyalla {GB}, by Mind Games {GB}), fresh off a breakthrough score in York's Listed Roses S., continued on the upgrade with a pillar-to-post victory in Friday's Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Cornwallis S. at Newmarket, becoming the first pattern-race winner for his freshman sire (by No Nay Never).

The 10-3 second choice had hit the board for Ollie Sangster in Royal Ascot's Listed Windsor Castle S., in his penultimate start, and broke sharply from the far-side stall to seize an immediate lead in this five-furlong dash. Unflustered on the front end until shaken up soon after passing the quarter-mile marker, he held a decisive advantage entering the final furlong and was ridden out up the hill to comfortably hold Rosario (GB) (Harry Angel {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths for a career high.

“I wasn't that confident beforehand, but he is a very tough horse,” commented trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy after securing a career high of his own. “He took the lead and grabbed the race from the get go. When I saw three horses in line halfway through the race I was a bit worried, but he breathes very well and relaxes. When William [Buick] asked him to quicken up he put it to bed very nicely. I think he is a five-furlong horse, but we will probably have to try the six [furlongs] later down the line. I feel he has got bags of speed, and he jumped so well today he took a length out of them from the stalls. He was sold to go to Hong Kong, but for the time being he is staying here. I would love to keep him, but we will have to speak to the owner. We've had a couple of Listed winners, but I wanted a Group winner this year and I was very keen to get a 2-year-old Group winner, so it is job done. The next step is a Group 2 or Group 1. The [Nov. 3 GI] Breeders' Cup [Juvenile Turf Sprint] is a possibility and we will have to discuss it, but it is not out of the question.”

Pedigree Notes

Inquisitively, the seventh of eight foals, is one of three scorers produced by a winning half-sister to G2 Temple S. victrix Priceless (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and G2 Mill Reef S. runner-up Doctor Brown (GB) (Dr Fong). He shares his second dam Molly Brown (GB) (Rudimentary) with G3 Chipchase S. victor Aeolus (GB) (Araafa (Ire) and Listed Golden Rose S. third Hezmah (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Molly Brown, in turn, is a half-sister to Listed Premio Nearco victor Stato King (GB) (Statoblest {Ire}) with this being the family of G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup heroine Rebelline (Ire) (Robellino). The March-foaled bay is a half-brother to Listed Cathedral S. and Listed Boadicea S. third Pixieleen (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits {GB}) and a weanling colt by Havana Grey (GB). He is also kin to the dam of last month's Listed Beverley Bullet Sprint winner Kerdos (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}) and the stakes-placed Dark Vintage (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: HISA Updates From CEO Lisa Lazarus

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) program has been in effect nearly five months while its Racetrack Safety regulations began in July 2022.

As we report each week in our updates on cases before HISA's testing and enforcement arm, the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit, medication violations are being discovered, fines and suspensions are being assessed, appeals are being heard, and there has been one case that's been overturned when an appeal was made to the Federal Trade Commission, the government agency that oversees HISA.

Lisa Lazarus, CEO of HISA, returns to the Friday Show for a wide-ranging interview to discuss some of these cases, how HISA is amending certain regulations based on industry input, and what is being done with some of the recommendations from its report on equine fatalities at Churchill Downs this spring. Lazarus also explains how the atypical findings policy works, differentiating between contamination from hay or feed supplements vs. positive tests from human medications or street drugs that may be traced to a trainer's employees.

At least two cases have been overturned on appeal, one involving medication and the other alleged overuse of the riding crop that led to a purse disqualification. Lazarus said she does not consider those as defeats for HISA, but as proof that the system is working. “If we win every case, then we're doing something wrong. because then it means it's not a fair system,” she said.  “It's far more important that there's a system that everyone can buy into and believe in.”

At Three Chimneys, Gun Runner Becomes Third Stallion to Stand for $250,000 in 2024

Gun Runner has joined Into Mischief and Curlin on top of the roster of 2024 stallions with a $250,000 fee, Three Chimneys announced Friday morning.

He is the first sire in history to have sired nine individual millionaires with just two full crops. He currently ranks second on the TDN's General Sire list, behind only Into Mischief, with over $14 million in progeny earnings. Counted among his 13 stakes winners and 31 stakes performers in 2023 are Grade I winners Gunite and 'TDN Rising Stars' Echo Zulu and Locked, the latter winner of last weekend's GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland. They are three of 11 Grade I performers for Gun Runner this year. Recent GII Chandelier S. winner Chatalas is one of his seven possible starters in the upcoming GI Breeders' Cup NetJets Juvenile Fillies.

Volatile had a strong season with his first yearlings in the sales ring, seeing 75 yearlings average $135,000. He was the leading first-crop sire by average at Fasig-Tipton July and was the sire of the Three Chimneys' homebred yearling out of Love and Pride who sold for $1,150,000 at Keeneland September. His stud fee is set at $15,000 LFSN, up from $12,500 in 2023.

Palace Malice, whose 2024 stud fee remains at $7,500 LFSN, will be represented with Breeders' Cup starter Brocknardini.

The complete 2024 fees are as follows:
Gun Runner – $250,000 LFSN
Volatile – $15,000 LFSN
Sky Mesa – $10,000 LFSN
Palace Malice – $7,500 LFSN
