Australia’s Golden Rose: Runner-By-Runner Preview

An outstanding renewal of the G1 Golden Rose at Rosehill on Friday night features the horses and international jockeys who won Sydney's biggest 2-year-old races last season. The world's top-ranked rider, England's Ryan Moore, and star Brazilian jockey Joao Moreira will ride in the million-dollar race for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs. The Golden Rose is the eighth on a 10-race card at Rosehill, broadcast live by FanDuel TV and Sky Racing World (First post 9:50 p.m. Eastern/6:50 p.m. Pacific).

Golden Rose: Runner-By-Runner Preview

#1 MILITARIZE (gate 2, 8-1): Dual G1 winner at seven and eight furlongs beneath Joao Moreira, while giving trainer Chris Waller a sweep of Sydney's 2-year-old “Triple Crown.” Militarize closed encouragingly and lucklessly in his six-furlong prep and will be first-time blinkers.

#2 SHINZO (gate 10, 5-1): Absent since winning the world's richest 2-year-old race, the Golden Slipper (first leg of the aforementioned Triple Crown) in March, beneath Ryan Moore. Shinzo has not raced beyond six furlongs and this race has never been won off a layoff. Waller brushed aside questions of his unorthodox approach, saying that Shinzo has been in work since June: “He's come back stronger, physically and mentally … he's ready to go.”

#3 CYLINDER (gate 6, 7-2): Golden Slipper runner-up; 2-for-2 this season (the Australian racing season begins in August). Overcame trouble to win the G2 Run to the Rose, traditional six-furlong prep which has produced eight of the past 11 Golden Rose winners.

#4 KING COLORADO (gate 9, 6-1): Late-bloomer who won last season's final Group 1 for 2-year-olds (at a mile in June), when making just his third start. Returned in this season's first Group 1, the Winx Stakes, at seven furlongs against top-class older horses and finished midfield without ever seeing daylight. Jockey upgrade.

#5 DON CORLEONE (gate 5, 30-1): Finished fourth, second, and sixth across the juvenile Triple Crown races. Only seventh of nine in the Run to the Rose, but had some support and was cast wide after a troubled start.

#6 LIBERTAD (gate 7, 16-1): Group 3 success at 5 1/2 furlongs in seasonal debut, but then poor in the Run to the Rose.

#7 MORAVIA (gate 4, 12-1): Followed a debut maiden win with successive longshot seconds in stakes races behind Libertad and Cylinder. Pleasing progress.

#8 ENCAP (gate 3, 10-1): After some luckless runs, broke his maiden in a Group 3 at this track and distance.

#9 BUTCH CASSIDY (gate 8, 35-1): Third to Libertad; fourth to Cylinder. Consistent tryer, whose only poor efforts were on wet tracks.

#10 NADAL (gate 13, 20-1): The tennis legend has another racehorse named in his honor. Not to be confused with the 2020 Arkansas Derby winner, the Aussie Nadal broke his maiden at start #3 before finishing third in the Run to the Rose. Nadal has been supplemented to the Golden Rose for $37,500.

#11 SNAPBACK (gate 11, 80-1): Showed late-season promise in Group races, before returning with a facile maiden win at a low-level track as the 1-9 favorite. Massive class rise.

#12 GENERAL SALUTE (gate 12, 35-1): Decent fourth- and sixth-place finishes behind Libertad and Cylinder, respectively. Big odds both times and will likely struggle from his bad gate, but does get blinkers first time.

#13 CHARM STONE (gate 1, 6-1): Lone filly carries 4 1/2 pounds less. Arrives from Melbourne on the back of successive stakes wins versus her own sex. Highly rated but unproven beyond G3 Fillies. Also untested clockwise, but has trained well in the “reverse” direction. Co-trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent, Jr won last year's Golden Rose.

Suggested Exacta: 4 – 1, 3, 5

Countdown to The Everest

The world's richest race on turf is three weeks away, on Friday night, Oct. 13 (U.S. time).

  • Following Private Eye's excellent return to action in winning last week's G2 The Shorts, the runner-up in last year's The Everest has earned a slot for 2023.
  • Last year's winner, Giga Kick, the 7-2 future book favorite to repeat, will train up to The Everest following a draining defeat off a layoff in Melbourne two weeks ago.
  • A Golden Rose win by either Shinzo or Cylinder would pique slot-holder interest for The Everest.

The Rosehill card will be broadcast live on FanDuel TV this Friday night (First Post: 9:50 p.m. ET/6:50 p.m. PT) alongside cards from Kembla Grange, Toowoomba and Belmont. All races will be live-streamed in HD on the new Sky Racing World Appskyracingworld.com and major ADW platforms such as TVG, TwinSpiresXpressbet, NYRABets, WatchandWagerHPIbet, FanDuel and AmWager. Wagering is also available via these ADW platforms. Fans can get free access to live-streaming, past performances, and expert picks on all races at skyracingworld.com.

Mountaineer Jockey Fined $100 for Striking Horse in Face

Jockey Jose A. Leon has been fined $100 for hitting a horse in the face during training hours at Mountaineer Park.

According to a Mountaineer stewards' ruling, “Mr. Leon was caught striking a horse across the face on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023, during morning exercising.”

The ruling didn't specify whether Leon struck the horse with his whip or his hand.

Joe Moore, the executive director of the West Virginia Racing Commission, wrote in an email that he did not have any details about the incident beyond what the Mountaineer stewards stated in the ruling.

Leon, 24, represented himself at a Sept. 18 stewards' hearing, according to the ruling. Moore told TDN Leon has not appealed, but is still within his 20-day window to do so.

Leon, who has been a licensed jockey since 2018, has compiled a 38-for-304 record so far this year, riding in West Virginia, Ohio, Arizona, and in the mid-Atlantic region.

Over $4.5 Million Wagered Over First Two Weeks Of Legal Sports Betting In Kentucky

Two weeks after opening in-person sports wagering and one week prior to the launch of mobile wagering, Gov. Andy Beshear updated Kentuckians on the success of the retail launch and what they can expect next.

Gov. Beshear announced that preliminary numbers following the first two weekends of retail wagering indicate more than $4.5 million was wagered in the state.

“This is a strong number that certainly reflects the excitement Kentuckians have for the opening of sports wagering,” said Gov. Beshear. “With college football and the NFL season underway, plus the launch of mobile wagering, we expect that number will grow significantly.

“It has taken many years to get here, but sports wagering is finally a reality in Kentucky. This is a win-win for Kentuckians, who can enjoy a quality entertainment experience and benefit from funds staying right here in our state to help us build a better Kentucky,” added Gov. Beshear.

On Thursday, Sept. 28, Kentuckians can begin placing wagers on their mobile phones.

In preparation for the mobile opening, users can create an account and deposit money into their preferred, licensed mobile wagering application or applications. Gov. Beshear said that mobile partners are reporting that well over 60,000 mobile accounts are already pre-registered in the state. The Governor noted that not all application licensees have reported yet.

The following mobile applications have been licensed by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) to operate in Kentucky and will launch their applications on opening day:

  • Bet 365
  • Bet MGM
  • Barstool Sportsbook
  • Caesars
  • Draft Kings
  • FanDuel
  • Fanatics

Circa Sports Kentucky has been licensed by the KHRC and plans to launch a mobile application later this year.

Earlier Thursday, the Sports Wagering Advisory Council met and recommended additions to the sports wagering catalog. The wagering catalog is a list of sporting events and sports governing bodies approved for wagering in Kentucky. Additions to the sports wagering catalog include:

  • Formula One Racing
  • NRL (National Rugby League Australia)
  • PFL (Professional Fighters League MMA)
  • Bellator (MMA)
  • Universal Tennis League

The council also recommended criteria for selecting independent testing laboratories for technical components of sports wagering systems. The recommendations were approved by KHRC Executive Director Jamie Eads, subject to ratification by the full commission at their next scheduled meeting.

Today's news is the latest in a string of sports betting announcements by Gov. Beshear.

On Aug. 15 and 18, Gov. Beshear signed executive orders 2023-480 and 2023-483appointing members of the Sports Wagering Advisory Council. The council will advise the full commission and provide additional voices who have knowledge of the sports betting industry.

On Aug. 17, Gov. Beshear announced a timeline for sports wagering to open in Kentucky. That timeline now moves closer to full implementation.

On Aug. 22, the KHRC voted to approve temporary licenses for seven operators and nine service providers. The details of those approved for licensure and their business relationships are available here. A list of licensed retail sportsbooks is available here. Some retail locations and mobile applications are coming soon.

Kentucky chose a tiered implementation, which has been used in multiple states and which allows for the testing of policies and procedures before the full rollout that includes mobile applications.

House Bill 551 established a new excise tax on sports wagering: 9.75% on the adjusted gross revenues on wagers made at a licensed facility and 14.25% on wagers placed online or on a smartphone.

Sports wagering is expected to increase the state's revenue by an estimated $23 million a year upon full implementation. The increase in revenue will support the oversight of sports wagering and then be dedicated to the Kentucky permanent pension fund.

Additionally, 2.5% will support the Problem Gambling Assistance Fund. The fund educates Kentuckians on safe gambling practices, the risks of developing a gambling problem, risk factors and warning signs of gambling problems and available services to reduce the consequences of problem gambling.
