Santa Anita: $3 All-Turf Pick 3 To Be Offered Beginning Opening Day

In addition to a highly anticipated return to a conventional Pick Six with a 70/30 split, horseplayers will be greeted by an all-new wager on opening day of Santa Anita's 19-day Autumn Meet on Friday, Sept. 29—a $3 Santa Anita Pick 3, comprised of the final three turf races on each day's card.

With turf racing gaining rapidly in popularity both nationally and locally, track management is hopeful this new wager will offer players significant value with larger and more competitive fields on a consistent basis.

“Turf racing has accounted for over 50 percent of the races conducted at Santa Anita over the past two years and it really has become the foundation of our product,” said Jason Egan, Santa Anita Director of Racing and Racing Secretary. “The addition of an all-turf Pick 3 to our menu was a logical move and one that hopefully, will prove popular with our customers.”

Santa Anita's Autumn Meet will be highlighted by the 40th running of the Breeders' Cup World Championships on Nov. 3 & 4, with The Great Race Place hosting the equivalent of horseracing's Super Bowl for a record 11th time.

“It's an honor to host the Breeders' Cup and we are anticipating a truly exceptional event, with top equine talent coming from Europe, Japan and South America to compete alongside our North American stars,” said Egan. “It promises to be an outstanding two days of racing and we're very excited to showcase the best athletes–equine and human, on racing's biggest stage.”

First post time on opening day, Sept. 29, is at 1 p.m. and Santa Anita will once again offer fans free admission and parking as well as $3 beers and $5 margaritas on all Fridays, excepting Breeders' Cup day one—Friday, Nov. 3.

With expectations running high, the Grade 3, $100,000 Chillingworth Stakes, for fillies and mares at 6 ½ furlongs, will highlight the opening day card Sept. 29.

On Saturday, Sept. 30, four stakes, headed by the Grade 1, $300,000 Awesome Again, for three-year-olds and up at a mile and one eighth, will be included in a tremendous overall card with special early first post time of 12:30 p.m.

In addition to the Awesome Again, the Grade 2, $200,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship, presented by Estrella Jalisco at six furlongs, the Grade 2, $200,000 Eddie D, at about 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course and the Grade 2, $200,000 City of Hope Mile, will also share center stage.

The Autumn Meet opening weekend will be capped on Sunday, Oct. 1 by four stakes—the Grade 2, $200,000 Zenyatta, for fillies and mares at a mile and one sixteenth, the Grade 2, $200,000 John Henry Turf Championship at a mile and one quarter on turf, the Grade 3, $100,000 Tokyo City Cup at a marathon mile and one half and by the $100,000 Unzip Me Stakes for three-year-old fillies at about 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf.

1,000 Guineas Winner Cachet To Be Offered At Tattersalls December Mares Sale

Brilliant 1,000 Guineas winner Cachet is to be offered at the forthcoming Tattersalls December Mares Sale which will take place from Dec. 4-7.

Trained by George Boughey for Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, the 4-year-old is an intended runner in the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes before she joins a stellar line up in the second edition of the Sceptre Sessions, which will be held Dec. 4-5.

Cachet claimed a memorable front running victory in the 2022 classic beating subsequent Group 1 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes winner Prosperous Voyage and Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Tuesday with Group 1 winners Discoveries, Tenebrism, Wild Beauty, and Zellie further down the field. It was a first classic and Group 1 success for her trainer George Boughey, and Cachet very nearly completed a notable double just 14 days later when beaten a head into second in the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches.

The classic winner had previously won the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes on her first start at three and was also top class at two, having finished third in the Group 1 Fillies' Mile behind Cartier Champion 2-year-old and four-time Group 1 winner Inspiral and runner up in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes.

Cachet had first shown her aptitude for the challenges of Newmarket's Rowley Mile racecourse when breezing impressively at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale, where she was purchased by Highclere Agency for 60,000 guineas from her breeder Hyde Park Stud.

Cachet's sire Aclaim is a Group 1 winner from the flourishing Acclamation sireline and she is out of the Teofilo mare Poyle Sophie, a half-sister to the dam of Group 3 winner Whisper Not. Multiple classic and Group 1 producing sire Teofilo is also emerging as a broodmare sire of note, with 2000 Guineas winner Coroebus, Irish 2000 Guineas winner Mac Swiney and the Prix du Moulin and Prix d'Ispahan winner Dreamloper among the Group 1 winning progeny of his daughters.

Highclere Racing's Harry Herbert commented;

“Cachet became Highclere's first domestic Classic winner when winning the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas last year. She provided her 20 share owners with the absolute thrill of a lifetime at Newmarket and many will be there to see her sold at Tattersalls in December. Brilliantly bought by Jake Warren and trained to perfection by George Boughey, she is a stunningly beautiful filly with great presence.”

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony added;

“Cachet is the first 1,000 Guineas winner to be offered as a horse in training at the Tattersalls December Sale since Ravinella in 1988 and it is a great privilege to be asked to offer her on behalf of Highclere Racing who originally bought her at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale. Cachet is an outstanding race filly and offers owners and breeders a very rare opportunity to buy a Classic winner who is still in training.”

David Cabrera Suffers Broken Femur In Fall At Remington; Jockey To Undergo Surgery Friday

Jockey David Cabrera has suffered a broken femur due to a fall at Remington Park Thursday evening, according to a post on Twitter written by his agent, Jose Santos, Jr. Cabrera, currently second in the standings at the Oklahoma oval, will undergo surgery to repair the break on Friday afternoon.

Riding Steve Asmussen-trained filly Outlining in a one-mile turf contest (race seven), Cabrera was near the lead and driving for the finish when he was unseated at about the sixteenth pole, appearing to lose his left stirrup iron.

The filly continued on and appeared unharmed.

“He will be out for a while,” Santos wrote. “He is in good spirits and resting in the hospital with his family by his side. We are upset, but feel fortunate that it wasn't worse.”

Cabrera is a perennial leading rider at Remington, winning four straight titles from 2018 through 2021, and winning the Oaklawn Park riding title in 2022 despite missing the final 13 racing days because of injury. He is currently second in the Remington standings, and has won a total of 1,708 races since launching his career in 2013.

Old Friends Welcomes Emerald Downs Record Holder Mike Man’s Gold

Mike Man's Gold, the all-time wins leader at Emerald Downs with 26 victories, has been retired to Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement farm in Georgetown, Ky.

The 13-year-old dark bay gelding was donated by Karen Angelos, who has owned and cared for the gelding since his retirement from racing in 2022 by owners Keith and Jan Swagerty, who also owned and operated the Washington state-based Swag Stables.

When Swag Stables was recently sold, Angelos reached out to Old Friends for permanent retirement.

Bred and owned by the Swagerty's, Mike Man's Gold, who is by Liberty Gold–Chedoodle, by Slewdledo, was foaled in Washington state on Feb. 19, 2010. At that time, Angelos was the broodmare manager at the farm.

Mike Man's Gold boasted a nearly unprecedented 11-year career, which saw him become an absolute fan-favorite at his home track at Emerald Downs.

He began his racing career under trainer David Martinez as a 2-year old in 2012. He promptly captured his first three starts, all at Emerald Downs, including the Premio Esmeralda Stakes (Black Type), and the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association Lads Stakes (Black Type).

Mike Man's Gold continued his winning ways at Emerald Downs in all levels of racing. In 2013 he won twice in seven starts, which included the Seattle Slew Handicap (Black Type); and in 2014, he won twice in nine starts, which included the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic Stakes (Black Type),

“I've been friends with the Swagerty's for 44 years,” Angelos said. “We went to all of Mike Man's Gold's races and cheered him on. I still have his winning blankets when he won the Muckleshoot Classic as a 4-year old.”

Following his 4-year old season, Mike Man's Gold still ran in some stakes races, but also began running in lower level races, where he captured most of his wins.

In 2017, Mike Man's Gold had his best racing season, winning five of his nine starts. In September of 2019 he set the all-time wins record at Emerald Downs with 22 wins, en route to 26 victories in all before hanging up his silks at the age of 12 in 2022.

Mike Man's Gold closed out his career with 26 wins, four of them stakes races all at Emerald Downs, eight seconds, eight thirds, and $380,427 in earnings in 86 starts.

Now that Mike Man's Gold, whose nickname is “Mike Man” is at the Old Friends, Angelos is looking forward to a visit. “I love all the babies I've been involved with (about 150), but Mike Man, and his sister, No Flies on Doodle, stand out. They are special.

“Mike Man has been big part of my 23 years there and I can't wait to come see him at Old Friends and give him some peppermints.”

“They don't make them like him anymore,” said Michael Blowen, President and founder of Old Friends. “Like Soi Phet, Rated R Superstar, Welder, and Rapid Redux, Mike Man laid it on the line for a long time. He arrived on Wednesday a bit tired, but bright-eyed and alert. Thanks to Nancy and everyone at Emerald Downs, and Karen at Swag Stables, for making it possible for Old Friends to enjoy him every day.”
