Saudi Crown Reigns Over Grey Day in Pennsylvania Derby

The afternoon's graded stakes action at Parx kicked off most appropriately with the flashy grey Next (Not This Time) annexing the GIII Greenwood Cup S. and it didn't take long for the grey train to continue with Nobody Listen (Conveyance) taking the GIII Turf Monster S. With the remnants of Tropical storm Ophelia cranking, keeping the sky dark and the track murky, Saudi Crown (Always Dreaming) completed the grey graded trifecta in the day's feature, the GI Pennsylvania Derby.

Employing the same tactics used successfully earlier in the program over the sealed track, Saudi Crown exited Post 3 in good order, sprinting to the front as the quartet of Scotland (Good Magic), West Coast Cowboy (West Coast), Magic Tap (Tapit) and Reincarnate (Good Magic) surveyed from a length behind through a :23 opening quarter. Still coasting in front after a :47 1/5 half-mile, the Brad Cox trainee appeared to be keeping up the tempo as Il Miracolo (Gun Runner) and Magic Tap started to amp up the pressure turning for home while Dreamlike (Gun Runner) started to close from the back, several paths off the rail. With Florent Geroux riding the green colt with a firm hand in the final sixteenth, the pricey yearling purchase Dreamlike closed with purpose late, however, came up a half-length short at the wire. Il Miracolo was six lengths back in third.

“He broke super sharp. I was almost like a good length and a half in front, so when you break that sharp, it allows you to take a better position instead of breaking flat-footed or a step slow,” said Geroux. “He broke like a rocket and from there I thought I was in a great spot. Reincarnate, being so far outside, I thought it gave me an extra second and a half to slow it down in the beginning. I didn't see the fraction, what was it, :47? [:47.27]..Pretty good huh?”

Added Cox, “Right before he straightened up, I saw his ears going back and forth and I thought this horse is looking around a little bit. He kind of got a little lost. Florent said he was looking around a little bit when he came back to the winner's circle. He is still lightly raced and he had re-engage a bit and push him along.”

The 3-year-old is campaigned by Faisal M. Alqahtani of FMQ Sables, which has been involved in U.S. racing for one year.

A winner of his first two starts, including a 6 1/2-furlong test at Churchill Downs May 21, the OBS April graduate came up a nose short in the one-mile GIII Dwyer S. at Belmont July 1 and was beaten again by the same margin by juvenile champion Forte (Violence) in a sloppy renewal of the nine-furlong GII Jim Dandy S. July 29.

After two narrow losses, what made the difference today?

“Just progression. In the Dwyer, he had come off a 6 1/2-furlong [win] and was stretching out to a mile. He went up the backstretch a little quick that day but overall finished up well. He was passed and he came back and lost the bob. The last time out, he got beat a nose by a champion in his first run around two turns. We have asked a lot out of him in last two runs and I think he gained a lot of experience and has been battle-tested in his last two runs.”

And the speed-favoring nature of the track was also a factor, according to Cox.

“Based on what we saw throughout the day, I thought we had to be aggressive,” he said. “Sometimes, you see that and everyone has the same idea. He has enough natural speed to break clear off and he did and Flo did a great job.”

What next for Saudi Crown?

“He could be in the Classic,” said Cox. “Based off the pedigree, by Derby winner [Always Dreaming] out of a Tapit mare, with his physical deal, he could handle the mile and a quarter. Obviously, you have to get the right setup. I am not sure he has to have the lead in order to win. He is a pretty kind horse who breaks well. I will tell you this, with his Saudi-based ownership group–great guys to work with and for–I think the Saudi Cup is one race that is definitely on the target as well.”

Pedigree Notes
Saudi Crown gives his Kentucky Derby-winning sophomore sire Always Dreaming his first graded and Grade I stakes winner. The winner is out of the unraced mare New Narration, a daughter of Grade III winner New Normal (Forestry), and a granddaughter of Dual graded stakes winning New Economy (Red Ransom). This represents the family of Grade I winner Noble's Promise (Cuvee).

Caramel Swirl, Maryquitecontrary Among Dozen Princess Rooney Invitees

Graded stakes winners Caramel Swirl and Maryquitecontrary as well as four-time Florida stakes winner R Adios Jersey, top a dozen horses on the main list for the $200,000 Princess Rooney Invitational (G3) Oct. 7 at Gulfstream Park.

The seven-furlong Princess Rooney for fillies and mares is a “Win and You're In” qualifier for the $1-million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) Nov. 4 at Santa Anita.

Godolphin homebred Caramel Swirl, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, won the 6 ½-furlong Vagrancy (G3) May 14 at Belmont Park in just her second start in nearly nine months. The 5-year-old Union Rags mare won the Raven Run (G2) in 2021 and was second to champion Goodnight Olive in the Ballerina (G1) last summer, a race where she had her most recent start, finishing fourth behind another champion in Echo Zulu Aug. 26.

Rodney Lundock's Florida homebred Maryquitecontrary, seventh in the Ballerina, has been right at home at Gulfstream with six wins and a second from seven career tries. The 4-year-old First Dude filly put together a five-race win streak starting last summer that included wins in the one-mile Rampart on the final day of 2022 and the seven-furlong Inside Information (G2) Jan. 28. Her streak was snapped when she ran second to Goodnight Olive in the April 8 Madison (G1) at Keeneland.

Averill Racing, ATM Racing and Jayson Werth's R Adios Jersey, also bred in Florida, exits a front-running 6 ½-length triumph in the seven-furlong Sheer Drama Aug. 19 at Gulfstream, where she has a record of 4-2-2 from 10 starts. Fourth in the Inside Information, the 5-year-old Adios Charlie mare has also registered three state-bred stakes wins at Tampa Bay Downs, the most recent coming in the seven-furlong FTBOA City of Ocala last December.

Also among the main invitees are Beth's Dream, winner of the one-mile Heavenly Cause April 15 at Laurel Park that is 4-for-7 lifetime at Gulfstream; Flakes, winner of Gulfstream's 6 ½-furlong Game Face June 17; stakes winner Funny How, second in the April 7 Distaff Handicap (G2) at Aqueduct; Last Leaf, a four-time stakes winner at Gulfstream that is twice Grade 3-placed; and Chilean Group 2 winner Yuki.

Four horses are on the reserve list of invitations including Flag Woman and Into Happiness, both riding three-race win streaks, and Miss New York, winner of the July 2 Boiling Springs at Monmouth Park.

The Princess Rooney was won the past two years by Ce Ce, who used her 2021 victory as a springboard to victory in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint and the Eclipse Award as champion female sprinter.

Run at Calder Race Course from 1983 to 2013 before being relocated to Gulfstream, the Princess Rooney honors the 1984 champion older female and 1991 inductee into the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame that won 17 of 21 career starts and more than $1.3 million in purses from 1982-84. Five of her wins came in Grade 1 stakes – the 1982 Frizette, 1983 Kentucky Oaks and 1984 Vanity, Spinster and Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Damon’s Mound Rolls To Victory In Gallant Bob

Damon's Mound proved again that sprinting on dirt is what he does best, winning Saturday's $400,000 Gallant Bob Stakes (G2) at Parx Racing.

Owned and bred by Michelle and Cliff Love, trained by Michelle Lovell and ridden by Junior Alvarado, the 3-year-old Florida-bred son of Girvin out of the Stroll mare San Antonio Stroll prevailed by 1 1/4 lengths after a stretch duel with Nautical Star, who finished second, 3 1/2 lengths ahead of Gordian Knot.

The winning time was 1:10.24 for six furlongs over the sloppy track.

Ryvit broke fast and took the early lead over Sir Lancelot, with Damon's Mound laying third. Sir Lancelot put his head in the front on the far turn with Ryvit responding immediately, but by then Damon's Mound and Nautical Star were in hot pursuit. Damon's Mound went by Ryvit on his outside and held off Nautical Star, who was widest of all.

Post-time favorite Damon's Mound paid $5.60 in winning for the fourth time. He has four wins and a second in dirt sprints, including a convincing victory in the Saratoga Special (G2) in his second career start in August 2022. The Gallant Bob was his second graded stakes triumph and improved his career earnings to $601,700. Damon's Mound has run at six tracks over six distances and two surfaces in nine career starts.

Ninetyprcentmaddie closed fast to finish fourth, followed by Ryvit, Dreaming of Kona, Depoli, Praetorian Guard and Sir Lancelot.

Gallant Bob Quotes:

Winning jockey Junior Alvarado: “He's done very well the last couple races. He's been on the engine and making my job pretty easy. I rode him last time, kind of the same thing – broke out of there, put him on the engine. He likes that. He likes to feel that he's the one in control. They outfooted me the first part, the two faster horses on the outside, then I was sitting in a beautiful trip. When I started picking it and making my run he was there digging in for me the whole way to the wire.”

Mitch Butler, assistant to winning trainer Michelle Lovell: “Everything worked out real well. We knew there was some speed on the outside, and luckily the speed got in front of us, and Junior was able to take the horse outside like that and set up the easy trip. When he asked for the run, he just came to run just like we hoped he would, so it worked out real well. Probably as good as it could go.”

“I'm so happy for Michelle, of course, and the owners Mr. and Mrs. Love. We just found this spot, and it seems like he's doing so well and were just so happy that we have the horse in the barn and that he is doing as good as he is now.”

On Maxfield Overnight Stakes two starts back over mud at Ellis Park: “That day it rained right before his race. It came like a monsoon and I think it was just a different track condition, but today with the rain they had the track sealed all day and all night so it probably just worked out better for him.”

Jockey Irad Ortiz (Nautical Star, second): “He fought all the way to the wire. The winner is a nice horse. Going to the quarter pole, I was moving pretty good and I thought I had horse and I thought I was going to be hard to beat. But that horse kept fighting. I am really happy with the way (Nautical Star) ran. He is a nice horse. He handled the track pretty well. The track is pretty fair. They have been doing a great job.”

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. (Nautical Star, second): “It looked like we had him, but Damon's Mound is back into form. He won his last race and he beat us fair and square. I thought, coming down the stretch, that we had a good chance of winning. And Irad thought the same thing. The winner just never gave in. Full credit to him. I am happy with how he ran. He went from an allowance (a win Aug. 18 at Gulfstream) straight into this kind of company against seasoned horses. He is going to be a nice sprinter for us. He will go anywhere from 6 furlongs to a mile, at least, and he has a bright future ahead of him.”
