Sold Out Yearling Sale Kicks Off 2023 Indiana Fall Mixed Sale

The Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association's (ITOBA) 2023 Fall Mixed Sale commences on Saturday, Oct. 14 with a sold out live yearling sale. Eighty one yearlings by more than 40 different sires are cataloged.

The live yearling sale will be held at the Horseshoe Indianapolis Receiving Barn at 1 p.m. A paddock sale of horses of racing age will begin immediately following the yearling sale.

The catalog for the live yearling sale is available now at ITOBA.com. ITOBA is offering a $5,000 bonus to the buyer and seller of the yearling purchased at the live yearling sale that earns the most money as a 2-year-old at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

“We are very excited about the diversity and number of stallions represented in this year's ITOBA Yearling Sale,” says Pat McGhee, president of ITOBA. “Our sale has everything from new stallions with their first crop in the sales ring to proven dirt and turf stallions. With over 40 stallions represented, we have something for every buyer.”

A mixed digital sale featuring weanlings, broodmares, horses of racing age, and yearlings (including RNAs from the live yearling sale) to be held on Oct. 16-19th on HorseAuctionsUSA.com will conclude the Fall Mixed Sale.

The live yearling sale and paddock sale will also be broadcast and accept online bidding through Horse Auctions USA.

The Fall Mixed Sale gives people around the world the opportunity to get involved in Indiana's lucrative Thoroughbred breeding and racing program. Twenty eight of the 38 stakes held at Horseshoe Indianapolis in 2023 are restricted to Indiana-bred and -sired horses. These stakes have combined purses of more than $3.4 million. The purses for the bred and sired horses in Indiana are among the best of any regional program.

The response to the state's growing program has been tremendous. Indiana was one of just two states with an increase in mares bred in 2022 compared to the prior year. An economic impact analysis conducted by Purdue University shows that Indiana has had a 59 percent increase in horses owned, trained, and bred in the state from 2007 to 2020.

Former Trainer Darren Weir And Two Others Hit With New Animal Cruelty Charges Over Jigger Video

Australian trainer Darren Weir, trainer Jarrod McLean and stablehand Tyson Kermond, who were found guilty of animal cruelty in the Australian magistrates court in December, have each been hit with fresh racing charges by the Racing Victoria stewards on Thursday, The Age reported.

Each man was given 10 charges relating to the use of an electronic apparatus or “jigger” on Yogi (NZ) (Raise The Flag {GB}), Red Cardinal (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and Tosen Basil (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) when they trained on a treadmill at Weir's Warrnambool stables on Oct. 30, 2018. The trio were caught on video using a jigger. All three were handed four charges for corrupt conduct and six charges for animal cruelty apiece.

Weir was originally disqualified for four years beginning in February of 2019 due to being in possession of jiggers that were found in his bedroom following a police raid. If he is convicted again, he would be banned from working with horses for life. Currently, he is pre-training horses.

“The charges relate to the stewards' inquiry into the conduct of Mr. Weir, Mr. McLean and Mr. Kermond which was reactivated after further evidence was presented in the Magistrates' Court on 14 December 2022 in the course of criminal proceedings against the three individuals,” the stewards' statement said.

“Since December, the stewards have conducted a comprehensive investigation involving interviews with multiple persons and analysis of a substantial volume of materials.”

“Mr. Weir was at all relevant times the licensed trainer of Red Cardinal, Tosen Basil and Yogi.

“On or about 30 October 2018, on each horse Mr. Weir used an electric or electronic apparatus capable of affecting their performance in a race.

“Mr. Weir applied the apparatus to Red Cardinal, Tosen Basil and Yogi with the intention of affecting their performance, and thereby affecting their results in future races.”

“The original penalties related to the possession charges and that matter proceeded on the evidence that was available at that time,” Jamie Stier, Racing Victoria's executive general manager of integrity services, said in December last year.

“Following yesterday's open court hearing, there's been further evidence come to light.

“In October 2019, the stewards actually opened an inquiry into the criminal charges laid by the police, so that inquiry has been sitting there open. The stewards have reactivated their inquiry now, and they will now consider any evidence that becomes available to them.”

A date with the Victorian Racing Tribunal is pending for the three men.

John O'Mera and Cheyenne Stables classy Grade 3-winning Pennsylvania-bred Roses for Debra is set to return to Presque Isle Downs & Casino from her New York base and face a solid field of 11 rivals that entered Monday's 15th running of the $300,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters (G2), the marquee race of the season at the Erie, Pa track.

Run at 6 ½ furlongs for fillies and mares, the Presque Isle Downs Masters is the featured seventh race on the nine-race card. Post time for the Masters is 5:42 p.m. (all times Eastern), first post is 3 p.m. Along with the Presque Isle Downs Masters, the card also includes the $150,000 Presque Isle Mile in Race 5 at 4:48 p.m.

Roses for Debra is arguably one of the top recent performers in the field for the Presque Isle Downs Masters. Two races earlier in the card, Woodslane Farm's Wolfie's Dynaghost leads a field of nine colts and geldings that entered the Presque Isle Downs Mile. Trained by Jonathan Thomas, Wolfie's Dynaghost is 3-for-4 lifetime over the all-weather surface including a victory in Kentucky Cup Classic at Turfway Park. Jockey Florent Geroux will have the return call from post 3.

Breaking one spot to the inside of Wolfie's Dynaghost is Mad Dog Racing Stable's multiple graded stakes placed Carrothers. The 5-year-old gelding, who's under the care of Canadian-based trainer Martin Drexler, was the runner-up to Tyson in the Seagram Cup (GII) in late July at Woodbine.
