Trueshan Back To Winning Ways In The Doncaster Cup

Beaten in the G2 Doncaster Cup last season, Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) showed his story is far from finished back in that Town Moor feature on Friday as he registered an unorthodox success returning from a break. Only fourth in the G3 Sagaro S. when last seen in May, the Singula Partnership's 7-year-old had undergone wind surgery in the interim and there were obvious questions as to whether he could get back to his previous pinnacle in the staying division.

Things looked dubious for the 100-30 shot in the back straight as Hollie Doyle struggled to contain the imposing veteran behind the pace and as she let him go with five furlongs still to race it was touch and go whether he would last home. Separated from the other four in the straight, the pride of the Alan King stable could have given up as the Gosdens' Sweet William (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) gained a brief lead approaching the final furlong but instead piled it on to regain the advantage and record another impressive success by 1 1/4 lengths.

“That was definitely not Plan A! It's not the first time he's given me a rodeo either, but he can still win because he's so superior,” Doyle said. “He's back to his best. To do it that way round he must be. The thing today was we were going a pedestrian pace and it was breaking his stride, so when you are on a big horse like that I just let him bowl along and it was going to be make or break. The wind op has definitely helped. At Ascot earlier this year, we hacked around and he curled up a furlong and a half out whereas today he proved he's back to his best.”

It is rare to see a horse do so much wrong and still prevail at this level, but what we already knew about Trueshan is he is a true class act on his day in these “Cup” races. That was clear in the 2021 G1 Goodwood Cup, that year's G1 Prix du Cadran, in the last three editions of Ascot's G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup and in last year's Northumberland Plate in which he put up one of the all-time great weight-defying handicap performances. With Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) back in the mix after the weekend, this win adds spice to the division's autumn features.

Pedigree Notes
Trueshan has only two black-type performers under the first three dams, but one of them happens to be the current smart Australian stayer True Marvel (Fr) (Masked Marvel {GB}). In April, he was runner-up in the G1 Sydney Cup at 150-1, while two months later he proved that was no fluke when third in the G2 Brisbane Cup.

Canterbury: All-Turf Pick 5, 10 Percent Takeout Highlight Saturday’s Final Program

The 2023 live horse racing season at Canterbury Park ends this Saturday with a 13-race program beginning at 4:00 p.m. CT. The 53rd day of racing marks the conclusion of the 29th consecutive season since the Shakopee, Minn. racetrack reopened for live horse racing as Canterbury Park in 1995. The racetrack previously operated as Canterbury Downs from 1985 through 1992.

Average field size for the 13 races that include five turf races and eight on the main track is 10.23, a significant increase compared to the season per race average of 6.52 horses per race. The five turf races, races 1,2,4,6 and 7, allow for a special All-Turf Pick 5 wager with a 50-cent base and an industry low 10 percent takeout. There will be three additional Pick 5s with that takeout rate on consecutive races beginning in races 3, 6 and 9. The card also begins with a Pick 4 carryover of $32,160. That Pick 4 will offer a 10 percent takeout, also an industry low.

A pair of $50,000 stakes will be run as the eighth and ninth races, the Tom Metzen H.B.P.A Sprint and the Shakopee Juvenile, both at six furlongs on the main track. Doctor Oscar, winner of the Crocrock Sprint on Sept. 9, will be favored in the Metzen. The Minnesota bred 4-year-old owned by Pete Mattson has won nine of 19 career starts and has recorded Beyer Speed Figures, one accepted measure of a horse's ability, much higher than the six others he will face Saturday. Doctor Oscar, ridden by Alonso Quinonez, is trained by Tim Padilla who also will saddle Thealligatorhunter, a 5-year-old multiple stakes winner he co-owns with Mattson.

Trainer Mac Robertson has two in the Metzen Sprint, both with early speed, that could offer a challenge to Doctor Oscar. Plane Talk has primarily sprinted on the turf while Sir Wellington has been campaigned this summer on the east coast. Harry Hernandez will ride Sir Wellington. Hernandez is leading the meet in thoroughbred wins with 50, six more than Eduardo Gallardo who rides Plane Talk. Both jockeys have mounts in all 13 races.

Robertson won the Shakopee Juvenile in consecutive renditions from 2017 to 2021. Last year's winner Two Phil's, trained by Larry Rivelli, went on to finish second in the Kentucky Derby. This year Robertson has a pair of 2-year-olds in the Shakopee Juvenile. Both won their only starts with Gallardo in the irons. The colt Bourbon Aficionado will be ridden by Hernandez while Gallardo remains aboard the filly Xtreme Smoke Show, the 2 to 1 morning line favorite.

Mattson and Padilla will have a presence in the Shakopee Juvenile as well with General Battle Axe, owned by Mattson and Outofthedark, co-owned by the duo. Both 2-year-olds ran last Saturday in the $100,000 Northern Lights Futurity finishing second and fifth respectively.

Joel Berndt will be the leading thoroughbred trainer for the season. He has 52 wins and a 23-win lead over Robertson. Berndt has nine entered on Saturday, six for the meet's leading owner Bob Lothenbach who has 48 wins and purse earnings of $1,223,352. Berndt won the training title in 2020 and tied with Robertson for most wins last season. Lothenbach has been leading owner each season since 2020 and also won the title in 2002.

Canterbury Park remains open year-round with simulcast race wagering daily and a 24/7 casino offering table games and poker. A robust entertainment schedule is planned for the coming months with several vendor shows, snocross racing and extreme horse skijoring. More information is available canterburypark.com.

Great Weather, Great Crowd Expected For Saturday’s British Columbia Derby At Hastings Racecourse

With a rare 'Free Admission” policy in today's sports and entertainment circles, it is impossible for management at Hastings Racecourse to estimate attendance figures.

But with Saturday's 76th running of the Grade 3, $125,000 BC Derby, Director of Operations Ryan McCartney is confidently forecasting one of the largest Hastings gatherings in recent local thoroughbred racing history.

“All of our guest patios, private boxes and event spaces are completely sold out,” McCartney says.  “The BC Derby and BC Oaks have traditionally been premier events during the racing season and with fantastic weather forecasted, we're expecting a huge, happy crowd.”

Even retired BC Horse Racing Hall of Fame jockey Richard Hamel – a three-time BC Derby winner during his illustrious career – had to scramble to arrange a location for Saturday's card. As part of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Jockey Club of Canada, Hamel is hosting a group of former Hastings' riders and had to settle for sharing the Jack Short Media Lounge high above track level.

The six-horse BC Derby, race number eight on a bountiful nine-race card with a 5:40 p.m. PDT start, is being referred to by a panel of Hastings' handicapping experts as “wide open with no clear favorite.” That theory surfaced when Canadian Derby winner Abeliefinthislivin, trained by Hastings' leading trainer Barbara Heads and owned by Peter Redekop, pulled out due to a foot injury.

The Canadian Derby at Century Mile on August 26 was the second leg of this year's new Western Canadian Triple Crown that wraps up with Saturday's BC Derby. Winner of the Manitoba Derby at Assiniboia Downs August 7 was 15-1 long shot Mano Dura.

The Emerald Downs invader, Jamies Inheritance, a three-length winner over Air Force in the Century Mile Casino Oaks August 26, is the early favourite to win the 57th running of the $75,000 BC Oaks for three-year-old fillies, with Air Force considered a serious threat.  Jamies Inheritance also won the Washington Oaks.

Saturday's card also includes the $100,000 Sadie Diamond Futurity and the $100,000 Jack Diamond Futurity. The $20,000 Guaranteed Pick 4 will cover races 6 thru 9. Watch for special offers on HPIbet.com, Xpressbet, 1/ST Bet and Twinspires.com.  Start time Saturday is 2 p.m. PDT / 5 p.m. EDT.

Blue Point’s Big Evs Blitzes Flying Childers Rivals

RP Racing's Big Evs (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}–Hana Lina {GB}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) finished among the tailenders in last month's G1 Nunthorpe at York and rebounded in style with a scintillating pillar-to-post triumph in Friday's G2 Carlsberg Danish Pilsner Flying Childers S. at Doncaster.

The Michael Appleby trainee, who had earlier left his stamp on Royal Ascot's Listed Windsor Castle and Glorious Goodwood's G3 Molecomb, hit the ground running as the traps opened and held an immediate advantage before turning the screw with a 10.72 second furlong. Clear of threats on the front end throughout, the 9-4 favourite was asked to stretch by Tom Marquand with a quarter-mile remaining and enjoyed splendid isolation in the closing stages, hitting the line with a 2 3/4-length buffer back to Flora Of Bermuda (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Rosario (Ire) (Harry Angel {Ire}), who became upset in the stalls beforehand, was best of the rest and finished 1 3/4 lengths adrift in third.

“After he jumped out of the stalls there wasn't really a doubt,” said Appleby after claiming a career high of his own. “You've got to be up the front on this [soft] ground and once he got three or four lengths on them they weren't going to catch him. It is not the ideal ground for him, but he's got the job done well and he's won a Molecomb and a Flying Childers on soft ground now. We just had to put a line through the Nunthorpe. I think he had an exceptionally hard race at Goodwood and that just took its toll.”    Looking forward to loftier targets, the trainer added, “I think it will be the Breeders' Cup next for the [GI] Juvenile Turf Sprint and he'll go straight there. It's five furlongs at Santa Anita which should be ideal and, if he can get the rail, he could be difficult to peg back. He's been an amazing horse, the owners have turned down some big bids and there'll be more now, but luckily he's not for sale.”

Pedigree Notes

Big Evs, the sixth of eight foals, is one of four scorers thrown by a daughter of G1 Cheveley Park S.-winning European champion Queen's Logic (Ire) (Grand Lodge), herself a half-sister to MG1SW sire Dylan Thomas (Ire) (Danehill) and G1 1000 Guineas heroine Homecoming Queen (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}). Queen's Logic's leading performer is G2 Lowther S., G2 Diadem S. and G3 Princess Margaret S. victrix Lady Of The Desert (Rahy), who also hit the board in the G1 Cheveley Park S., G1 Haydock Sprint Cup and G1 Prix de l'Abbaye. Lady Of The Desert, in turn, is the dam of G2 Lowther S. winner Queen Kindly (GB) (Frankel {GB}), herself the dam of Lowther runner-up and G3 Firth Of Clyde S. third Queen Me (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). The March-foaled bay, whose family also features G1 Derby hero Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), is kin to a yearling filly by Ribchester (Ire) and a weanling colt by Earthlight (Ire).
