Also part of The Castlebridge consignment is Rhythm N Hooves (GB) (Pearl Secret {GB}) (lot 188), the winner of the Palace of Holyroodhouse S. at Royal Ascot; and French Claim (Fr) (French Fifteen {Fr}) (lot 195), the third-place finisher in last year's Irish Derby and most recently runner-up in the Listed Vintage Crop S. at Navan.

Some notable 2-year-olds slated to sell include recent Bellewstown maiden winner G'Day Mate (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) (lot 253), Listed Premio Criterium Varesino S. winner Man With The Plan (Ire) (James Garfield {Ire}) (lot 254) and G2 Richmond S. runner-up Hala Emaraaty (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) (lot 153).

“The Tattersalls August Sale has quickly proven itself to be a popular fixture for both vendors and purchasers, having been introduced for the first time in 2020 in response to COVID-related circumstances,” Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said. “We are delighted to catalogue 353 lots for this year's edition and look forward to welcoming a wide cross section of buyers, both domestic and from further afield, to Park Paddocks on the back of a strong Summer Sale and record-breaking July Sale.”

Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance To Host Breeding Seminar On Aug. 19

With the increasing emphasis on mare power when it comes to breeding matchups, Thoroughbred breeders today need to understand the importance of what their mare can bring to the table just as much, if not more, than the stallion they choose. It can be a mind-boggling mission, but one that should be taken seriously.

The Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance is proud to present an in-person seminar with hopes to help breeders “Harness the Mare Power in Breeding” on Aug. 19. The seminar will take place at Pudder's in Shelbyville, Ind., starting with a lunch buffet and networking, followed by an insightful seminar and more networking for Indiana Thoroughbred breeding farms and owners.

With a commitment to the betterment of equine breeding practices, this seminar will bring together two experts from notable Spendthrift Farm, as well as local professionals, to share their insights and tips for selecting the ideal stallion for your mare. The event will encompass a wide range of topics, including genetic considerations, performance analysis and potential for sales.

Indiana stallion and farm owners are invited to attend the seminar and use this as a way to reach out to mare owners and potential breeders.

Registration for the seminar and lunch is free to all ITA members. If you are not a member, but would like to attend, a membership can be purchased on-site for a discounted price of $20, paid at the door. Door prizes will be given, thanks to sponsors of the ITA including Finish Line Horse Products, the ITA and more.

Speakers:

Mark Toothaker is the Stallion Sales Manager at Spendthrift Farm. He is a native of Van Buren, Ark., and attended Louisiana Tech for their equine program. He began his career working on the racetrack for trainers including D. Wayne Lukas, Joe Cantey and Gerald Romero, as well as training horses on his own. After a stint in the Army, he moved to Kentucky to run Liberty Farm in Midway for longtime breeder Allen Poindexter. Over the next few years, Mark worked as a consignor and sold a few Breeders' Cup winners, including Mile champion Kip Deville and Juvenile Fillies winner Stardom Bound, before joining Spendthrift in 2012.

Daniel Toffey was born and raised in Lexington, Ky., where his passion for horses began as a kid, spending countless hours with his father, going from barn to barn looking at horses all morning. Upon graduation from high school, Toffey jumped straight into the horse industry, working with the broodmare and yearling divisions at Spendthrift Farm. He spent time on the track with Al Stall, where he fell in love with the competitive nature of the horse industry. He then went to Woodford Thoroughbreds where he started breaking and training horses and quickly climbed his way to assistant trainer. Toffey spends his free time coaching youth basketball and is always surrounded by friends and family.

New Mexico: Grade 1-Winning Quarter Horse Jockey Summarily Suspended Over Possession Of Electrical Device

Prominent Quarter Horse jockey Hector Aldrete has been summarily suspended by the New Mexico Racing Commission after he was found to be “in possession of an electrical device in the paddock prior to mounting his horse,” according to a ruling posted on the Association of Racing Commissioners International website.

The incident occurred on Aug. 6, 2023, at Ruidoso Downs, ahead of the 10th race in which Aldrete was scheduled to ride “Jingle and Go” for trainer Armando Castellanos. Jockey Daniel Amaya picked up the mount aboard Jingle and Go, finishing eighth in the 350-yard allowance race after stumbling at the start.

The jockey's suspension is listed as effective immediately Aug. 6, pending the outcome of a hearing scheduled for Aug. 13.

The jockey was also issued a 30-day suspension by New Mexico stewards in late 2022 for “failure to ride out his mount.” Mounted on Quarter Horse Starlite Eagle in the fifth race at the Downs at Albuquerque on Sept. 18, 2022, Aldrete “failed to ride the horse out, standing up approximately 1/16th of a mile before the finish,” causing the horse to drop from “3rd place to finish in 6th place.”

Aldrete has won 348 Quarter Horse races for earnings of over $6.6 million in a career that dates back to 2007. He has finished among the top 100 Quarter Horse jockeys in the U.S. by both wins and earnings every year since 2019. Among his top mounts is Cinco Menudos, winner of the Grade 1 Namehimastreaker NM Classic Championship in 2015.
