Letter To The Editor: One Horse Owner Is Getting Out Of The Game After Saratoga Breakdowns

I have been mesmerized by horses from a young age. I was fortunate enough to own three horses before I went off to college. From there I played polo, rode in the intercollegiate horse shows early years, and eventually became a veterinarian.

My first racing memory was Proud Clarion in the Derby, and Dancer's Image eventual disqualification for a drug I had no idea of its purpose until years later. I listened to Tom Durkin at Tampa Bay Downs before his rise to the top. I saw Al Hattab at Aqueduct at age 12 when my brothers snuck me into the track. Horses have been part of my life for 60 years.

Last Saturday has become a turning point for me. I own an OTTB, a sweet 11-year-old Tapit son as a result of my involvement with My Racehorse ownership.

As I age I have become more aware of my limits, and the limits of my horses. Any misstep or stumble and l instantly hope they, and I, are ok. I used to play polo full speed, jump cross country with abandon but that is now sadly fading.

After watching Maple Leaf Mel go down three weeks ago, and New York Thunder on Saturday, I can no longer stomach watching racing. The final bit was “the sound like a baseball bat” when New York Thunder's leg broke is my finish line.

I saw Gun Runner, Nyquist, Songbird, Forte, Mage but I am now letting go. They were not my horses but the pain they and all their people suffered reached me too. I have cared for thousands of animals in my 37 years as a vet, seen so many things. I can no longer bear to see another race.

I am selling my shares in my two 2-year-old fillies as I will not watch them be exposed. Both have already had knee surgery after starting their time as race prospects, with kind and knowledgeable people.

I looked up the pedigrees of a few of the recent war horses I'm aware of, and their breeding does reveal lesser known names than the most popular, inbred stallions. I'm scared to death for the Flightlines to come, as he only raced six times. I wonder why — was he was questionably unsound, needing longer to recover from the cumulative trauma his freakish speed imposed?

I lived in Florida, and watched the death of Greyhound racing. As someone both on the inside and outside of the horse world, I fear the same death is visible not too far down the road.

Money and tradition be damned.

Change or die.

How many more babies will our dirt tracks claim?

Zadorsky, Into Happiness Top Fasig-Tipton August Digital Sale

The Fasig-Tipton August Digital Sale closed Tuesday afternoon with 84 horses sold for $2,074,700. Offerings included breeding stock, horses of racing age, and yearlings. A pair of active race fillies shared top billing, while the gross and number of registered bidders established new records for the Digital platform.

Zadorsky (Hip 1), a 2-year-old Tapiture filly and the first offering to close, sold for $180,000 to Hoolie Racing Stable from the consignment of Legion Bloodstock.

The bay filly was most recently first by 2 1/4 lengths in maiden special weight company at Saratoga on Aug. 13 under the tutelage of trainer Wayne Catalano. Zadorsky has won or placed in all three of her career starts, with earnings of $72,890. She was offered from her training stable at Churchill Downs.

Into Happiness (Hip 8), a 4-year-old daughter of Into Mischief, matched the $180,000 top price when sold to KPO Holdings from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

The bay filly is coming off a three-race win streak, including a pair of victories at Saratoga, the most recent on Aug. 9 for trainer Mark Hennig. Into Happiness has a record of 13-4-2-0 and earnings of $215,797 to date. She was offered from her training stable at Saratoga.

Stakes producer San Antonio Stroll (Hip 16) was the sale's top-priced broodmare, sold for $175,000 to Girvin's Girls from the consignment of Ocala Stud, agent for Cliff Love and Michelle Love.

A 9-year-old daughter of Stroll, San Antonio Stroll is the dam of last year's Grade 2 Saratoga Special Stakes winner Damon's Mound (Girvin), who provided a timely update when he won the Robert Hilton Memorial Stakes at Charles Town on Friday to increase his earnings to $379,700. The mare was offered carrying a foal from the first crop of G1 Santa Anita Derby winner Roadster.

“The August Digital Sale showed a very healthy market at all levels,” said Fasig-Tipton Director of Digital Sales Leif Aaron. “For the first time on the platform, we grossed more than $2 million in a single sale. A record number of registered bidders for a record number of entries shows that Digital is continuing to grow in the right direction. We're very excited for the future.”

In total, 84 horses sold for $2,074,700, good for an average of $24,699. Nearly 450 prospective buyers registered to bid on 122 offerings from 146 catalogued. The gross and number of registered bidders (448) were new highwater markers for the Digital platform, which launched in March of last year.

Results are available online.

The next Fasig-Tipton Digital will be the October Digital Sale, which opens for bidding on Thursday, October 5 and closes on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Nominations are now being accepted.

Geaux Rocket Ride Draws Rail Among 11 Entered in FanDuel Racing Pacific Classic

The 33rd edition of the Grade 1 FanDuel Racing Pacific Classic drew 11 runners Tuesday for Saturday's headliner and – for the first time – the mile and a quarter fixture for 3-year-olds and up attracted three 3-year-olds, any of whom could have a big say in the outcome of the $1,000,000 headliner.

As per usual, the Draw and post position assignments took place at the popular Brigantine Restaurant on the hill overlooking the racetrack where owners, trainers and jockeys for the 11 runners gathered with racing officials and Del Mar staff.

A pair of the 3-year-olds – Pin Oak Stud's Geaux Rocket Ride and Zedan Racing Stables' Arabian Knight – were on top of the list for the Classic's morning line with the former – winner of the $1-million Haskell Stakes vs. 3-year-olds at Monmouth Park in New Jersey last out on July 22 – penciled in as the favorite at 5-2 and his 3-year-old rival, who finished third in the Haskell, next in line at 3-1.

Geaux Rocket Ride, who will be ridden once again by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, drew Post 1, while “Knight” has Del Mar's former top rider, Flavien Prat, in the tack and they'll start from Post 9.

The third soph – C R K Stable's Skinner, stakes-placed in his last three outings – is 10-1 in the morning line and he and rider Hector Berrios will come out of Post 11.

The Pacific Classic will be the lead item on an 11-race, five-stakes racing card that will offer more than $2.3-million in purses, as well as a pair of “Win and You're In” opportunities for this year's Breeders' Cup, notably the $6-million BC Classic for the Pacific Classic winner.

Five 3-year-olds have won the Pacific Classic since its inception in 1991, most recently by the late Shared Belief in 2014. The younger horses get a six-pound weight break as they carry 118 pounds while the older horses must pack 124.

First post for the Saturday program is 1:30 p.m.
