Dual Grade I-Winning Juvenile Cave Rock Succumbs To Laminitis

Cave Rock (Arrogate–Georgie's Angel, by Bellamy Road), a two-time Grade I winner at two and runner-up to eventual champion Forte (Violence) in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, died Friday, Aug. 18 from complications from laminitis which developed after surgery late last month.

According to a statement from Dr. Vince Baker at the SLR Equine Hospital: “On July 28, 2023, after a routine morning of exercise, Cave Rock showed signs of colic while cooling out. He was treated with a tranquilizer and an anti-inflammatory. His vital signs did not improve, so he was sent immediately to SLR Equine Hospital. Upon his arrival, with in-depth diagnostics, it was determined that he had a congenital Inguinal hernia and the small intestine was lodged into the left side of the scrotum.

“Cave Rock was taken into surgery immediately. The surgical procedure required the resection of eighteen inches of small intestine. Recovery was routine and went very well, until signs of laminitis started on day six post-op. Despite very aggressive medical treatments, severe laminitis led to the demise of Cave Rock.”

Bred by Anne and Ronnie Sheffer Racing LLC, Cave Rock was a $210,000 Keeneland November weanling purchase and was successfully pinhooked by Fish Stables when selling to Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman for $550,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September Sale. Accorded 'TDN Rising Star' status following a six-length debut success at Del Mar last Aug. 13, the dark bay promptly added a 5 1/4-length victory in the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity Sept. 11 and took the GI American Pharoah S. by a similar margin Oct. 8. Sent off at just under 1-2 for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland, Cave Rock set a sensible early pace, but yielded late and was 1 1/2 lengths adrift of eventual champion Forte (Violence) at the wire.

Expected to be among the favorites on the road to the 2023 Triple Crown, Cave Rock returned to the Santa Anita worktab in early February and recorded six breezes, capped by a near bullet six furlongs in 1:12.60 Apr. 2, his last official work.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden illness and irreversible medical condition which led to the death of Cave Rock,” Baffert tweeted. “He was a talent at the top of his class and adored by our entire team. Learning of his death [Friday afternoon] from the caring team at SLR Equine Hospital was like a gut punch to everyone who cared for this special horse. We are left with the great memories with which he graced us but we will miss him dearly.”

Sister Otoole Repeats In CTT & TOC Stakes At Del Mar

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Sister Otoole did an instant replay in the featured attraction Friday evening at Del Mar, as she came from last once again – just as she had here in 2022 – and rolled to an impressive 1 1/4-length tally in the $101,000 CTT & TOC Stakes at 11 furlongs on the grass.

The winner, a 6-year-old mare trained by eastern-based H. Graham Motion, had the Italian expat Antonio Fresu in the boot. Last year when she won the race by half a length, she had another Italian expat in the irons, Umberto Rispoli.

Finishing second in the feature was John McCormack's Eylara, who had a half length on race favorite Neige Blanche, owned by De Seroux, Naify or M. Powell.

Final time of the marathon was 2:17.45. The winner picked up a check for $60,000, thus increasing her earnings to $395,470. She paid $12.60 top her backers for the win.

Racing resumes at Del Mar Saturday with a 10-race card highlighted by the 67th edition of the Grade 1, $300,000 Del Mar Oaks. First post is at 2 p.m. Sunday's scheduled card has been cancelled because of an oncoming hurricane/tropical storm.

With Hurricane Approaching Southern California, Del Mar Cancels Sunday Card

Bowing to Mother Nature and putting safety first on its list, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has announced a cancelation of its planned Sunday racing card.

With a rare and sizeable hurricane set to sweep into the Southern California area, the shore track determined it had little choice but to call off the nine-race program it had scheduled to close out the weekend.

“For the safety of everyone involved — our horses, our riders and all the workers, staff and fans — we have made the decision to cancel Sunday's races,” DMTC president and COO Josh Rubinstein said Saturday morning. “Unfortunately, the forecast calls for substantial rain and winds that appear to be headed our way. We are hopeful this will only be a one-day thing for us, but it is a necessary step we feel we have to take.”

This incident will be only the second time in the track's 84-year history it has lost a day of racing to the elements. In 2019, its Thanksgiving Day card was called off ahead of a projected storm.

Track officials have indicated that no individual make-up day will be scheduled in light of the loss. Instead, the plan is to arrange to work in many of the planned races on different days over the course of coming weeks.

Del Mar has a 31-day schedule this year which started on Friday, July 21 and goes forward to Sunday, September 10.  Racing is conducted on a Thursday through Sunday basis primarily with the addition of an extra card on Labor Day Monday, September 4.

Racing will resume at the track next Thursday with a 2 p.m. first post.

Night Of Thunder’s Vespertilio Impresses In The Debutante

Providing a boost to her G3 Silver Flash S. conqueror Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Al Shira'aa Farms' Vespertilio (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}–Prudente {Fr}, by Dansili {GB}) sprung forward to capture Saturday's seven-furlong G2 Alpha Centauri Debutante S. in style at The Curragh. Beaten 1 1/2 lengths when second to Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star in that important staging post at Leopardstown last month, the Willie McCreery-trained €320,000 Arqana Deauville August graduate was held up in last early by a confident Billy Lee content to let it all play out ahead. Produced to pounce on the leaders a furlong out, the 4-1 shot surged into the clear to score by 1 3/4 lengths from Sakti (Ire) (Caravaggio), with 2 3/4 lengths back to Kalispera (Ire) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}) in third.

“She ran a lovely race the last day,” McCreery said. “Billy apologised for sitting back last, he didn't want to sit that far back but he said she just got squeezed early and got lit up for a few strides so he just wanted to settle her. They were going a good gallop along and he was happy with her the whole way. She took him into the race beautifully and quickened up lovely.”

“She gets a free entry now for the Moyglare and we'll stick her in that now, I'm always trying to save a few quid! We'll stay local, she actually qualified for a race in France today because she was bought in Arqana but I really wanted to come here instead of travelling at this time of year. She's lovely, gorgeous, and she has tactical speed as well.”

Pedigree Notes
Vespertilio, who becomes the 20th group winner for her sire, is the fourth foal out of Prudente who is a full-sister to the Listed Prix de la Seine winner Prudenzia (Ire). She is in turn the dam of the G1 MacKinnon S. winner and international star Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the G1 Irish Oaks heroine Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) who produced the G2 Curragh Cup winner and G1 Goodwood Cup runner-up Emily Dickinson (Ire) from a mating with Night Of Thunder's sire Dubawi (Ire) and also the G1 Irish Oaks and GI American Oaks-placed Nicest (Ire) (American Pharoah).
Prudenzia also produced Dubawi's G3 Prix Penelope winner and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Philomene (Ire), while the third dam is the listed-winning Puce (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) whose leading performers were the G2 Lancashire Oaks winner and G1 Yorkshire Oaks runner-up Pongee (GB) (Barathea {Ire}) with this being the family of the G1 Oaks, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire heroine Alexandrova (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). Prudente's yearling colt is by Camelot (GB).
