No Sweat: Study Suggests Anhidrosis May Be Heritable Condition

A horse that cannot sweat at all or that doesn't sweat enough is suffering from a condition called anhidrosis. This condition occurs more frequently in some breeds and among horses with a familial history of the disease. 

The inability to sweat is a welfare concern as the horse is often not able to cool itself effectively in hot and humid environments. Research out of the University of Florida suggests that there may be a heritable component to the disease. 

Drs. Samantha Brooks and Laura Patterson Rosa used the Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) to look for genomic associations with anhidrosis. Using information from 200 horses, they discovered a strongly supported candidate region containing the KCNE4 gene. 

Sequence analysis showed a single variation on the gene that encodes a portion of a potassium channel protein with possible sweat gland outflow may alter KCNE4 function.  

This research suggests that there is some heritability to the condition, though many more studies are needed to determine whether breeding a mare with anhidrosis to a stallion that doesn't have the condition would “cancel out” the anhidrosis susceptibility.

Kuroshio’s Kairyu Notches Anglesey Triumph

Michael O'Callaghan trainee Kairyu (Ire) (Kuroshio {Aus}–Vegatina {GB}, by Lope De Vega {Ire}) was the clear-cut winner of a five-furlong Naas maiden last month and franked the promise of that debut score with an upset win upped in trip for Saturday's G3 Jebel Ali Racecourse And Stables Anglesey S. at the Curragh.

Kairyu employed patient tactics from flagfall and lobbed along off the pace in sixth through the early fractions. Making smooth headway once past halfway, the 4-1 chance quickened beyond rivals to seize control approaching the final furlong and was driven out in the closing stages to hold the late threat of 10-11 favourite Pearls And Rubies (No Nay Never) by 1 1/4 lengths.

“She looks very smart, Colin [Keane] said she doesn't want that [soft] ground and she was just good and tough,” said trainer Michael O'Callaghan. “The gaps appeared a little bit before Colin wanted them, but she has a savage turn of foot where she can go and put a race to bed. She relaxes so well that she'll probably get seven furlongs in time. I was thinking about going to the [G2] Duchess Of Cambridge at Newmarket last week, but I wasn't happy with her work so we waited another week. Colin thinks she'll be better on better ground and she'll probably go for something like the [G2] Lowther [at York] now. She's still a little bit high behind and she's going to grow plenty, so she could potentially be a very nice filly.”

Kairyu becomes the fourth pattern-race winner for her sire (by Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and is the only reported foal produced by Vegatina (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), herself a granddaughter of Listed Prix Isola Bella third Vassiana (Fr) (Anabaa). Vassiana is the dam of G3 Phoenix Sprint S. victrix Girouette (Ire) (Pivital {GB}), herself the second dam of G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S.-winning sire Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never). Son Of Minding A New TDN Rising Star In Ireland

Aidan O'Brien had annexed six of the last 10 renewals of the Curragh's Juddmonte Irish EBF Maiden, among them 2013 winner Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), and he claimed Saturday's latest edition with Henry Longfellow (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who collected a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette with a taking performance in the seven-furlong test.

The eventual winner was steadily away and raced in a close-up third initially and eased into second approaching halfway. Hitting the front soon after passing the quarter-mile marker, the well-backed 5-4 favourite was never seriously threatened thereafter and kept on powerfully under mild coaxing inside the final furlong to easily outpoint G2 Railway S. fifth Mythology (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) by 1 3/4 lengths.

“He's an exciting type of horse and I'm delighted with him,” the winning trainer said. “He's a Dubawi out of Minding and he looks a lovely horse. Minding handled that [soft] ground and he does bend his knee a bit, but he quickens. Ryan [Moore] said it was very easy, he didn't touch him with the stick and was very happy with him. He had been working well and he just came on the scene lately. For the last three weeks, week after week, he was working well.”

Henry Longfellow is the second of four foals and first runner produced by seven-time Group 1 heroine Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a full-sister to G1 Oaks and GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf victrix Tuesday (Ire), G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Empress Josephine (Ire) and G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial winner Kissed By Angels (Ire). Conclude Kicks Off Del Mar Meet With Oceanside Stakes Score

Little Red Feather Racing, Madaket Stables and Brereton Jones' Conclude, a Kentucky-bred son of 2017 Pacific Classic winner Collected, scored a smart 1 1/4-length victory in the Caesars Sportsbook Oceanside Stakes Friday at Del Mar as the seaside track north of San Diego, Calif., kicked off its 2023 summer season.

The chestnut colt was handled by Hector Berrios and was saddled by Del Mar's 2022 training kingpin, Phil D'Amato. This was D'Amato's third victory in the one-mile turf race that has been the track's traditional opening day headliner for many moons. For emphasis, D'Amato also saddled the second-place finisher, Michael House's Classical Cat.

Finishing third in the 78th edition of the hundred-grander limited to 3-year-olds was Great Friends Stable or Davis' Ah Jeez.

Conclude picked up a winner's share of $60,000 for his third victory in his fifth start. He now has a bankroll of $179,600. He paid $11.40 to his backers in the crowd of 21,733.

Conclude is out of a Proud Citizen mare named Believe You Can and was bred by part owner Jones, who stands Collected at his Airdrie Stud.

The Oceanside is the first of a trio of Del Mar turf stakes for sophomores. Next comes the La Jolla Handicap on August 6, a Grade 3 test that runs at 1 1/16 miles and carries a $150,000 purse. The final leg of the threesome is the $300,000, Grade 2 Caesars Sportsbook Del Mar Derby, which is contested at 1 1/8 miles and will be presented on Sunday, September 3.

Racing resumes at Del Mar Saturday with first post at 2 p.m.
