Geaux Rocket Ride Posts $27.40 Haskell Upset Over Mage, Arabian Knight

Pin Oak Stud's Geaux Rocket Ride, coming off his first stakes victory in the Affirmed at Santa Anita Park on June 4, soared to Grade 1 status on Saturday, winning the $1-million TVG.com Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.

Ridden and trained by Hall of Famers Mike Smith and Richard Mandella, respectively, the 3-year-old colt by Candy Ride raced within striking distance of front-running even-money favorite Arabian Knight while wide throughout, put that foe away at the top of the stretch, then fought off a late bid from G1 Kentucky Derby winner Mage in the final furlong to win by 1 3/4  lengths.

Bred in Kentucky by OXO Equine and sold for $350,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Yearling Sale for $350,000, Geaux Rocket Ride covered 1 1/8 miles on a fast track in 1:49.52. He paid $27.40 to win. Mage finished second, with Arabian Knight – who set fractions of :22.80, :47.11, and 1:11.65 – two lengths farther back in third. Extra Angle finished fourth, with G1 Blue Grass Stakes winner Tapit Trice fifth in the field of eight.

The Haskell is a Breeders' Cup Win and You're In Challenge series race, giving Geaux Rocket Ride a fees-paid berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic. This year's Breeders' Cup will be held at Santa Anita.

The victory was the fourth in the Haskell for Smith, who previously won aboard Holy Bull in 1994, Coronado's Quest in 1998, and Authentic in 2020.  Mandella won the 2000 Haskell with Dixie Union.

“The first day I saw him I wanted to ride this horse,” Smith said after the win, though this was his first afternoon ride aboard the Haskell winner.

Flavien Prat first rode Geaux Rocket Ride, winning a maiden race in the colt's debut at Santa Anita on Jan. 29. The French rider was aboard for the colt's second start, a good second-place finish behind Practical Move in the G2 San Felipe. Geaux Rocket Ride was considered a strong contender for the subsequent G1 Santa Anita Derby, but a fever knocked him out of that race and off the Kentucky Derby trail.

He came back to win the Affirmed with Ramon Vazquez aboard.

Arabian Knight was made the favorite to give another Hall of Fame conditioner, Bob Baffert, his record 10th Haskell win. The $2.3 million OBS April 2-year-old purchase was unbeaten in two starts, a maiden race at Keeneland last November and the G3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn on Jan. 28. But like Geaux Rocket Ride, Arabian Knight was taken off the Derby trail. The Haskell was the first race for the Uncle Mo colt since the Southwest.

Therapist Scores First Grade 1 Win, Hands Maker Third United Nations Victory

Michael Dubb's Therapist struck for his first win at the highest level Saturday when running down favorite Catnip to score in the $600,000 United Nations (G1) at Monmouth Park.

Under Javier Castellano, Therapist rated toward the back on the field early before uncoiling a sustained outside stretch rally and mowing down Catnip to get the victory by 1 1/2 lengths.

Therapist returned $26.60 after running 1 3/8 miles in 2.14.50 on firm turf.

Catnip, who took charge on the far turn after chasing early freewheeling pacesetter So High, a 55-1 longshot, from second, held for the runner-up spot. Therapist's 9-year-old stablemate Red Knight came on for third, three-quarters of a length behind Catnip

An 8-year-old Freud gelding trained by Mike Maker, Therapist notched his 13th win from 42 career starts.

Bred in New York by Richard Leahy's Oak Bluff Stables and Christophe Clement, Therapist was produced by the Smart Strike mare Lady Renaissance.

Maker won the 2020 United Nations with Aquaphobia and the 2017 edition with Bigger Picture while Dubb enjoyed a third consecutive victory in the race.

United Nations Quotes:

WINNING OWNER MICHAEL DUBB (won third United Nations and third year in a row): “I followed this horse throughout his career. I knew the ability he had and that's why I claimed him (for $50,000). When he got a little older they put him in claiming races so we tried to claim him for $25,000 and got outshook. When they put him back in for $50,000 I knew he was worth that and quite a bit more.

“This is Mike Maker's sweet spot. When we got him the horse hadn't been racing this long and I asked Mike why he wanted to go this long. He said, 'I see it in the breeding.'

“I wasn't here for the first two (Adhamo in 2022 and Tribhuvan in 2021). I never came here for the other two and got lucky so I came today. It's amazing to win this race three years in a row.”

WINNING JOCKEY – Javier Castellano: “He's a really good horse. I like the way he did it today. He's the kind of horse you can do whatever you want to do with him. He's a pro horse. Everything he does he does it the right way. I like this horse at this distance. He's a long-distance horse. He seems to always maintain his rhythm. I knew that horse on the lead (55-1 shot So High) was going to stop. I just rode my race. I knew he was going to come back to us. I didn't want to chase him and not have anything left. It's a long distance. You have to have a lot of patience and have a lot of confidence in the horse. It's amazing that he won a Grade 1 race at 8 years old. He's just a professional horse.”

‘Geaux’ Rockets to Haskell Victory

This year's GI Haskell was flattered by a GI Kentucky Derby winner in Mage (Good Magic), an undefeated $2.3 million OBS purchase in Arabian Knight (Uncle), in addition to this season's

GI Toyota Blue Grass S. winner Tapit Trice (Tapit), who realized a healthy $1.3 million at Keeneland last September. However, it was Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella who pulled the rabbit out his hat with Geaux Rocket Ride (Candy Ride {Arg}), who sprang the upset when coming from off the pace to best the Derby winner at odds of 12-1 in the 'Win and You're In' test for the GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar in November.

As smart as that looks, the honest truth is that I'm 72 years old and I thought I'm not going to let this get away from me. I'm going to go again,” said Mandella, who was returning to the Haskell for the first time since winning the race with Dixie Union in 2000.

“There is no man better to have this horse in his hands than Mr. Mandella,” said Hall of Famer Mike Smith, who was winning his record fourth Haskell. “He's only going to get better. We saw that today. This was the deepest Haskell field I've seen in a long time. For him to perform that was is a credit to Mr. Mandella and his whole crew. Of course, Geaux Rocket Ride deserves all the credit, too.”

Smith explained, “I think Richard was very confident in this horse. I was, too. When I found out two or three weeks that I was going to get the opportunity to ride this horse, my agent called me from New York and I was in California I flipped out of my bed I was so excited. I just knew there was a lot of upside to this horse and room to get better.”

Geaux Rocket Ride was taken in hand by Hall of Famer Mike Smith from Post 1 as Awesome Strong (Awesome Slew) immediately assumed command, but was soon joined by the fleet-footed Arabian Knight, who was hustled into contention by Johnny Velazquez from their outside draw. Carving out an opening quarter in :22.80, even-money choice Arabian Knight overtook the 60-1 shot down the backside, throwing down a, equally confident-looking half in :47.11. Meanwhile, the Pin Oak Stud runner was camped out wide as a slew of challengers swarmed in on the front-running duo including Mage, who was covered up between rivals yet picking up momentum with every stride.

With Smith giving his charge the signal leaving the backstretch, Geaux Rocket Ride bore down on leading Arabian Knight as Mage continued drew ever closer while widest of all. With the trio entering the home turn in almost unison, Geau Rocket Ride and Mage inched ahead of the wilting favorite, and while it looked like this year's Derby winner would just roll on by, he found another gear and pulled away late to score by a two-length margin over Mage. Arabian Knight held on to round the  trifecta.

“When Arabian Knight went out to the front I was very happy that [Awesome Strong] went out there with him,” explained Smith. “He wasn't getting away with anything easy and on his own, which I wasn't going to let happen if someone else didn't do it. But I was glad someone else did my dirty work and I was able to tip out and just relax.”

Smith added, “I always felt like I had a lot of horse left, but you don't know. When you get to them, they might, too, so I was just happy.”

“This horse is super intelligent. When you have a horse that has a brilliant mind you just work together. It's so much easier. It's like slicing butter with a hot knife. He just moves when you tell him to move. He does everything he's supposed to do.”

As for the runner-up, trainer Gustavo Delgado Sr. said, “This horse is very, very good. I think that five works, six works would have been better, but I had only four [going into the Haskell]. This race was very good for him. This sets him up going forward. It's a long year. There are many races more.”

Regarding the beaten favorite, Jimmy Barnes, assistant to Bob Baffert, explained, “It's quite possible that the long layoff caught up to him. He hasn't run since the end of January. He jumped out of there running and he was just third best today. We're starting the second half of the schedule [for 3-year-olds] and there are a lot of races left to run.”

Saturday's Haskell Day card drew 35,286 with on-track handle of $1,717,876.

Geaux Rocket Ride debuted with an eye-catching 5 3/4-length victory going six furlongs at Santa Anita Jan. 29 before coming home a respectable second to Practical Move (Practical Joke) in the 8 1/2-furlong GII San Felipe S. Mar. 4. Missing the GI Santa Anita Derby because of a fever, thus dashing any Derby aspirations, the $350,000 Fasig-Tipton July graduate once again found the winner's circle following Santa Anita's Affirmed S. June 4.

Pedigree Note:

Geaux Rocket Ride earns Candy Ride his 18th Group 1/Grade I victory. A full-sister to SP Mighty Mo, Beyond Grace is out of Flowers Athefinish, a half to Grade III winner Lotus Pool and Grade I placed Golden Larch. The 8-year-old mare produced a filly by Rowayton earlier this season and was bred back to Instilled Regard.

Shotgun Hottie Makes The Grade In Breakout Molly Pitcher Performance

Under a patient ride from Paco Lopez early on, Shotgun Hottie swung four wide into the stretch and drove past favorite Search Results to take the $500,000 Molly Pitcher (G3) by a half length Saturday at Monmouth Park.

Sent off at 8-1 odds, the 4-year-old Gun Runner filly was winning for the fifth time in 15 career starts and came in off a victory in the Lady's Secret Stakes June 10 at the Oceanport, N.J. track. Saturday's triumph marked her first graded stakes victory after two seconds and a third in graded events last year.

Shotgun Hottie returned $18.40 after covering 1 1/16 miles 1:43 and change.

Chilean-bred Le Da Vida finished second after racing last of seven early, and Search Results finished third, three-quarters of a length back, after pressing the pacesetter Loved for the first half mile.

Shotgun Hottie is trained by Cherie DeVaux for owners Omar Aldabbagh and Jeff Ganje. She was bred in Kentucky by Vincent Colbert from the Malibu Moon mare Re Entry. She sold to Ganje out of the Gene Recio consignment at the 2021 OBS spring sale of 2-year-olds in training for $45,000.

Molly Pitcher Quotes:

WINNING TRAINER – Cherie DeVaux: “Paco looked like he had a lot of horse throughout the race and when he ranged up on the backside it then was just sustaining that run. She did sustain her run and I'm just really proud of her. I left her here (after she won the Lady's Secret here in her last on June 10) under the care of (trainer) Dan Ward. She's been working over this track and has a lot of experience on the track. She's run two races prior here (Serena's Song May 14) and she's just improving each subsequent week.”

WINNING JOCKEY – Paco Lopez: “I loved my position today. My position was great. But I never expected it to happen like that. I got lucky today. I had to wait outside. When we reached the final turn I just let her go. Cherie DeVaux told me she was ready today. The last time I rode her (in winning the Lady's Secret at Monmouth Park on June 10) nobody wanted the lead so I put her on the lead. Today I had to wait a lot more. Cherie told me she would be ready for this race. I said, 'OK.' I know this filly she tries hard, even after she didn't break well. She was loaded and waiting and waiting. I knew [Search Results] was inside us, but my filly was good today.”
