Irish Derby: Where Did They Come From?

The first, third and fourth from Epsom all meet again after the Derby form was given a boost by the imposing runner-up King Of Steel when winning the G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot. Three sons of Galileo take on six of his grandsons, while five Aidan O'Brien-trained runners face one trained by each of his sons, Joseph and Donnacha.

AUGUSTE RODIN (Ire)
Deep Impact (Jpn) – Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})

Owner: Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier & Westerberg
Breeder: Coolmore
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien

Pedigree notes: The Derby winner hails the final crop of Japanese superstar Deep Impact and from a family which is not short on speed, his third dam being the King's Stand S. winner Casandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}). Her offspring include Auguste Rodin's grand-dam, the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Nassau S. winner Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), as well as Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), the dam of last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}). Halfway To Heaven's repeated matings with Galileo (Ire) produced not only the brilliant Magical (Ire) but also the treble Group 1 winner Rhododendron, and Auguste Rodin is the latter's first foal. The one to beat.

SAN ANTONIO (Ire)
Dubawi (Ire) – Rain Goddess (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})

Owner: Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier & Westerberg
Breeder: Coolmore
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien

Pedigree notes: The Dubawi-Galileo cross has yielded the 2,000 Guineas winner Night Of Thunder (Ire) and Horse of the Year Ghaiyyath (Ire). San Antonio is the second foal of Rain Goddess, who was second in the Irish Oaks, a long way behind Enable (GB), and won the G3 Snow Fairy Fillies S. Her grand-dam Virginia Waters won the 1,000 Guineas and was fourth in the Oaks. Winner of the Listed Dee Stakes, San Antonio was last seen finishing 11th of 14 in the Derby.

ADELAIDE RIVER (Ire)
Australia (GB) – Could It Be Love (War Front)

Owner: Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith & Westerberg
Breeder: Coolmore
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien

Pedigree notes: Adelaide River's dam's sole win was at seven furlongs, with the best performance of her life coming when finishing runner-up to Alpha Centauri (Ire) in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. The mare is a half-sister to the American champion juvenile and Coolmore sire Uncle Mo, and this is her first foal. He ran eighth in the Derby after finishing runner-up in the Chester Vase and is unlikely to play any more than a supporting role here.

PROUD AND REGAL (Ire)
Galileo (Ire) – Simply Perfect (GB) (Danehill)

Owner: Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Westerberg
Breeder: Coolmore
Trainer: Donnacha O'Brien

Pedigree notes: Brother to Group 3 winner Mekong River (Ire) and Group 3-placed Simply Beautiful (Ire), his dam was a top-class miler for Jeremy Noseda, winning the G1 Fillies' Mile and G1 Falmouth S. and placing in the 1,000 Guineas. She was herself out of the G1 Moyglare Stud S. runner-up Hotelgenie Dot Com (GB) (Selkirk), whose half-sister Bianca Nera (GB) (Salse) won that same race. The winner of last year's G1 Criterium International, Proud And Regal was subsequently seventh in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Improvement needed if he is to make his mark here.

SPREWELL (Ire)
Churchill (Ire) – Lahaleeb (Ire) (Redback {GB})

Owner: Mohamed Khalid Mohamed Abdulrahim
Breeder: Khalid Abdul Rahaim
Trainer: Jessica Harrington

Pedigree notes: Bred by Khalid Abdul Rahaim, who enjoyed great success on the track with his dam Lahaleeb (Ire), winner of the GI EP Taylor S. Sprewell, who finished fourth in the Derby, is the highest-rated runner for the mare and races in the colours of his breeder's son Mohamed Khalid Mohamed Abdulrahim. Like White Birch, he hails from a family cultivated by Cheveley Park Stud, where his unraced granddam Flames (GB) (Blushing Flame) was bred.

COVENT GARDEN (Ire)
Galileo (Ire) – Inca Princess (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire})

Owner: Westerberg, Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith
Breeder: Coolmore
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien

Pedigree notes: His dam has now produced six black-type performers by Galileo, led by the juvenile Group 1 winner Johannes Vermeer (Ire). Inca Princess won a six-furlong maiden in just three starts and is a daughter of the G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Miletrian (Ire) (Marju {Ire}). The outsider of the field, Covent Garden won a Tipperary maiden over nine furlongs last October and was third to Peking Opera in the Yeats S. on his only start this term.

UP AND UNDER (Fr)
Lope De Vega (Ire) – Hibiscus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})

Owner: Go Racing Limited
Breeder: Floors Stud
Trainer Joseph O'Brien

Sales history: A 220,000gns Tattersalls December Foal from the Floors Stud dispersal, the colt was bought back as a yearling by Yeomanstown Stud at Book 1 and then reoffered at Arqana's Breeze-up Sale, where he fetched €135,000 in a private transaction.

Pedigree notes: His listed-placed dam is a sister to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Line Of Duty (Ire) and half to G2 Great Voltigeur runner-up Secret State (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Granddam Jacqueline Quest (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) finished first past the post in the 1,000 Guineas but was demoted to second for interference. Up And Under has Group 3 placings behind both Sprewell and White Birch. Still a maiden, he looks useful but this is quite a stiff task.

WHITE BIRCH (GB)
Ulysses (Ire) – Diagnostic (GB) (Dutch Art {GB})

Owner: Mrs C C Regalado-Gonzalez
Breeder: Cheveley Park Stud
Trainer: John Joseph Murphy

Sales history: 75,000gns Tattersalls December Foals; 48,000gns (not sold) Tattersalls October Book 2 Yearlings.

Pedigree notes: Bred by Cheveley Park Stud, he was bought by Tally-Ho Stud as a foal but didn't reach his reserve at the yearling sales. Subsequently bought privately by his trainer, he has since changed hands to Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez and has run with great credit to be placed in both the Derby and the Dante. His dam was a multiple winner over six and seven furlongs from a family which includes the G3 Princess Elizabeth S. winner Clinical (GB) (Motivator {GB}).

PEKING OPERA (Ire)
Galileo (Ire) – Bugle (War Front)

Breeder: Premier Bloodstock
Owner: Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Westerberg
Trainer Aidan O'Brien

Pedigree notes: His Stone Farm-bred dam is a sister to the dual Group 1-wining juvenile Air Force Blue and her first foal, Yee Haw (Ire), by Frankel (GB), is a winner in France. Further family also includes GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Flanders (Seeking The Gold). Winner of a mile maiden at two, then the Listed Yeats S. on resumption at three, Peking Opera was seventh last Wednesday in the G2 Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot.

Elm Drive, Eda Among Nine Contesting Holiday Renewal Of Great Lady M. At Los Alamitos

Undefeated in two starts in 2023, Elm Drive will return to the scene of her blowout debut win when she takes on eight other fillies in the $200,000-guaranteed Great Lady M. Stakes Tuesday at Los Alamitos in Cypress, Calif.

A Grade 2 at 6 ½ furlongs, the Great Lady M. is the final of nine races on the special Fourth of July program at the Orange County track. Post time is 1 p.m. PT and scheduled post time for the main event is 5:05 p.m.

Owned by Little Red Feather Racing and trained by Phil D'Amato, Elm Drive, a daughter of Mohaymen and the Indian Charlie mare Lets Dance Charlie has begun her 4-year-old campaign with victories in the Grade 3 Monrovia – which was rained off the turf – April 8, then captured the Mizdirection – on grass – six weeks later.

Successful in half of her 10 starts with a bankroll of $408,140, Elm Drive cruised home by eight lengths at Los Alamitos on June 26, 2021, then returned last year to finish third in the Great Lady M.

Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who has won the Great Lady M. four times since 2015 – Fantastic Style (2015), Marley's Freedom (2018-2019) and Gamine (2021) – entered Eda for Baoma Corp.

A 4-year-old Munnings filly out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Show Me, Eda was successful in her return to the races April 26, defeating Teddy's Barino by a head as the 9-10 favorite in a $78,316 allowance at Santa Anita.

The win after a layoff of more than 13 months was her sixth in eight starts and pushed her bankroll to $472,600. She's 1-for-1 locally, having captured the Grade 1 Starlet in 2021.orp

Trainer Steve Miyadi and owner-breeder Nick Alexander, who won this race in 2022 with Becca Taylor, will try to go back-to-back with Rose Maddox.

A 4-year-old gray daughter of Grazen and the Unusual Heat mare Heat the Rocks, Rose Maddox has won five of 15 and earned $327,782. Worse than third only twice, she was most recently second in the Fran's Valentine at one mile on turf, defeated by a half-length by Eddie's New Dream.

Trainer Doug O'Neill is scheduled to have two starters – Awake At Midnyte and Vegas Magic.

Owned by J. Paul Reddam's Reddam Racing LLC, Awake At Midnyte, a 4-year-old Nyquist filly out of the Union Rags mare Midnight Union, was fourth as the favorite in the Monrovia, defeated by two lengths by Elm Drive.

A $320,000 purchase as a 2-year-old, Awake At Midnyte has won twice in 13 starts and banked $382,175.

A 3-year-old daughter of Good Magic and the Rockport Harbor mare Heidi Maria, Vegas Magic hasn't raced since finishing 10th of 13 in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies last Nov. 4 at Keeneland.

Owned by a partnership that includes Omar Aldabbagh, Todd Cady and Ty Leatherman, Vegas Magic went 3-for-5 last year – topped by a 14-1 upset in the Grade 2 Sorrento last Aug. 13 at Del Mar – and earned $243,200.

Both Awake At Midnyte and Vegas Magic will be making their Los Alamitos debut.

Dance to the Music will be seeking her second consecutive graded stakes win for Red Baron's Barn LLC and Rancho Temescal and trainer Mark Glatt as she makes her initial start at Los Alamitos.

A 4-year-old Maclean's Music filly out of the Congrats mare Beautified has been idle since winning the Grade 3 Desert Stormer March 25. The win as the 6-5 choice was the third in nine starts for Dance to the Music, who has earned $229,080.

Chismosa will be cutting back in distance after finishing third in the Melair May 28, a race prohibitive favorite Ceiling Crusher won by 17 lengths.

Owned by breeder Jaime Renella and trained by Rafael DeLeon, the 3-year-old Clubhouse Ride filly out of the Cal Dreams mare You Can Dream is seeking her first win of 2023 after going 3-for-3 last year. Two of her victories came in the CTBA and Generous Portion – stakes restricted to California bred s – at Del Mar. She's earned $209,000.

After cashing at 5-1 in a starter allowance sprint on turf June 2, Real Fire will make her first start at Los Alamitos for owner Les Blake and trainer Steve Knapp.

The 4-year-old daughter of Street Boss and the Stroll mare Hinder is 3-for-12 with earnings of $118,060. In two earlier tries on dirt, Real Fire finished third and second in consecutive maiden races last year.

Pammy's Ready, who has made 15 of her 16 starts on turf, will compete for the first time since finishing sixth of seven in an optional claimer down the hillside layout at Santa Anita April 22.

Owned by breeder Rockingham Ranch and now trained by Librado Barocio, the 4-year-old daughter of More Than Ready has won twice and banked $207,700. Her only start on the main track was a runner-up finish in a maiden race at one mile over a sloppy surface Dec. 27, 2021.

From inside out, the Great Lady M. field:  Elm Drive, Ramon Vazquez rides, 124 pounds; Eda, Juan Hernandez, 124; Rose Maddox, Hector Berrios, 119; Real Fire, Abel Cedillo, 119; Pammy's Ready, Kyle Frey, 119; Chismosa, Tiago Pereira, 114; Awake At Midnyte, Mario Gutierrez, 119; Vegas Magic, Antonio Fresu, 114 and Dance to the Music, Edwin Maldonado, 124.

CHRB Reports One-Third Reduction In Fatal Injuries At California Tracks

The California Horse Racing Board conducted a meeting on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at Cal Expo in Sacramento. Chairman Gregory Ferraro chaired the meeting, joined by Vice Chair Oscar Gonzales and Commissioners Dennis Alfieri and Brenda Washington Davis.

The audio of this entire Board meeting is available on the CHRB Website (www.chrb.ca.gov) under the Webcast link. In brief:

  • In his report to the Board, Dr. Jeff Blea, the CHRB equine medical director, advised that equine fatalities due to musculoskeletal injuries have declined by a third in FY 2022-23 (which concluded June 30) from the previous fiscal year. He reported on several new rules going into effect to protect horses – the latest in a long list of safety initiatives – and he credited those rules and procedures introduced at California racetracks with the decline in racing and training injuries. (The CHRB will be providing more details on FY 2022-23 fatalities in an upcoming news release.)
  • The Board approved the license for Pacific Racing Association to run a thoroughbred meet at Golden Gate Fields (GGF) that will operate from Aug. 26 through Oct. 2. In a departure from the historical schedule, GGF will be racing on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday during the meet, with Monday replacing Friday. GGF has been closed for the early summer without any racing or training. GGF Vice President and General Manager David Duggan reported significant improvements to the Tapeta racing surface since the track closed, including the addition of tons of new materials. The CHRB will continue monitoring all maintenance activities on that surface. Eric Sindler, counsel for the California Racing Operations arm of 1/ST, reassured Vice Chair Gonzales and the Board that the corporation's minor investment in some horses owned by Myracehorse.com is purely for marketing purposes and poses no conflict of interest in racing at 1/ST racetracks.
  • In his report to the Board, Executive Director Scott Chaney advised that 57 recommendations for the improvement of horse racing in California have been implemented, as detailed at http://www.chrb.ca.gov/RecommendationsPOAM.aspx
  • The Board approved the license for the California Exposition and State Fair for a fair meet at Cal Expo in Sacramento that will operate from July 14 through July 30. This State Fair meet has moved its first post to 3:45 p.m. – later in the day to help avoid excessive heat. The Board thanked Fair executives for being considerate of horses, workers, and fans.
  • The Board approved the license for the Sonoma County Fair for a fair meet in Santa Rosa that will operate from Aug. 3 through Aug. 13.
  • The Board authorized the use of some Advance Department Wagering revenue generated by Santa Rosa racing for a marketing program.
  • The Board approved the license for the Humboldt County Fair for a fair meet in Ferndale that will operate from Aug. 18 through Aug. 27. Fair executives discussed their efforts to deal with safety concerns about the grandstand before opening day. The Board asked them to work on contingency plans.
  • The Board approved the FY 2023-24 agreement providing funding support for the CHRB.
  • The Board authorized California Thoroughbred Breeders Association to conduct a horse sale at the Alameda County Fairgrounds on August 15.
  • The Board authorized Los Alamitos Equine Sales Company to conduct a horse sale at Los Alamitos on September 30 and October 1.
  • The Board renewed the license for The Tilted Kilt in Thousand Oaks to continue wagering operations as a mini-satellite.

No Nay Never’s TDN Rising Star Matrika Too Good At The Curragh

Bouncing out of Royal Ascot, Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star Matrika (Ire) (No Nay Never–Muravka {Ire}, by High Chaparral {Ire}) looked every bit a potential 1000 Guineas filly as she dominated Saturday's G2 Airlie Stud S. at The Curragh. With only eight days between this and her runner-up finish in the G3 Albany S., the half-sister to the G1 Prix Morny hero The Wow Signal (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) who had earned her Rising Star badge in a course-and-distance maiden had no room for error.

Fortunately, she also had Ryan Moore in the saddle and despite being behind the far-side group for much of the race the 2-5 favourite was never headed on the stand's side en route to a 1 3/4-length verdict over Gunzburg (Ire) (Sioux Nation), with 2 1/4 lengths back to Ashwiyaa (Ire) (Sioux Nation) in third. Moore, who was taking his Irish Derby Festival tally to five-from-five, said, “She had run a super race last week and is a typical No Nay Never two-year-old with lots of speed and talent. She had to do it the hard way, as they [the far-side runners] were probably ahead of me but she got into a nice rhythm. She was just waiting on them the last bit and got to the line comfortably, so hopefully there is more to come.”

Aidan O'Brien added, “She has a great constitution and we were very happy with her. The first day she ran we were surprised because she's very lazy at home, we didn't really know what to expect but she won. Then she went to Ascot and ran a lovely race, but was a little green and babyish. Obviously she learned plenty from it again. She came out of the race, lost no weight. She doesn't blow at all, it takes nothing out of her–she's very natural.”

“Obviously you'd hope that she might get seven, because she is very relaxed, but she is No Nay Never and they have a lot of natural speed and find it very easy to go very fast. We'll stay at six for a while and if we have to step up to seven we will. I don't want to be too easy on her, because she has a big backside on her and I don't want her to get too big. We'll have to keep her going to a point. You'd be hoping she's going to be a Cheveley Park filly.”

Pedigree Notes
Matrika is a full-sister to the dual group 3-winning Unicorn Lion (Ire), who was also runner-up in the G1 Takarazuka Kinen, and a half to the aforementioned The Wow Signal who also captured the G2 Coventry S. The third black-type winner for the unraced dam is the Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles scorer and G2 Rockfel S.-placed Miss Infinity (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), who also produced the G3 Prix Thomas Bryon runner-up Make Me King (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Muravka is also the second dam of the smart 3-year-old filly Breege (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), who was runner-up in the G3 Prestige S. and third in the G3 Princess Margaret S. last season and runner-up in last week's Sandringham H. at Royal Ascot.

The second dam is the dual listed-winning and G2 Prix de l'Opera-placed Tabdea (Topsider), a half-sister to the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Ta Rib (Mr. Prospector) responsible for the Listed Heritage S. and Listed Amethyst S. winner Tolpuddle (Ire) (College Chapel {GB}). Muravka's colt foal is by St Mark's Basilica (Fr).
