Pennsylvania Leaderboard: No Stakes Earnings, No Problem For Date Night Kisses

The purse and black type benefits that come with winning a stakes race are certainly appealing, but they're not the only way to make serious money with a Pennsylvania-bred.

Through the first four months of the year, Date Night Kisses generated $63,580 through various Pennsylvania incentive programs without making a single start in stakes company.

The 4-year-old Weigelia filly earned the bulk of that total in breeder's awards for Emilie Bateman, bringing in $33,200 in that category.

For horses bred and sired in Pennsylvania, breeders earn a 50 percent bonus on purse earnings for maiden races run within the state. Runners bred in the state but sired by a horse standing elsewhere are eligible for a 25 percent bonus. For all other races within the Keystone State, runners bred and sired in Pennsylvania can earn a 40 percent bonus, while those by out-of-state sires earn their breeders a 20 percent bonus.

Date Night Kisses is out of the winning Oratory mare Tribal Verse, who is herself a homebred for Bateman. The filly sold to Grassroots Training and Sales for $1,500 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling Sale.

Owner Walter Doggett III benefitted from $22,080 in owner bonuses from the first four months of Date Night Kisses' 2023 campaign. Depending on the track within the state, owner bonuses can tack on a boost of up to 40 percent on an overnight race's purse.

Meanwhile, WynOaks Farm, the owner of sire Weigelia, brought in $8,300 in stallion awards from Date Night Kisses.

The owner of a Pennsylvania-based stallion at the time of a foal's conception is eligible for stallion awards generated by that foal. Stallion owners receive 10 percent of the purse earned when a registered Pennsylvania-bred and- sired runner finishes in the top three in any pari-mutuel race within the state.

Through the end of April, Date Night Kisses won two of three starts and finished third in the other effort, all coming at Parx Racing.

Trained by A. Ferris Allen III, the filly began her season with a dominant front-running seven-length score in a one-mile starter allowance on Jan. 18.

She followed up on Feb. 13 with another wire-to-wire score going a mile in an allowance optional claiming race, this time repelling a late stretch drive by a rival to win by three-quarters of a length. Her final start in the four-month period was a third-place effort in an April 11 optional claimer, where a wide trip left her empty in the stretch.

Kodiac’s Good Guess Storms To Jean Prat Success

Reprising his winning performance in Deauville's G3 Prix Djebel in April, Hisaaki Saito's Good Guess (GB) (Kodiac {GB}–Zykina {GB}, by Pivotal {GB}) upset some big names with no hint of fluke as he powered to success over the same seven-furlong trip in Sunday's G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat. Sent off at 24-1 having failed to further his claims as an elite runner when sixth in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and second in the G3 Prix Paul de Moussac, the Fabrice Chappet-trained grandson of Cheveley Park's champion Russian Rhythm (Kingmambo) bided his time early under cover among the main group.

Unleashed by Stephane Pasquier to cut down the long-time leader Sauterne (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) approaching the furlong marker, he drew away to beat that filly by three lengths, with the same margin back to his Paul de Moussac conqueror Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) in third. The 7-10 favourite Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) proved a major disappointment, failing to land a blow and finishing a tame seventh as the 2000 Guineas form surprisingly unravelled in spectacular fashion.

“I love this horse,” Pasquier said. “He was good in the Djebel, but he was still immature physically and needed time to mature and grow into himself. The pace was fast which suited me and although I wanted to ride him closer to the pace, he was slow from the gates and in the end I had plenty of time to pick my position. He can shorten up or go further, it doesn't matter to him. He's a genuine group one horse.”

Kept to sprint trips at two, Good Guess was successful on his first two starts at Chantilly before finishing ninth and third on his next starts in this track's G3 Prix de Cabourg in August and Listed Prix Zeddaan in October. There was nothing in the form of the Djebel–where he got the better of Breizh Sky–that suggested he was top-drawer material upped to this trip for the first time and after his uninspiring Poulains effort he was behind Breizh Sky in the Paul de Moussac with no obvious excuse other than he was giving that rival two pounds.

Fabrice Chappet was not surprised by the outcome and said, “He's always been a good horse who we have liked for a long time. He won the Djebel nicely, missed the break in the Poulains and last time there was no pace which he really needs. That happened for him today and now he'll probably come back here in August for either the Maurice de Gheest or Jacques le Marois.”

The G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches third Sauterne, whose only poor run had come in the course-and-distance G3 Prix Imprudence, recorded a career-best with another heart-on-her-sleeve performance. After killing off the main British and Irish contingent in Chaldean, Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who all followed her in the five-strong separate group up the centre, she lost out only to the winner who had raced away from her.

Sauterne's trainer Patrice Cottier, who had enjoyed a red-letter day at Saint-Cloud on Saturday as Horizon Dore (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}) captured the G2 Prix Eugene Adam, paid tribute to the Marseille-based teak-tough filly who was having her ninth start since debuting in late November. “I'm delighted with the performance–she never runs a bad race and has been so consistent. She's been travelling a lot back and forth, so we'll see how she is after this before deciding on where she goes next.”

Alessandro Botti said of Breizh Sky, “Unfortunately, he was a little too far back and had too much ground to make up, but all things considered put in another excellent performance.”

Good Guess, who was a 420,000gns purchase from the Cheveley Park Stud draft by Chauvigny Global Equine at the 2021 Book 1 Sale, is a half-brother to the operation's Spangled (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) who was also at her best over this trip when winning the G3 Sceptre S. He is currently the last known foal out of the dam Zykina (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who also produced the listed-placed sprinter Jumira Bridge (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and is a daughter of the aforementioned G1 1000 Guineas, G1 Coronation S., G1 Nassau S. and G1 Lockinge S. heroine Russian Rhythm.

That Cheveley Park luminary's listed-placed Safina (GB) was also by Pivotal and is in turn responsible for last year's G3 Atalanta S. scorer Potapova (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the G3 Fred Darling S. winner Marenko (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). Russian Rhythm is also the second dam of Pivotal's G3 Princess Elizabeth S. winner Bashkirova (GB) and the fellow group 3 scorer Zonderland (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}). This is the family of the G1 Irish Oaks winner Alydaress (Alydar), the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine and excellent producer Park Appeal (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}) with her renowned son Cape Cross (Ire), and of the G1 1000 Guineas-winning champion Shadayid (Shadeed).

Sophomore Sire Watch Presented By Kirkwood Equine Advisory: 2023 Fasig-Tipton July Selected HORA Sale

Following is a list of stallions with 3-year-olds entered in Monday's Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale, regardless of their number of years at stud, including the number of horses cataloged and the farm where the stallion is currently advertised.

With much of the racing calendar still ahead of us, a sophomore offered in the Fasig-Tipton July sale sale still has plenty of time to take advantage of their age-related conditions in 2023, and develop into an even better horse in the years to come. There is still plenty of blue sky for many of the 3-year-old runners in the catalog.

Here are the sires with sophomores in the Fasig-Tipton July sale, along with analysis on that portion of the market by Kip Elser of Kirkwood Equine Advisory.

In an industry that seems to be going through an evolution on every front these days, one of the less controversial and more beneficial changes we've seen take place is the increase in horses of racing age (HORA) sales, which allows people to buy and sell based on their cash flow and inventory needs rather than waiting until the racing season has concluded. This week's July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale comes at a perfect time for both buyers and sellers, and the team at Fasig-Tipton has put together a great group of horses.

For buyers, it's at an advantageous time of year. We've gotten an opportunity this year to see where many of these horses will be competitive throughout the remainder of the year. For those top tier racing operations chasing those elite Grade 1 wins, they have 2-year-olds waiting for a spot at the track and they are gearing up to shop for yearlings. Their excess inventory, however, could well be the stars of the stable for the vast majority of owners and trainers.

Furthermore, this week's sale has quite a few fillies that have a good bit of racing left in them before they retire to the breeding shed. While I am no tax expert, I do know that racing stock traditionally depreciates more quickly than breeding stock, so there are some tax benefits to shopping for fillies this time of year and having some fun with them at the races before thinking about mating plans.

TDN Rising Star Beauvatier Extends Perfect Streak To Three

Yann Barberot trainee Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Enchanting Skies {Ire}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}) was two-for-two heading into Deauville's Listed Prix Roland de Chambure and remained on a roll after notching a 1 1/4-length success in the seven-furlong test. He became the 12th 'TDN Rising Star' for his sire (by Shamardal) in a May 9 five-furlong newcomers' test at Chantilly and doubled his haul later that month, upped to six furlongs at Saint-Cloud, with a defeat of 'TDN Rising Star' and subsequent G3 Prix du Bois victrix Ramatuelle (Justify) when last seen.

Beauvatier, now owned by Haras d'Etreham in partnership with Philippe Allaire, was steadied to track the leaders in third after a slick break in this black-type bow and was gathered together in readiness for his bid once turning for home. Angled outside for a clear run with 350 metres remaining, the 3-5 pick quickened in impressive fashion to seize control entering the final furlong and coasted to the line in the closing stages to easily withstand the late threat of Zabiari (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) for a career high.

“This horse has really a big engine and he didn't even have to extend himself to win,” claimed Barberot. “When Maxime [Guyon] switched him out, he settled the issue within two strides. My concern is that the horse lacks some strength and I would like to see him change physically, to grow and strengthen up. This is why I will give him a small break now and hope that it will do him some good. He will return in September for the [Sept. 3 G3] Prix La Rochette [at ParisLongchamp].”

Beauvatier, a €160,000 Arqana August purchase and half to a yearling filly by Siyouni {Fr}), is the first of two foals produced by Listed Prix de Thiberville runner-up Enchanting Skies (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), herself a sale-topping €500,000 Baden-Baden September yearling in 2016. The February-foaled dark bay's dam is one of four stakes performers out of Listed Kolner Fruhjahrs-Stuten-Preis third Estefania (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), headed by G1 Preis von Europa victor Empoli (Ger) (Halling). Estefania, in turn, is out of a half-sister to multiple Group 1-winning G2 German 1000 Guineas and G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi Danzig). Beauvatier becomes Lope De Vega's 113th stakes winner.
