Classic Winner And Sire Indian Haven Dies At 23

Classic winner Indian Haven (GB) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), a winner of the 2003 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, died peacefully in his paddock at Chapel Stud on Tuesday. The son of G2 Prix de Royallieu and G2 Park Hill S. heroine Madame Dubois (GB) (Legend Of France) was 23.

Bred by Cliveden Stud, the chestnut was a 62,000gns Tattersalls October yearling, and later brought 95,000gns at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale in 2002. Trained by Paul D'Arcy, he was ridden by John Egan for racing owners Peter Gleeson, Julian Smith, and Loz Conway. A first-out juvenile winner at Yarmouth in July of 2002, Indian Haven won the Listed Victor Chandler European Free H. in the spring of his 3-year-old year and landed the Irish 2000 Guineas by a length that May.

Retired to the Irish National Stud in 2005 with three wins from 12 starts and over $300,000 in earnings, he moved to the Bond family's Withyslade Stud in Wiltshire in 2012. Suzi Prichard-Jones leased the stallion from David Bond beginning in 2021 and accordingly he moved to Chapel Stud that year. His 2023 fee was £1,500. Overall, he sired several stakes winners led by group winners Ashram (Ire) and Aspen Darlin (Ire).

Roisin Close, owner and manager of Chapel Stud, said of the late representative of the increasingly rare Byerley Turk line, “It's been an honour to stand Indian Haven on behalf of Suzi Prichard-Jones. He was a pleasure to deal with, and got every mare in-foal during the three seasons he stood with us. He will be greatly missed by us all at Chapel Stud.

“Mostly it is a huge loss to the Thoroughbred racehorse, with another thread in an already diminishing line now gone.”

Del Mar’s Opening Day Single Ticket Pick Six Will Carry $1-Million Guarantee

For the first time, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will present a $1-million guarantee to any single-ticket holder who hits the track's popular Pick Six on its Opening Day, Friday, July 21.

It is likely that the seaside track will be conducting 10 races on its first program, meaning the Pick Six will be offered on races five to 10. The Pick Six wager can cost as little as .20¢.

In a potential Opening Day scenario where a horse player would hold the lone ticket on the Pick Six that pays, say $300,000, that afternoon, the track shortly thereafter would write him/her an addition check for $700,000 to make the payoff a cool $1 million.

“The Pick Six is one of our players' favorites,” said Del Mar's director of mutuels Bill Navarro. “Our special Opening Day enhancement is meant to put an exclamation point on the fact that the bet can be a life changer. We want to get the buzz for it started early.”

Besides the Opening Day special arrangement, track officials note that there will be multiple other days during the meet where a “mandatory payout” will be in effect for the Pick Six. Those additional dates will be announced after the track is up and running and into its 84th summer season.

Del Mar's record Pick Six pool was $10,751,768, which occurred on Saturday, August 21, 2021. Its highest Pick Six payout is $2,100,017, which happened on August 1, 2004 when there was a single-ticket winner.

First post on Opening Day is 2 p.m. The track's eight-week season runs through Sunday, September 10.

Freedom Trail Chasing Form Reversal In Saturday’s Kent Stakes

Gatsas Stables, R.A. Hill Stable & Steven Schoenfeld's Freedom Trail is the slight choice in the field of seven entered in the $150,000 Kent Stakes this Saturday at Delaware Park. The 1 3/8-mile turf affair for 3-year-olds has been carded as the eighth race with an approximate post time of 4:00 pm.

The Kentucky-bred trained by John Terranova will be seeking his first win of the year in the Kent. In his most recent outing the son of Collected ran fifth in the 1 1/8-mile Grade 2 Pennine Ridge over the Belmont Park turf course on June 3. Previously, he ran seventh in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 3 Transylvania on the Keeneland grass on May 23. Last year, he posted a record of two wins from three starts including at stakes score in the $120,000 Awad Stakes.

Godolphin's Phileas Fogg will be seeking his first career stakes victory. The Kentucky-bred trained by Michael Stidham has a career record of a win from two starts.  In his only outing this year, the son of Astern ran second in a one mile dirt allowance at Delaware Park on June 28. Last year, he broke his maiden going a mile and a sixteenth on the main track at Fair Grounds on December 8.

“We have always really liked him from the beginning,” said trainer Michael Stidham. “After he broke his maiden impressively first time out at the Fair Grounds, he came up with a little problem, so we gave him some time. We have always thought somewhere in the future for this horse would be grass based upon his pedigree and the distance should certainly fit him because he is a big galloping type of horse. It is a big step up right into a stake when he is still eligible for his 'other than' condition, but we felt like this was a great opportunity to try both the grass and the distance.”

XBTV Workouts Available For Del Mar, Saratoga Summer Seasons

With the focus of the racing world set on this summer's prestigious Saratoga and Del Mar seasons, XBTV will return to the venues to capture, catalog and upload morning workout videos for racing's marquee meets. For the past few years, the coast-to-coast teams have recorded over 3,000 workouts annually at Saratoga and Del Mar combined, providing handicappers and horsemen with access to the nation's top horses and future stars. The XBTV workouts are available without cost to those with a 1/ST account.

XBTV's video workout library is available at no cost for 1/ST account holders. To set up a free 1/ST account, visit XBTV.com and provide your name, email address and date of birth. A 1/ST account also allows customers to access the 1/ST BET and Xpressbet betting platforms as well as BETMIX handicapping software.

“This is an exceptionally exciting time of year,” said Jeff Siegel, Xpressbet.com handicapper and one of the country's most respected analysts. “The future stars of our sport are taking their first steps on that path and the analysis of a published work based only on a final time can be deceiving. XBTV video workouts provides that extra kernel of information to help horseplayers and horsemen successfully solve the equation and cash a winning ticket.”

As happens at Santa Anita Park and Gulfstream Park during the Winter and Spring, XBTV camera teams are trackside each morning working with the Official Clockers at each track to record as many of the workouts as possible. The full XBTV library allows handicappers to the opportunity to look at how a horse's work pattern might have changed – positively or negatively – throughout its career.

Several syndicates / fractional ownership groups, including West Point Thoroughbreds, MyRacehorse, Little Red Feather and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, have separate portals on the XBTV.com site to follow their horses.

XBTV's exclusive video workouts will return to Santa Anita Park and Gulfstream this fall prior to both track's Autumn meets.
