Coronation Glory For Siyouni’s TDN Rising Star Tahiyra

Coming through in a highly tactical renewal of the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot on Friday, The Aga Khan's TDN Rising Star Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}–Tarana {Ire}, by Cape Cross {Ire}) showed her class to widen her portfolio which already included an Irish 1000 Guineas and Moyglare Stud S. Sent off the 8-13 favourite to bridge a 45-year gap for Dermot Weld in this prestige event, the half-sister to Rosewell House's recent superstar Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) was instantly faced with adversity and a conundrum for Chris Hayes as she missed the break a fraction and ended up in rear off the steady pace.

With Ryan Moore content to saunter in front on Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never), Hayes opted to sit chilly at the back to save his mount's acceleration as he had with the same target to aim at in the Moyglare in very different conditions back in September. Unleashing a 11.59 penultimate split down the outer as she and Sounds Of Heaven (GB) (Kingman {GB}) made a sandwich of Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}) approaching the furlong pole, Tahiyra had forged ahead by the time the latter was in full flight. Despite Remarquee's eye-catching flourish, a length separated them at the line with a head back to Sounds Of Heaven in third.

There was an inquiry, but the result remained unaltered and Siyouni had his notable St James's Palace-Coronation double. “I can't wait to ride this filly in a truly-run mile race and see what she is really capable of,” Hayes said in the immediate aftermath. “She slipped coming out of the gates, it was Plan B and it was a slow pace so she did well considering she was running at a quickening pace. I knew this filly could over-race and that I could be there too soon, so it wasn't going to be straightforward and I just had to ride her like she was the best filly and the fastest in the field.”

For Weld, who saddled Sutton Place to win this in an entirely different era as a young man at the end of his twenties in 1978, this 18th Royal success was proof of the unending expertise of the septuagenarian. “I have been very fortunate in life,” he said. “She has brilliant speed and I suppose she's learning more about racing and getting more professional. I thought she won fair and square. Her sister was a brilliant racemare and this one is equally good. They are different sorts, this one has more pace. I enjoy so much training these fillies, I know the families and do my best to train them.”

Weld is set on giving Tahiyra a break now, after three tough encounters since the start of last month and having openly expressed that Newmarket's 1000 Guineas was coming a touch too soon. “I think the plan always was to give her a nice holiday, a nice break,” he added. “She's had a very busy spring and early summer and we will look at a programme for her in the autumn.”

While Remarquee lost some momentum when checked at the furlong pole, her trainer Ralph Beckett was not feeling unlucky. “She has run her legs off today,” he said. “By the time she did get rolling, the gap was closing–you don't see many of ours with a sheepskin noseband and she wears it because she is still green and has not had that much racing. I am not disappointed with her in the slightest. The Guineas was a non-event–she had only had two starts and is a slow learner! She will go for the Falmouth next, I think that will suit.”

Sounds Of Heaven's jockey Ronan Whelan said, “It was a great run. On paper it looked straightforward from my point of view and thankfully the race went like that. My filly has run a belter and I think there is more to come from her. She is not the finished article yet. She will be better as the year goes on.”

Pedigree Notes
Tahiyra's dam is the Listed Oyster S. and Listed Martin Malony S. winner and G3 Curragh Cup-placed Tarana, whose first foal was the aforementioned triple top-level scorer and Breeders' Cup Turf heroine Tarnawa. The second dam Tarakala (Ire) (Dr Fong) captured the Listed Galtres S. and was third in the G3 Noblesse S. and is related to the G1 Prix Royal-Oak hero and G1 Prix du Cadran runner-up Tiraaz (Lear Fan), the G1 Phoenix S. heroine Damson (Ire) (Entrepreneur {GB}) who took the G2 Queen Mary S. at this meeting in 2004 and that year's G3 Norfolk S. winner Blue Dakota (Ire) (Namid {GB}). Also connected to the G1 Prix Morny-winning sire Arcano (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and the G1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp heroine Gilt Edge Girl (GB) (Monsieur Bond {Ire}), Tarana has an exciting prospect in the 2-year-old colt Tarafi (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and a yearling filly by Lope De Vega (Ire).

Loveberry Injured, Will Not Ride Two Phil’s In Ohio Derby

Jareth Loveberry, who has ridden GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil's (Hard Spun) in all but one of his nine career starts, has had to take off the mount for Saturday's GIII Ohio Derby due to an injury. Gerardo Corrales has picked up the assignment for trainer Larry Rivelli.

Loveberry rode Wednesday at Canterbury Park and experienced some pain when his horse, Artemus Citylimits (Temple City), stumbled at the start of the Dark Star Turf Sprint S.

“I had a horse stumble out of the gate and jerk my left arm,” he said. “We're not sure the severity of it now. I am waiting to go back to the doctor to hear more. The X-rays came back clean but there might be some tissue damage. I am waiting for an MRI. I need an MRI to check the muscles and ligaments and all that to see if there is any damage there.”

Loveberry was booked to ride in the following race, the Canterbury Derby, but was taken off that mount.

The jockey's problems may have begun Sunday at Ellis Park during training hours when he was aboard a horse that stumbled and fell. He was not sure if both incidents contributed to his injury.

He said it was too early to know how long he would be out for.

“I won't know that until we know the severity of the injury and whether or not I will need therapy,” he said. “It's not so much that I am in pain. It's more discomfort. Talking to you right now, I'm not in pain. But there are certain positions I put my arm in and it starts to burn. There is a lot of discomfort.”

When reached by phone, Loveberry was clearly downcast. Though he's won 1,771 races and two riding titles at Arlington Park, he has not had many chances on horses capable of winning at the Grade I level. In addition to finishing second in the Derby, Loveberry has guided Two Phil's to wins in the GIII Street Sense S. and the GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks.

“How am I handling it? Not very good,” he said. “It's part of the life of being a jockey. I'll just have to heal up. I have had quite a few injuries, unfortunately. You try to work hard and come back the right rime. It's important not to come back too early because then you can show weakness. But if I can come back at full strength I think I will be fine.”

He said he will be watching the Ohio Derby from his home in Chicago and will be pulling for Two Phil's.

“I'll be rooting for him. I love that horse,” he said.

Corrales rode Two Phil's in his first career start, finishing fifth in a maiden race at Churchill Downs. Loveberry was the leading rider at Arlington Park in 2020 and 2021.

Study Finds Ice Blankets May Be Effective To Keep Stalled Horses Cool

It can be difficult to return a horse to pre-exercise temperatures in hot and humid environments, but sometimes it's even harder to keep a stationary horse comfortable in a hot stall. Horses that have exerted themselves are often hosed down or placed under misters until their body temperature returns to normal. Horses in stalls don't have this option and fans often can't move enough air to keep them comfortable when temperature and humidity really climbs.

Dr. Yuki Ojima and a team of researchers from the Kitasato University School of Veterinary Medicine in Towada wanted to know whether an ice blanket could solve these problems. According to The Horse, they found it could be a solution to improve equine comfort.

An added bonus? The ice blanket eliminates the need for the horse to have wet hooves for an extended period of time, minimizing the risk of thrush or white line disease created by some cooling measures.

To test their ice-blanket theory, the researchers used a light woven blanket and ensured that attached ice packs would not damage the horse's skin at three main contact points: the front of the back; the rear of the back and the loins. They also ensured that the temperature of the packs wouldn't increase so much in the sun that they couldn't cool effectively.

They used 19 horses to measure the following variables three times a day: skin surface temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, rectal temperature, and plasma cortisol. The horses were stalled and not exercised on study days, which were when the ambient temperature was forecasted to exceed 77 degrees F.

The researchers found that when horses wore the blanket, the skin temperature on the front of the back decreased over time; the skin temperature decreased to the rear of the back and the loins, but not by as significant of an amount, most likely due to blanket shifting, the researchers note.

[Story Continues Below]

They also found that the horses' heart rates, respiratory rates and plasma cortisol levels decreased when wearing the ice blanket.

More research is needed to determine how effectively the ice blanket works on horses that have just exercised.

Irad Ortiz, Jr. Headed To Finger Lakes For Monday’s Ontario County Stakes

Irad Oritz Jr., the nation's leading jockey in victories and purse money earned, will be at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack in Farmington, NY on Monday afternoon to ride morning-line favorite Looms Boldly in the $50,000 Ontario County Stakes.

Ortiz Jr., one of only five jockeys to win the Eclipse Award as the outstanding rider at least four times, was named to ride Looms Boldly by trainer Brad Cox after the colt's regular pilot, Manny Franco, opted to stay aboard Acoustic Ave, the second choice in the morning line.

Franco, who ranks eighth nationally in victories, had ridden Looms Boldly in all six career starts. But he also has been aboard Acoustic Ave for each of five career starts, including victories in the Aspirant Stakes and New York Breeders' Futurity at Finger Lakes in 2022.

Acoustic Ave, trained by Christophe Clement for Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, will be making his 2023 debut in the six-furlong sprint for state-bred 3-year-olds.

Looms Boldly has already made four starts this year, including a victory in the $97,000 Damon Runyon Stakes on March 19 at Aqueduct. The son of Goldencents out of the Forestry dam See the Forest has won two of four starts this year and is 3-for-6 lifetime.

Ortiz Jr., arguably the country's best jockey for most of the past decade, has won the Eclipse Award in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022. Only Jerry Bailey with seven and Laffit Pincay Jr. with five have won the Eclipse Award more times than Ortiz. He also has led the nation in victories the past six years, and his resume includes two wins in the Belmont Stakes and 14 in the Breeders' Cup.

The Ontario County is the eighth race on a nine-race program, with first post at 1:15 p.m. Eight 3-year-olds are entered in the feature, where Looms Boldly has been installed as the 2-1 favorite. Acoustic Ave, with a series of steady works dating back to May 10 in preparation for his season debut, is listed at 5-2.

Dr. Kraft is the third choice at 4-1, with the colt's regular jockey, Jacqueline Davis, aboard for trainer Chris Englehart.

The Ontario County serves as a prep race for the $150,000 New York Derby, which will be run at a mile and 1/16th on July 17.

Oritz Jr. also is listed to ride Dancers for Token for trainer Jonathan Buckley in the seventh race, an allowance/optional claiming event with a purse of $26,000.
