Porta Fortuna Is Medallion Racing’s Lucky Charm at Ascot

Ever since Porta Fortuna (Ire) (Caravaggio)'s win in the G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies Sprint S. at Naas last month, bloodstock agent Mark McStay had been pestering Taylor Made's Mark Taylor to make his plans to come to Royal Ascot. But the Taylor family is more known for probity and hard work than they are flights of fancy, and Taylor demurred, citing preparations for upcoming sales in America.

But when Porta Fortuna launched a determined bid and got up for the win in Friday's G3 Albany S. at Ascot to give Taylor Made's Medallion Racing partnership a win at the royal meeting, Taylor couldn't be blamed for maybe having thought twice about his decision.

“It's been two and a half hours, and I think my blood pressure has just come down to the point where I can have a conversation with you that you can understand,” said Taylor, reached after the race. “I'm a very superstitious person, so the agent who helped us find this filly, Mark McStay, he has been texting me literally three times a week since she won her last race, saying, `you've got to come, you've got to come, you've got to come.' And historically, any time I go to great lengths to see a race, things never go well. So, I've got a lot going on here, I've got to get ready for sales season, I'm not going. When I was watching the race, there were 18 horses, some of the best two-year-olds that have come out in Europe so far are in this race, and I thought if we could crack the top four it would be a great accomplishment. I was trying to temper everybody's expectations, and then when she put on that move and put everybody away. It was just surreal. I was watching it, saying, `is this really happening?' It was fantastic.”

Medallion and its partners-Barry Fowler, Steve Weston and Dean Reeves-bought the filly after the win at Naas, telling the TDN at the time that the partnership tries to buy one or two horses a year in Europe.

“I was very happy for our partners, both our partners in Medallion Racing that enable our team to go build the stable and also the people that come in alongside us like Barry Fowler, Steve Weston, and Dean Reeves because they put their confidence in us. With Steve Weston and with Barry, we've bought into some horses that have gotten hurt, didn't pan out, but they've stuck with us, and to see Steve Weston's silks cross the finish line at Ascot and to see him get to lead that filly in, it just really made me so happy because he's such a loyal guy, he's such a just great human being. I was crying for him, I was just so happy for Steve.”

Taylor said that Medallion has around 25 partners, each of which invests $50,000 or more in the partnership. The group raises from $1.2 million to $1.7 million every two years, only buys proven horses, and every partner is in on every horse.

“Our model is we buy all female horses and we buy horses that have already run who we believe have graded stakes talent off of what they've done so far. A lot of times, we have to pay; we're not stealing these horses. Everybody would like to go in and buy them, but we're also willing to let the existing partners stay in. A lot of times, we can leave them with the same trainer.”

In Porta Fortuna's case, they left her with her trainer, Donnacha O'Brien, son of the original owner, Annemarie O'Brien. Taylor said he felt that it was accommodations like that which help them to get a leg up on others who might be offering more.

“We try to be very accommodating partners, which allows us to get a crack,” he said. “Even though somebody else might offer more money, they're going to take the whole horse and do their own thing. So we try to be more flexible and just allow our people to participate on stages like Royal Ascot or the Kentucky Oaks or the Breeders' Cup or Grade Ones at big racetracks. Our theory is that once people get a taste of that, they might want to play on their own and take it to a larger level, or they might want to stay with this model. We have had some people that have gone outside and tried to do it themselves, which is great. It drives investment in the game.”

Porta Fortuna was well-represented by her American owners at Ascot this week, with Medallion's Philip Shelton as well as Reeves, Fowler and Weston, and at least six additional Medallion members on hand for the win. Ironically enough, it wasn't Taylor Made's only connections to succeed at Ascot this week. Other Taylor Made customers, Black Ridge Stable, won the Queen Mary with Crimson Advocate (Nyquist).

“We were going crazy for her when they won the other day, and then in my superstitious mind, I was like, `Well, there's no way two horses are going to win at Ascot with Taylor Made connections.' For it to happen twice, it was beyond words.”

In addition to creating and nurturing new owners, Medallion also has a goal of showing off the sport at its best.

“In Medallion, we want to educate the people who come into the sport about all aspects of racing, including international racing, and to showcase to them how well these horses are taken care of. So many people look at our sport and say negative comments like, `These horses are just pawns in this big game,' but they're really not. We partner with people and we employ trainers that really care about these horses. And we try to shed light on that anytime we can so that our partners can see these horses are really loved, they're cared about, and we cheer for them and love them whether they win or lose.”

And even if he wasn't on hand, Taylor said he'd celebrate the win in typical Ascot-and typical Taylor–fashion. “I will drink some champagne,” he said. “But I'll wait until 5:00 tonight.”

Sunday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Racing From Belmont, Woodbine, Monmouth

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Sunday featuring stakes from Belmont Park and Woodbine as well as action from Monmouth Park.

The Cross Country Pick 5 requires bettors to pick the winner of five select races from tracks across the country. The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country with each week featuring a mandatory payout of the net pool. The Cross Country Pick 5, boasting a low 15 percent takeout, offers sequences with races from Belmont Park and partner tracks across the country.

The sequence kicks off in Race 8 at Monmouth Park at 3:56 p.m. Eastern with a one mile and seventy yard allowance optional claiming event for 3-year-olds and up led by the Chad Brown-trained Systemic Change.

The 4-year-old Ghostzapper gelding, who won a pair of two-turn routes in the spring at Aqueduct Racetrack, will be challenged by Kobe B, a five-time winner trained by Michael Pino and King of Hollywood, who enters on a two-race win streak for conditioner Gregg Sacco.

Action switches to Belmont for the second leg, a seven-furlong Widener turf allowance [Race 7, 4:16 p.m.] for New York-bred fillies and mares topped by stakes-winner Moonage Daydream.

Trained by Jorge Abreu, the Candy Ride sophomore captured the Stewart Manor in November at the Big A and made her seasonal debut with a pacesetting sixth in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride in March at Gulfstream Park when defeated just three lengths. Moonage Daydream was most recently a closing second in a state-bred optional claiming sprint. Prime contenders include the consistent New Ginya, who sports a ledger of 9-2-4-2 for conditioner Christophe Clement and multiple stakes-winner Dream Central for trainer Gary Sciacca.

The middle leg returns to Monmouth [Race 9, 4:24 p.m.] for a contentious 1 1/16-mile starter handicap on turf for 3-year-olds and up in which Wicked Finn will look to double up for trainer Blake Kelly.

The 5-year-old Wicked Strong dark bay closed to win by a neck last out on May 24 at Delaware Park, besting returning rivals Royal Luck and Bode's Maker. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher sends out Six Minus, a three-time winner cutting back in distance from a trio of starts at 12 furlongs; while Initforthelove, who saw a three-race win streak end last out, will look to return to winning form for trainer Gerald Bennett.

The penultimate leg will see a field of nine sophomore fillies sprint 6 1/2-furlongs over the turf in the $100,000 Alywow [Race 7, 4:28 p.m.] at Woodbine with the Brown-trained Up and Down listed as the 5-2 morning line favorite.

The Creative Cause grey, who graduated in April at Keeneland ahead of a troubled fourth last out in the Hilltop, will be piloted by Kazushi Kimura – the 2019 Eclipse Award-winning Apprentice Jockey, who has won the last two Sovereign Awards as Canada's Outstanding Jockey. Steep opposition will be provided by Ryder Ryder Ryder, who makes her turf debut for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse out of a seven-length score in the Ruling Angel on May 20 over the Woodbine Tapeta. The Quality Road dark bay should take to the turf being a full-sister to 2014 Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf-winner Hootenanny.

The sequence concludes at Belmont with the $125,000 Dancin Renee [Race 8, 4:48 p.m.], a six-furlong sprint for older New York-bred fillies and mares featuring the graded-stakes placed Rossa Veloce.

Trained by Rob Aras, the 5-year-old Girolamo mare won the open-company Correction in March at Aqueduct and enters from a pacesetting third in the Grade 3 Vagrancy on May 14 here. A strong field includes the multiple graded-stakes placed Sterling Silver for trainer Tom Albertrani as well as the graded-stakes placed Betsy Blue, a 10-time winner from the barn of Linda Rice. Grannys Connection, in the midst of a four-race win streak, will make her stakes debut for trainer Tom Morley.

Weekend Lineup Presented By Monmouth Park: Derby Runner-Up Star Of The Show In Ohio

The final day of the highly-anticipated five-day Royal Ascot meeting is scheduled for this Saturday, highlighting this weekend's racing calendar. A truly international field will line up for the day's feature race, the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, led by Hong Kong's top sprinter Wellington.

Stateside, the weekend's top event is likely the Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby, featuring the brave Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil's. He'll have a new jockey in the irons, Gerardo Corrales, following the injury to regular rider Jareth Loveberry, but the Larry Rivelli trainee is easily the 8-5 morning line favorite in the field of eight 3-year-olds.

The G3 Chicago Stakes is the other graded race on offer this weekend, to be held at Ellis Park. Dual Grade 1 winner Matareya is the favorite in the field of six, though she'll face a challenge from another Grade 1 winner in Society.

Other stakes action on Saturday includes: Wild Applause at Belmont, Carry Back at Gulfstream, Bertrando at Los Alamitos, four stakes at Lone Star, Goldwood at Monmouth, three undercard stakes at Thistledown, and the Ballade at Woodbine.

A pair of Breeders' Cup Challenge races offer “Win and You're In” berths on Sunday. The winner of the Takarazuka Kinen (G1) at 1 3/8 miles on turf, led by the world's top-ranked racehorse Equinox, at Hanshin Racecourse in Japan, will gain a free berth into the $4 million Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1). The winner of the Gran Premio Pamplona (G1) at 1 1 /4 miles on turf, for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up at Hipodromo De Monterrico in Lima, Peru, will earn an automatic starting position into the $2 million Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1), which will be run at 1 ¼ miles.

Saturday

10:40 a.m. – Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot

A glittering international field with contenders from Australia, Hong Kong, France and Ireland has assembled for the first running of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, renamed in memory of the late monarch.

Englishman Richard Gibson has made the journey from Hong Kong with one of their top sprinters Wellington, twice a winner of the Group 1 Chairman's Sprint and, last December, winner of the Longines Hong Kong Sprint under Ryan Moore on the turf at Sha Tin.

Ralph Beckett trainee Kinross is another class performer, who has travelled the world and was unlucky not to win the Breeders' Cup Mile when third behind Modern Games after being put on the back foot by early scrimmaging.

Mauricio Delcher Sanchez won the Jubilee with Equiano in 2008 when he was champion trainer in Spain, but now based in Chantilly, he makes the shorter trip with Coeur de Pierre, third to The Platinum Queen in the Prix de l'Abbaye at ParisLongchamp last October.

Many of last year's field are back for another crack with Australian sprinter Artorius having got closest to the Godolphin pair Naval Crown and Creative Force in dead-heating for third under Jamie Spencer.

Highfield Princess and Cannonball, second and last respectively in Tuesday's King's Stand, also feature in the field of 16.

QEII Jubilee Entries

4:55 p.m. – Grade 3 Chicago Stakes at Ellis Park

Godolphin's Derby City Distaff (G1) winner Matareya headlines a field of six fillies and mares entered for the $225,000 Chicago Stakes.

Matareya, a 4-year-old daughter of Pioneerof the Nile trained by Brad Cox, is a two-time Grade 1-winning sprinter. Prior to her top-level victory in the Derby City Distaff, Matareya won last year's Acorn Stakes (G1) as a 3-year-old. Matareya has one prior start at Ellis Park when she broke her maiden as a 2-year-old by 4½ lengths. Jockey Flavien Prat, who has been aboard Matareya for her last six starts, will be in the saddle from post No. 2.

Another Grade 1 winner that entered the Chicago Stakes is Peter Blum Thoroughbreds' Society. Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Society won last year's Cotillion Stakes (G1) at Parx. In her most recent start, the 4-year-old Gun Runner filly faded to ninth in the 1 1/16-mile La Troienne Stakes (G1) but will cut back in distance in the Chicago Stakes with Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle from post 5.

Chicago Entries

6:20 p.m. – Grade 3 Ohio Derby at Thistledown

Trainer Larry Rivelli has confidence in his Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil's ahead of this Saturday's $500,000 Ohio Derby, despite the late rider change. The 3-year-old son of Hard Spun drew post four in the field of eight runners entered for the 1 1/8-mile contest.

Second choice at 3-1 goes to the Brad Cox-trained Bishops Bay, last-out second in the G3 Peter Pan to eventual Belmont Stakes winner Arcangelo. Florent Geroux ships in to ride the son of Uncle Mo.

Scratched from the Kentucky Derby after his trainer Saffie Joseph sent out a pair of unexplained sudden deaths earlier in the week, Lord Miles has not raced since winning the G2 Wood Memorial on April 8, 2023. The son of Curlin is the third choice on the morning line at 7-2 in the Ohio Derby, and will be piloted by Edgard Zayas.

Third in the G3 Peter Pan, the Doug O'Neill-trained Henry Q is the fourth choice at 5-1 on the morning line for Saturday's Ohio Derby. He will be ridden by Kendrick Carmouche.
