Favorite Two Phil’s Shines In Easy Ohio Derby Victory

Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up Two Phil's got a perfect stalking trip from stand-in jockey Gerardo Corrales and easily won the $500,000 Ohio Derby (G3), the Buckeye State's richest Thoroughbred race, Saturday at Thistledown Racino.

Corrales, substituting for injured regular rider Jareth Loveberry, positioned 3-5 favorite Two Phil's just behind the early pace set by Henry Q, who was pressured by Bishop Bay through six furlongs, and had the Hard Spun colt ready to roll around the far turn as Bishops Bay edged to the lead. In the matter of a few strides, Two Phil's easily took charge from Bishops Bay nearing the home turn and opened a two-length lead in early stretch before drawing away to a 5¾-length triumph.

Trained by Larry Rivelli, Two Phil's returned $3.60 after covering 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.60 on a fast track.

Bishops Bay, the 7-5 second choice in the eight-horse field, hung on for second and was well clear of third-place finisher Hayes Strike, who was another seven lengths back. Lord Miles, who was scratched from the Kentucky Derby, finished fourth while making his first start since taking the Wood Memorial (G2).

Henry Q, Timesatappin, Agnello's Dream, and Last Cookie completed the order of finish.

Two Phil's, who entered off a gallant second, one length behind Mage, in the Kentucky Derby May 6, added a third graded win to his record following his victory last fall at Churchill Downs in the Street Sense Stakes (G3) and the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) March 25 at Turfway Park in his start prior to the Louisville classic. Overall, he improved his record to 4-2-1 from nine career starts. The $300,000 winner's share of the Ohio Derby purse increased his lifetime earnings to $1,283,450.

Two Phil's, who is out of the General Quarters mare Mia Torri, was bred in Kentucky by co-owner Phil Sagan, who campaigns him with Patricia's Hope LLC and Madaket Stables LLC.

Two Phil’s ‘Rocks’ Cleveland In Ohio Derby Romp

On the shores of Lake Erie in Cleveland sits the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and about 15 miles away Saturday afternoon in southeast suburban North Randall, Patricia's Hope, Phillip Sagan and Madaket Stables' Two Phil's (Hard Spun) turned in a heavy metal performance of his own, treating seven rivals to a thorough 'beat'-ing in the $500,000 GIII Ohio Derby. 'TDN Rising Star' Bishops Bay (Uncle Mo), narrowly defeated by next-out GI Belmont S. hero Arcangelo (Arrogate) in the GIII Peter Pan S. last month, was no match for the winner in second, while longshot Hayes Strike (Connect) ran on to be third.

With Jareth Loveberry forced to the sidelines by a most untimely injury, it was Gerardo Corrales–in the irons for Two Phil's's debut at Churchill Downs almost exactly one year ago Saturday–who got the call-up from trainer Larry Rivelli, and despite never being on a stage quite this big, executed a tactically perfect ride on the chestnut.

Away in good order from stall four in the eight-horse field, Two Phil's raced prominently as the rail-drawn Henry Q (Blame) was ridden aggressively by Kendrick Carmouche and led into the first turn while making the running in the three or four path. Bishops Bay raced closest in attendance, and for a stride or two, it appeared that Corrales was going to dive down to the inside before thinking better of it and settling Two Phil's on the back of Bishops Bay. It was arguably the winning move, better than six furlongs from home.

Content to bide his time from third down the backstretch as Henry Q took them through four furlongs in a sensible :47.42, Two Phil's was asked to improve at the three-eighths peg and quickly raced up to his chief market rival, as Henry Q capitulated readily. In front without having been unduly asked by Corrales with a bit less than a quarter-mile to travel, Two Phil's kicked for home and raced away to a comfortable victory. Bishops Bay was switched out at the midstretch marker by Florent Geroux, but it was far too little and far too late.

Runaway winner of last year's GIII Street Sense S., Two Phil's covered himself in glory on the New Orleans road to the Triple Crown, finishing runner-up in the GIII Lecomte S. in January and third to Angel of Empire (Classic Empire) in the GII Risen Star S. the following month. Connections then selected a path of lesser resistance, swerving the GII Louisiana Derby in favor of the GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks Mar. 25, and he duly obliged with a 5 1/4-length thrashing of the classy Major Dude (Bolt d'Oro). Having earned his fair share of admirers, Two Phil's sat relatively close to the wicked early pace in the May 6 GI Kentucky Derby at odds shy of 10-1, went for an early move to lead into the stretch and fought on bravely to be beaten a length into second by Mage (Good Mgic), with Angel of Empire another half-length back in third.

The obligatory discussion of a Preakness S. appearance ensued, always a polarizing debate, but connections stuck to their guns and landed on the Ohio Derby as a springboard to the summer's seven-figure 3-year-old races in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Following his performance in front of an enthusiastic crowd Saturday, it is crystal clear that Two Phil's is hitting all the right notes with plenty to play for in the second half of the year.

Pedigree Notes:

Two Phil's is one of 97 worldwide black-type winners (47 graded/group winners) for Darley America's outstanding Hard Spun and is one of three stakes winner and the only one at the graded level for his now Turkish-based broodmare sire General Quarters.

Breeder and part-owner Phillip Sagan raced Mia Torri to four wins from 10 starts including victories in the Sunshine Millions Distaff and Sugar Maple S. while placing in the GIII Charles Town Oaks and the GIII Bed o' Roses S. A half-sister to a pair of stakes performers, the 10-year-old Mia Torri has a 2-year-old colt by Omaha Beach and a yearling colt by McKinzie. There is no reported foal as yet for 2023, but she was bred to Omaha Beach last season.

Shockwave: Study Shows Radial Treatment Increases Blood Flow, Decreases Muscle Pain

Veterinarians treating horses with musculoskeletal injuries may prescribe radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy, which uses a mechanical wave generated outside the body to increase the skin's surface temperature over a target muscle.

Focused shockwave therapy, another common type of treatment, uses a focused wave on a specific area to achieve maximum pressure. This type of shockwave treatment can penetrate tissue to twice the depth of radial waves – nearly 4 inches compared with 1 to 1.3 inches in human tissue. Though not nearly as strong, radial shockwave therapy does assist with pain reduction and a reduction in the muscle tone of treated tissue.

Researchers in Poland, led by Dr. Karolina Śniegucka, sought to assess how shockwave therapy affected the surface temperature of the skin covering the longissimus dorsi muscle, which runs under where the saddle sits. The scientists used 24 Thoroughbreds that were between two and three years old. Each was healthy and had similar fitness levels; all were being trained for flat racing.

The horses were divided into two groups; half received the radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy treatment, which lasted about 3.5 minutes, and the other half received a “treatment” of similar length where the probe was not activated.

The horses were examined thermographically and palpated before treatment and just after treatment to determine whether the skin surface temperature over the muscle changed or whether the muscle tone was affected. An additional thermographic exam was done 10 minutes after the treatment.

The scientists found that both groups had an increase in skin surface temperature immediately following the treatment, though the horses receiving treatment had significantly higher skin surface temperature. Both groups also saw a decrease in skin surface temperature to below the initial value 10 minutes after the treatment concluded.

The treatment group also had average muscle tone before the treatment that was significantly higher than just after the shockwave procedure.

[Story Continues Below]

The scientists concluded that radial shockwave therapy increases the temperature of the skin surface, indicating an increase in blood flow. It also contributed to a significant reduction in pain sensation and muscle tone in the treated area.

More work is needed to determine the optimum number of shockwave treatments to positively influence back issues long-term, they say.

Society Eclipses Ellis Park Track Record With Chicago Stakes Blitz

Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds' homebred Society etched herself in the Ellis Park history books Saturday by not only dominating the 33rd running of the $225,000 Chicago Stakes (G3) but also by setting a seven-furlong track record in 1:20.54 at the Henderson, Ky. oval.

Society is under the care of Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen and was ridden to victory by Tyler Gaffalione. The 4-year-old daughter of Gun Runner was geared down late and completed seven furlongs .15 seconds faster than previous track record of 1:20.69 set by Privet Moon in an allowance-optional claiming event on July 9, 2021.

Gaffalione positioned Society on the lead just to the inside of front-running Drifaros as the duo blasted through an opening quarter-mile in :22.21. Heavy favorite Matareya sat third in the early stages about three lengths behind the dueling leaders. Around the far turn, Society began to step clear of Drifaros and powerfully opened up down the lane for a 10¾-length victory.

“She was super impressive today,” Gaffalione said. “It's a credit to Steve (Asmussen) and his team for having her ready to run a huge race. It was pretty cool setting the track record with her today.”

Society returned $6.38 for her victory. Drifaros, ridden by Martin Garcia, held second, 1 1/4 length to the good of favorite Matareya.

Society, who is out of the Tapit mare Etiquette, boasts a lifetime mark of 6-0-1 from 10 starts and purse earnings of $1,334,535.
