Gulfstream Park: Mandatory Rainbow 6 Payout Set For Friday’s Program

A mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 pool is scheduled for Friday's program at Gulfstream Park, where the popular multi-race wager went unsolved Sunday for the seventh racing day following a jackpot hit for $263,655 June 4.

The carryover jackpot pool stands a $149,053.69 heading into Friday's card.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 3-8, featuring an optional claiming allowance with a likely favorite that may well be a popular “single” in Race 5. Terri Pompay-trained Smart Striker will make his first start since finishing second in the Not Surprising Stakes in Friday's mile-and-70-yard race on Tapeta for Florida-bred 3-year-olds.

Trainer Peter Walder, who notched his 999th career victory with Royal Kitten in Sunday's Race 6, will have his next shot at the 1,000-win milestone with two entries in Friday's Race 7, a one-mile allowance-optional claiming race for 3-year-olds and up on the main track. Slim Slow Slider, a winner two starts back in a one-mile allowance-optional claiming event, and Big Daddy Dave, who finished second at one mile in his most recent start, will represent Walder in an eight-horse field.

On mandatory payout days, the entire Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the wager's six-race sequence. The carryover jackpot is usually only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winner, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Rodriguez Pilots Four Winners On Laurel’s Sunday Card, Moves To Top Of Standings

Journeyman Jaime Rodriguez continued his sizzling summer by riding four winners Sunday at Laurel Park to hit the century mark and take over the lead in the summer meet jockey standings.

Rodriguez, 32, entered Sunday tied with Sheldon Russell and five-pound apprentice Axel Concepcion with eight wins apiece, then took the opener with 4-year-old gelding Vocalize ($10.20), trained by Horacio DePaz.

Russell won Race 2 Sunday aboard Kellan ($3), a 2-year-old filly making her second career start, before Rodriguez reeled off wins on Afandi ($6.60) in Race 5, Stern Chaser ($3.80) in Race 7 and Biogenic Babe ($4.80) in Race 8, the latter trained by Jamie Ness.

“I thought Jamie's filly ran really good,” Rodriguez said. “Everything was running good today and I'm very happy. Everything worked out right for me. It's a good day.”

It was the third multi-win performance for Rodriguez through the first nine days of the summer meet, which began June 9. He registered a hat trick June 23 and rode two winners June 18.

Laurel's winter meet riding champion, Rodriguez leads Russell, 12-9, in the standings. Rodriguez is also the leading rider at Delaware Park, 15-11, over Daniel Centeno. Rodriguez has topped the Delaware meet each of the past two years.

A native of Puerto Rico, Rodriguez has enjoyed a memorable first half of 2023. In addition to his first riding title in Maryland, he tied a Laurel Park record by riding seven winners on a single card March 17. Rodriguez also notched his 2,000th career victory June 15 at Delaware aboard Strugar, another Ness trainee.

Rodriguez now has 100 wins from 445 starters this year with $3.6 million in purse earnings.

Report: Two Phil’s Exits Ohio Derby Victory With Ankle Injury

Two Phil's, who scored his third career graded stakes win on Saturday with an overpowering 5 3/4-length victory in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby at JACK Thistledown, came out of the race with an injury to his right front ankle that likely will need surgery, Marcus Hersh reported on Sunday in Daily Racing Form.

The Kentucky Derby runner-up was bet down to 3-5 favoritism in the Ohio Derby and justified those odds, tracking the early speed under Gerardo Corrales, taking command into the stretch and drawing away from 7-5 second choice Bishops Bay. The latter was coming off a narrow defeat to Arcangelo in the G3 Peter Pan at Belmont Park, a result that looked even better after Arcangelo won the final leg of the Triple Crown, the G1 Belmont Stakes on June 10.

Two Phil's earned a 105 Beyer Speed Figure in the Ohio Derby, equalling the figure he received when second, beaten a length by Mage, in the G1 Kentucky Derby.

On Sunday morning, however, Rivelli told Daily Racing Form that a problem was detected in the Hard Spun 3-year-old colt's right front ankle. He was vanned the 325 miles from Thistledown to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., where he will be evaluated by Dr. Larry Bramlage.

“It probably puts him out for the rest of the year,” Rivelli was quoted as saying, though he admitted not knowing the extent of the injury.

Produced from the General Quarters mare, Mia Torri, Two Phil's was bred in Kentucky by Phillip Sagan and is owned by  Sagan in partnership with Patricia's Hope LLC and Madaket Stables LLC. Mia Torri was a two-time stakes winner and second in a pair of G3 stakes.

Rivelli indicated to Daily Racing Form that there has been interest from stallion farms and that it is possible Two Phil's – whose earlier G3 victories included the Street Sense at Churchill Downs and Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park – may not race again.

“He doesn't owe us anything,” Rivelli told Daily Racing Form. “In my experience, they aren't usually the same after something like this.”

Act A Fool Scores For Rivelli In Hawthorne Derby In Stakes Bow

Following some much-needed rain in the Chicagoland area, the $100,000 Hawthorne Derby was contested at 1 1/8 miles over a yielding turf course on a blustery Sunday card. The field of six was led by 6-5 favorite Out of Deductions for trainer Chris Block. A close second choice at 8-5 was Really Good for Mike Maker.

When the gates sprung it was the Larry Rivelli trainee Act a Fool who quickly grabbed the lead under jockey Alexis Centeno and opened up a 4½-length lead through the opening quarter in :24.32. With longshots Wolf Hunter and Russian Hammer chasing on the backstretch, Act a Fool cruised through a half in :49.80.

Into the far turn, the field started to bunch up as favored Out of Deductions drew within a couple of lengths of Act a Fool through six furlongs in 1:13.92. Centeno asked Act a Fool for his best at the top of the lane and the Oscar Performance colt willingly responded, opening up again on the lead and cruising to a 4½-length score in 1:52.62.

Really Good rallied from the back of the pack to finish second while Out of Deductions held third followed by Wolf Hunter, Russian Hammer, and Money Agent to complete the order of finish.

Owned by Richard Ravin and Patricia's Hope LLC of Vince Foglia, Act a Fool earned $60,000 for the victory and improved his career line to 4-0-0 from five career starts–he did not start as a 2-year-old–and $116,548 in earnings. A $100,000 purchase at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where Paramount Sales consigned him, he was bred in Kentucky by Brook T. Smith Investments LLC. His dam is the Quality Road mare Post Script.

Act a Fool is the second Derby winner this weekend for Rivelli, following Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up Two Phil's triumph in the Ohio Derby (G3) Saturday at Thistledown Racino.

Act A Fool paid $8.40 for the win as the 3-1 third wagering choice.

Centeno was confident that Act a Fool would get the job done Sunday.

“He's bred for anything,” Centeno said. “Obviously, we knew he could run well on dirt. But I knew he was going to run big today. We just needed to be patient. He never ran this far, but I knew we had plenty left when we turned into the stretch. He did everything himself. He was very comfortable. As soon as we came out of the turn and asked him to go, he did. He was running easy.”
