Louisiana Commission Selects HISA-Approved Industrial Laboratories To Serve As Interim State Chemist

The Louisiana State Racing Commission (“LSRC”) has selected Industrial Laboratories of Denver, Colorado (“Industrial”) to serve as its state chemist, on an interim basis, beginning July 1, 2023. Industrial will conduct Post-Race, Out-of-Competition, Vets' List, and TCO2 testing in the State of Louisiana. A longer contract for LSRC's state chemist will be put out on public bid in compliance with state public bid laws.

Industrial is an independent, third-party, private testing laboratory. The company was founded in 1945, began drug-testing for performance sports animals in 1953, and currently conducts drug-testing for various states, racing jurisdictions, fairs, and other sporting events. Industrial specializes in analytical chemistry and microbiology and is accredited to ISO 17025, the pinnacle in third-party laboratory accreditation. Industrial is accredited by the Racing Medication & Testing Consortium (“RMTC”). Industrial provides state-of-the-art technical testing services coupled with outstanding quality to protect the interests of equine athletes, horsemen, and the wagering public.

Industrial is one of six laboratories approved by the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (“HIWU”), which oversees the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's (“HISA”) Anti- Doping and Medication Control (“ADMC”) Program.

The LSRC would like to thank LSU's School of Veterinary Medicine for its loyal service and being a trusted partner for the last 36 years. The testing conducted by the Equine Medication Surveillance Laboratory, under the leadership originally of Dr. Steven Barker and then Dr. Levent Dirikolu, has played a pivotal role in the LSRC fulfilling its commitment to the public to ensure integrity and safety in the sport of horseracing in Louisiana. The LSRC and LSU have mutually and amicably agreed not to renew their contract for equine drug-testing.

Harrington Readies Two-Pronged Attack For Wednesday’s Naas Oaks Trial

Jessica Harrington is preparing a two-pronged attack on Wednesday's Al Shira'aa Racing Irish EBF Naas Oaks Trial, a race the trainer won in 2019 with Trethias (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Fresh from sending out Villanova Queen (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) to win at Royal Ascot, Harrington will rely on the progressive Snowcapped (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) and Small Oasis (GB) (Sioux Nation).

Ireland's champion jockey Colin Keane was in the saddle aboard Villanova Queen at Ascot and Harrington has snapped up his services for Snowcapped while Ben Coen rides Small Oasis.

“Things just didn't really work out for Small Oasis in France earlier this month when she ran in a listed race at Longchamp but she has come back from that in good form and we are looking forward to stepping her up in trip,” Kate Harrington, assistant trainer to her mother, Jessica, said on Monday.

“Snowcapped has been a revelation this season and ran a cracking race on Guineas weekend at the Curragh. She is going from a handicap up to listed company now but hopefully she can keep progressing.”

She added, “We didn't have Small Oasis last season but they are two fillies going in the right direction and we are looking forward to running them on Wednesday. Consideration might have to be given to looking at an Irish Oaks with them if they run well on Wednesday so we'll wait and see what happens. The ground should be perfect for both of them.”

Hartack Derby Trophies Top Sports Memorabilia Auction

A group of five Lemon & Son brand sterling silver engraved Kentucky Derby trophies won from 1957 to 1969 by legendary jockey Bill Hartack, was the top offering at Julien's Auctions' three-day Sports Legends auction held over the weekend online and live in the company's auction house in Beverly Hills. The trophies sold for $317,000.

Hartack's five wins (aboard Iron Liege in 1957; Venetian Way in 1960; Decidedly in 1962; Northern Dancer in 1964; and Majestic Prince in 1969) tie him with Eddie Arcaro for most Derby victories by a jockey.

The weekend's auction also featured nearly nine hundred game winning jerseys, medals, memorabilia, and collectibles from sports stars such as Michael Jordan, Pele, Kobe Bryant, Diego Maradona, Babe Ruth, and Rafael Nadal.

Consistent Delaware Oaks Favorite Miracle ‘Should Like The Track’

Siena Farm and WinStar Farm's Miracle tops a field of ten entered in the $300,000, Grade 3 Delaware Oaks this Saturday at Delaware Park. The 1 1/16-mile affair has been carded as the eighth race with an approximate post time of 4:00pm.

The New York-bred daughter of Mendelssohn travels well: from her seven career starts, she has only been out of the money once while racing over five different tracks.  She has a win, four seconds and a third with earnings of $229,675.

“She is training very well coming into the race,” said trainer Todd Pletcher, who won the Delaware Oaks in 2006 with Adieu. “She is very consistent and she should like the track.”

Miracle has made three starts in 2023. On Feb. 18, she ran second in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra at the Fair Grounds, then followed with a fifth in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks on April 1. In her most recent out, she ran second in the New York state-bred Bouwerie Stakes at Belmont Park on May 29. Miracle will be ridden by Trevor McCarthy, who won the Delaware Oaks in 2014 with Fortune Pearl.

The Elkstone Group's Cover the Spread and Haymarket Farm's Cats Inthe Timber will be representing the home team. Both are conditioned by Brittany Russell, the current leading trainer at Delaware Park with a record of nine wins, eight seconds, and six thirds from 29 starts.

The Delaware Oaks will be the first stakes test for Cover the Spread who has a career record of two wins and two thirds from four starts.  In her most recent, the Maryland-bred daughter of Will Take Charge won a 1 1/16-mile allowance at Pimlico on May 14. The homebred broke her maiden in her career debut going a mile at Laurel Park on November 24.

“We ran her the one turn mile at Laurel three times mostly because that was the only opportunity offered, but we had been dying to run her two turns,” said trainer Brittany Russell. “When we took her to Pimlico, she handled the two turns exactly the way we thought she would. She ran a really big race that day. She is a really good work horse and training filly. It might be a question for her to step up and run against a little better competition, but she has trained and raced so well, it justifies taking this shot.”

Cats Inthe Timber broke her maiden in her second career effort going six furlongs at Delaware Park. In her most recent effort, the Kentucky-bred daughter of Honor Code finished sixth in Grade 2 Black Eyed Susan at Pimlico on May 19. Previously, she won the $125,000 Weber City Miss Stakes at Laurel Park on April 15. Cats Inthe Timber has a career record of three wins, a second, and a third from seven starts with earnings of $155,400.

“Cats Inthe Timber just keeps plugging along and she does what we ask her to do,” said trainer Brittany Russell. “She is solid. We may have thrown her to the wolves last time, but to be fair, she ran hard against a real tough bunch. I am very happy with her. She is doing extremely well. We have had this race in the back of our minds for a while because she trains and started her career at Delaware Park, so we have had this race in mind. I think we are going to take a swing and see what happens in the Oaks.”
