Belmont Notes: National Treasure Slated To Breeze Monday

Preakness (G1) winner National Treasure is scheduled to breeze Monday in preparation for the $1.5-million Belmont Stakes (G1) June 10.

The Quality Road sophomore added blinkers and made all the running in the 1 3/16-mile Preakness on May 20 with Hall of Famer John Velazquez up, outdueling Blazing Sevens for a narrow head score with Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mage settling for third.

Baffert said he is hopeful that National Treasure will appreciate the added ground in the 1 1/2-mile “Test of the Champion.”

“You never know until they do it,” Baffert said. “He handled the Preakness distance and it wasn't a problem for him. We're all in the same boat. None of them probably want to go that far, but if they don't go too fast, they can do it.

“I just want him to show up like he did at Pimlico,” added Baffert. “He's never really run a bad race. All his races have been competitive. He's a pretty consistent horse. He's happy and he'll breeze tomorrow and hopefully everything goes well.”

Baffert, who previously won the Belmont Stakes with Point Given [2001] and Triple Crown winners American Pharoah [2015] and Justify [2018], will be in attendance Saturday for the final leg of the Triple Crown.

SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Robert Masterson, Stonestreet Stables, Jay A. Schoenfarber, Waves Edge Capital and Catherine Donovan's National Treasure graduated at first asking in September at Del Mar and hit the board in a trio of stakes in the American Pharoah (G1) [second] in October at Santa Anita, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) [third] in November at Keeneland and the Sham (G3) [third] in January at Santa Anita. He finished fourth in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) in April ahead of his Preakness coup.

Zedan Racing Stables' graded stakes-placed Arabian Lion rolled to a front-running four-length score last out under Velazquez in the 1 1/16-mile Sir Barton on the Preakness undercard.

While initially under consideration for the Belmont Stakes, Baffert decided to point the Justify chestnut to the $400,000 Woody Stephens (G1), a seven-furlong sprint for sophomores.

“On the turnback, sometimes they run well. We'll send him back to two turns again after that,” Baffert said.

Arabian Lion, who boasts a ledger of 6-2-2-0 for purse earnings of $217,600, entered the Sir Barton from a pacesetting runner-up effort to First Mission in the Grade 3 Lexington (G3) on April 15 at Keeneland.

Valdivia Reaches 2000-Win Career Milestone At Santa Anita

Jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. reached a career milestone on Saturday when winning his 2,000th race aboard Mitico for owner- trainer Paula Capestro.

Valdivia and Mitico were dispatched as the 2-1 second choice in Saturday's sixth race, a six-furlong dirt sprint for $20,000 claimers who have not won three races. Valdivia and Mitico, a 4-year-old Dailed In ridgling. pressed the pace in third before surging to the front at the top of the stretch and kicking clear to win by 2¼ lengths. Mitico returned $6.80 for the win.

Valdivia, a 49-year-old native of Peru, was beaming in the winner's circle after the race.

“I'm on cloud nine,” Valdivia said before thanking his wife and family. He also noted his long relationship with Capestro, who he has ridden for since an apprentice.

“She has been riding me since I had the bug. I'm so happy she made it out here and I'm wearing her colors,” Valdivia said.

Valdivia won his first race at Belmont Park on July 10, 1994. In the second half of the last decade, Valdivia was the dominant force at Arlington Park near Chicago. He won four straight riding titles there from 2016-19.

The most notable of Valdivia's 2,000 wins were the 2001 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) aboard Santa Anita-based Val Royal for trainer Julio Canani and the 2011 Belmont Stakes (G1) with Ruler On Ice for trainer Kelly Breen.

Following his run of success at Arlington Park, Valdivia began riding regularly again at Santa Anita during the 2019-2020 winter-spring season. His win Saturday was his third from 23 mounts at the Hollywood Meet.

“Belmont Park is where I started riding and I had some of my bigger wins, but I have always considered Santa Anita home,” said Valdivia, who is the nephew of recently inducted Hall of Fame jockey Fernando Toro. “I don't think there's a more majestic racetrack in the world than this. It is extra special.”

Dubai Mile Likely for Grand Prix de Paris

Ahmad Al Shaih's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Dubai Mile (Ire) (Roaring Lion) will be pointed to the G1 Grand Prix de Paris with the possibility of a run at Royal Ascot in between, trainer Charlie Johnson said. The colt finished ninth in the G1 Betfred Derby on Saturday and was fifth in the Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in his three-year-old debut last month.

Dubai Mile holds engagements in the G2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot on Jun 23 and also the G1 Irish Derby at The Curragh on July 2. However, Johnston is keen to head to ParisLongchamp for the Grand Prix de Paris, over the same 1 1/2-mile trip on July 14.

“We will see about Ascot and I've always thought the Grand Prix de Paris was a race that would really suit him,” Johnston said. “I'd like to have that as part of his plans. Whether or not he goes to Ascot in between, we'll see.

“If he did everything, it would be three weeks and three weeks–it is six weeks until Paris.”
