Arqana €2M Sensation Snags TDN Rising Star In Haydock Debut

Godolphin's Ancient Wisdom (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}–Golden Valentine {Fr}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) turned heads when selling for €2-million at last year's Arqana August fixture, and he was back in the limelight with a highly polished debut display in Friday's GPW Recruitment Carl Foster Memorial EBF Novice S. at Haydock. The well-supported 6-5 favourite hit the line powerfully and finished clear of Under The Sun (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), attaining 'TDN Rising Star' status in the seven-furlong heat with an impressive five-length triumph.

Ancient Wisdom settled into a comfortable rhythm behind the leaders in fourth after a sharp exit from an outer stall. Bounding forward in the straight to launch his bid on the bridle passing the quarter-mile marker, he quickened in style to settle the contest in a matter of strides approaching the final furlong and surged clear in taking fashion to rout his rivals by daylight. The April-foaled bay took several furlongs to gear down and was halfway along the backstraight before doing so.

Ancient Wisdom, half to a yearling colt by Lope De Vega (Ire), is the third of four reported foals and second scorer produced by G3 Prix Minerve winner Golden Valentine (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}), herself one of seven stakes performers out of G3 Prix Cleopatre victrix Gold Round (Ire) (Caerleon). Golden Valentine's siblings include her G3 Prix du Lys-winning full-brother Goldwaki (Ger), GIII Robert J Frankel S. victrix and GI Rodeo Drive S. runner-up Luck (Kitten's Joy) and the dam of G3 Prix Vanteaux winner and GI E P Taylor S. third Platane (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}). Gold Round, in turn, is a half-sister to storied multiple champion and three-time GI Breeders' Cup Mile heroine Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), G1 Prix Vermeille victrix Galikova (Fr) (Galileo {Ire}) and multiple Group 1-placed sire Anodin (Ire) (Anabaa).

Grade 1 Winner Blue Stripe Confirmed Pregnant To Flightline

Blue Stripe, a winner at the highest level in the U.S. and her native Argentina, was confirmed pregnant to 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

Unraced since finishing a narrow second to Malathaat in the Breeders' Cup Distaff last November at Keeneland, Blue Stripe is bound for Japan after selling to Grand Farm, through agent Narvick International, for $4 million at last year's Fasig-Tipton November sale.

Blue Stripe, a 6-year-old daughter of Equal Stripes, won six of 11 starts during her on-track career for earnings of $801,882, racing for owner Pozo de Luna. She was trained during her time racing in the U.S. by Marcelo Polanco.

She started racing in Argentina, with wins in the Group 1 Criadores and the G2 Arturo R. y Arturo Bullrich in 2021, before shipping stateside to test that year's Breeders' Cup Distaff, where she finished seventh. Blue Stripe remained in the U.S. the following season, where she won the G1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes and the G2 Santa Margarita Stakes, both in Southern California, before her runner-up effort in last year's Distaff.

Flightline is in the midst of his debut season at Lane's End in Versailles, Ky., for an advertised fee of $200,000.

The 5-year-old son of Tapit went unbeaten in six career starts, culminating in an 8 1/4-length triumph in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic.

California Outbreak Of Vesicular Stomatitis Has 57 Premises In Four Counties Under Quarantine

An ongoing outbreak of vesicular stomatitis continues to grow in Southern California, with the most recent update from federal veterinary services officials tallying a total of 57 premises under quarantine across four counties.

Vesicular stomatitis is a viral disease that impacts multiple breeds of livestock and is transmitted mostly by biting insects. It's endemic in Central America and is mainly carried to the U.S. through black flies, sand flies, and biting midges. It can also be transmitted horse to horse or through shared water sources and equipment. The disease is characterized by blistery lesions on the nose, mouth, ears, or coronary bands, which are painful and may reduce a horse's appetite or cause lameness. Most cases resolve on their own, but old and vulnerable animals can struggle with it, and it can be passed to humans in some circumstances.

The best strategy for prevention, according to the USDA, is good insect control as well as quarantine policies for new horses arriving to a facility. There are vaccines in development for vesicular stomatitis, but none have been federally-approved for use in horses yet.

In 2019 and 2020 the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Animal and Plant Health Service dealt with large-scale outbreaks. The 2019 outbreak was the largest in four decades and included 1, 144 facilities across eight states. An outbreak in 2020 reached 326 premises in eight states.

The current outbreak is impacting facilities in Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties and started in an 11-year-old Quarter Horse mare. Facilities that have positive cases are placed under state quarantine until two weeks after the appearance of lesions from the last impacted animal.

Besides its impacts on animal health, vesicular stomatitis is problematic because it limits movement of both horses and cattle and can have a ripple effect on equine events which take place around the same time of year that vector insects are most active.

Stay informed on the California outbreak via the Equine Disease Communications Center or through the USDA's page for vesicular stomatitis.

Street Boss, Bucchero Fillies Share Quarter-Mile Bullet at OBS Friday

A pair of fillies shared the fastest quarter-mile work of the penultimate day of the under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training Friday in Ocala, while eight juveniles shared the fastest furlong time of :10 flat during a day pestered by persistent headwinds.

Consignor Omar Ramirez sent out a filly by Street Boss (hip 817) to share Friday's bullet time of :20 3/5 while working early in the day's first set.

“I was waiting for her all week,” Ramirez admitted. “I knew she was going to throw a big work. I knew whatever the bullet was going to be, she'd be close to it. She is a super nice filly.”

The juvenile, who was purchased for $75,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October sale, RNA'd for $145,000 following a :10 flat work at the OBS Spring Sale in April.

“She worked in :10 flat in April and she galloped out huge,” Ramirez said. “I said I would buy her back for $150,000. I didn't want to give her away because she is a nice filly. That's why I sent her a quarter this time, so people know she's a runner.”

The chestnut filly is out of Desperate Chick (Tribal Rule), a half-sister to graded winner Native Bombshell (War Front). Native Bombshell is the dam of stakes-winner Lady War Machine (Street Boss).

A filly by Bucchero (hip 785) from Sergio Centeno's Blue River Bloodstock consignment, matched that :20 3/5 time some 3 1/2 hours later. The chestnut filly is out of Corfu Lady (Corfu) and from the family of multiple graded winner Halo's Image. She was bred by Saul Rosas.

Ramirez also sent out a pair of Friday's furlong bullet workers: a colt by St Patrick's Day (hip 878, video) and a colt by Yoshida (Jpn) (hip 900, video).

The St Patrick's Day colt is another returnee from the April sale where he RNA'd for $35,000 after working in :10 flat.

“He's such a pretty horse,” Ramirez said of the bay colt, who is out of a half-sister to graded stakes winner Jenny's So Great (Greatness). “I don't know why we didn't get him sold in April, but I had to put him in to work late in the day at that sale. I knew he would work well today because he's really fast.”

From the first crop of Yoshida, hip 900 put in his bullet furlong work late in Friday's session.

“I'll be really honest with you, that was a shock with that colt,” Ramirez said. “I was not expecting :10 flat from him.”

Ramirez acquired the colt for $10,000 at the OBS October sale last fall and the June sale will be his first trip through the ring this year.

“I liked the colt, he was pretty and had all the right parts,” Ramirez said of his early impressions of the youngster. “I brought him to this sale to give him more of a chance to grow up.”

Also sharing Friday's fastest furlong time of :10 flat: a filly by Twirling Candy (hip 733, video) consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales; a colt by Solomini (hip 745, video) consigned by Britton Peak; a colt by The Big Beast (hip 787, video) consigned by AVP Training and Sales; a colt by Klimt (hip 806, video) consigned by Nice and Easy Thoroughbreds; a filly by Redesdale (hip 853, video) consigned by Harris Training Center; and a colt by Arrogate (hip 868, video) consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds.

“The track was definitely slow today,” Ramirez said. “I have a really nice Vino Rosso filly (hip 783) who worked in :21 2/5 and I think she's a little faster than that. There was a headwind today and I think that affected the times.”

The under-tack show concludes with a final session beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. The June sale will be held next Tuesday through Thursday with bidding commencing each day at 10 a.m.
