Disarm Splashes Home First in Matt Winn

Winchell Thoroughbreds' Disarm (c, 3, Gun Runner–Easy Tap, by Tapit) stormed past Verifying (Justify) in the final strides to win the relocated GIII Matt Winn S. at Ellis Park Sunday. Last seen finishing fourth in the GI Kentucky Derby, Disarm was sent off the even-money favorite in the race originally scheduled to be run at Churchill Downs. He was always within striking distance settled in third as Bo Cruz (Creative Cause) took the field through fractions of :24.46 and :48.73 over the sloppy going while tracked all the way by Verifying. Disarm lost ground on the far turn and was tipped out three wide at the top of the lane as Verifying forged to the lead with a furlong to run. Disarm found his best stride late, gliding past Verifying to win by a half-length. The final time for the nine furlongs was 1:49.59.

Disarm was second in the GII Louisiana Derby in March and earned his spot in the Kentucky Derby with a third-place effort in the Apr. 15 GIII Lexington S.

Desormeaux Has Riding Triple Day After Stewards Issue Alcohol-Related Ruling

In 2004, after 18 years as a professional jockey, Kent Desormeaux was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He was 34.

Desormeaux's induction into the Hall was earned after winning three Eclipse Awards, two Kentucky Derbies, a Preakness and setting a North American record for wins in a season. In 1989, Desormeaux rode a whopping 598 winners. It ranks as one of most unbreakable records in the world of sports.

Now age 53, Desormeaux on Saturday displayed that Hall of Fame form with a master class in the saddle at Santa Anita. With an ideal ride stalking the pace in the opener, plus two exquisitely timed rallies from last on the back-half of the 10-race card, he finished with three wins on the 10-race card.

“It's very invigorating, certainly a head picker-upper to have a day like that,” Desormeaux said Sunday morning from Clocker's Corner at the Arcadia, Calif. track. “On Friday, I had some indifferent rides and was a little upset. I went home Friday night banging my head.”

Earlier on Friday, Santa Anita stewards ruled Desormeaux, who has a history of alcohol-related problems, would be required to pass a daily breathalyzer test to ride in races or work horses. The ruling was in response to Desormeaux failing a breathalyzer test on March 31 prior to the first race.

“To have a day like Saturday, it energizes you,” Desormeaux said. “It's the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.”

Since his induction into the Hall of Fame, Desormeaux has added two more Kentucky Derby wins and three more Preakness victories. Entering Sunday's card at Santa Anita, he ranks seventh all-time in career purse earnings with $292,806,090 and 16th in wins with 6,148.

Saturday's wins came in the opener on turf with favorite Luminiferous ($5.00) for trainer George Papaprodromou, the eighth race on dirt by a nose with favorite Sunshine Babe ($5.80) for trainer Marcelo Polanco, and the ninth race on the hillside turf course by a neck with Count Of Amazonia ($11.00) for trainer Bob Hess Jr.

Desormeaux said he heard from numerous well-wishers after Saturday's hat trick.

“The text messages came in plenty,” he noted. “You just hope people notice that when you're mounted, you're still capable.”

Desormeaux now has 13 wins at the Hollywood Meet to rank sixth in the jockey standings. During the Classic Meet ended April 9, Desormeaux ranked 11th in the standings with 15 wins from 87 mounts, a 17 percent strike rate.

“I think it's been a real good winter and spring here at Santa Anita,” Desormeaux said. “I've landed some new barns I'd never ridden for. I credit my agent Susan McBrayer for that. She's done a wonderful job. The results have been solid.”

When the Santa Anita Hollywood Meet closes next Sunday, Southern California racing shifts to Los Alamitos for a three-week stand. Desormeaux plans to ride there only if the right opportunities arise.

“I would love to ride any important horse. It doesn't have to be a stakes horse,” Desormeaux said. “But generally, the horses that run there don't run at Del Mar. I like to freshen up ahead of Del Mar. It's a very intense meet.

He added the first order of business when Santa Anita closes is to visit his mother in Louisiana. Last month on April 22, Desormeaux's father, Harris Desormeaux, died at the age of 80.

“It's a good time for me to go visit my mother,” Desormeaux said. “Last month I lost my father, so I'm going to go keep her company for a week and then come back to tune-up for Del Mar.”

Upstart’s Prerequisite Wires the Wonder Again

First Row Partners and Team Hanley's Prerequisite went wire-to-wire to take the rescheduled GII Wonder Again S. in just her third career start at Belmont Park Sunday. Sent off at 7-1, the bay filly rushed up to take the lead into the first turn and she was tracked by Spansive (Karakontie {Jpn}) through fractions of :23.67 and :47.94 in a strung-out field down the backstretch. She scampered away into the lane and was clear in upper stretch, but was all out to hold off the late-closing Be Your Best.

“I hustled her out of the gate to get a good position and I found myself on the lead,” said winning rider Flavien Prat. “She was traveling well from there. She got really brave. Every time a horse came to her, she would dig in. It's a good sign that more distance will be fine.”

Fifth behind Spansive going one mile on debut over the Gulfstream lawn Apr. 1, Prerequisite graduated over the Wonder Again's course and nine-furlong distance May 7.

“I was really impressed with her maiden win here,” said winning trainer Chad Brown. “She's turning into a really nice filly and I appreciate the partners' patience. She wasn't able to make it there at two, and they did the right thing by letting us take our time with her and she's turned into quite a nice horse.”

The top three finishers of the Wonder Again received an automatic invitation to the July 8 GI Fasig-Tipton Belmont Oaks Invitational. The 1 1/4-mile turf test is the opening leg in the Fasig-Tipton Fillies Turf Triple, a series which also includes the Aug. 4 GIII Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Oaks Invitational at Saratoga and the 11-furlong GIII Fasig-Tipton Jockey Club Oaks Invitational to be held during the Belmont at the Big A fall meet.

Pedigree Notes:

Prerequisite is the fourth graded winner for Upstart.

The unraced Etsu, a full-sister to multiple stakes-winner Homeland Security, has a 2-year-old colt by Summer Front who sold for $130,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton July sale. The mare produced a colt by Complexity last year and a colt by Upstart this year. Etsu's dam, Forever Beautiful is a half-sister to champion Farda Amiga (Broad Brush). She produced a colt by Runhappy last year and a filly by Street Boss this year.

‘I Wouldn’t Rule It Out’: Mott Stablemates Cody’s Wish, Elite Power Could Meet In Forego At Saratoga

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott has a dilemma to resolve and it's where to run his multiple Grade 1 winners Cody's Wish and Elite Power next on the road back to defend their respective victories in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) in November.

Juddmonte Farm's Elite Power, the 2022 Eclipse Award-winning male sprinter, dominated the True North (G2) on Saturday's Belmont Stakes (G1) undercard. It was the 5-year-old son of Curlin's seventh straight win. Cody's Wish won his sixth straight race and overshadowed the competition in the Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan Handicap (G1) with his 3 1/4-length triumph.

The Met Mile win gave Godolphin's Cody's Wish, also a 5-year-old Curlin horse, a guaranteed spot in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita in November through the “Win and You're In” Challenge Series.

What will they do for an encore? It appears a battle royale between the stable stars could be shaping up at Saratoga this summer in the $500,000 Forego (G1), a seven-furlong sprint for older horses on August 26.

“They could possibly run against each other in the Forego. That would be the only race I could conceive,” Mott said on Sunday morning. “The timing of that race and the distance, it would be back to seven furlongs for Cody's Wish and up to seven eights for Elite Power. I could see it happening. I wouldn't rule it out.”

Elite Power is on track to the Spa's $350,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) on July 29, providing all stays on course.

“I think the most logical for him is the Alfred G. Vanderbilt. It's a Grade 1 sprint at six furlongs and between that and the Forego up there you've got two good races. The Forego would be a possibility for Cody's Wish, too. It just depends on what we do with Cody's Wish next time. We'll have to work that out as we go along,” Mott said.

The $1-million Whitney (G1) at 1 1/8 miles on August 5 isn't out of the question for Cody's Wish either, according to his trainer, though his ideal distance seems to be one-mile.

“He's won several races at the mile distance. He's won at the one-turn mile and at a two-turn mile. He's never won beyond a mile. Those are some of the challenges that we face now with where we go and what race we're going to run in. That will be under discussion over the next month,” said Mott.

What is not up for debate is what winning the Met Mile means to Mott. This stallion-making race, one of the most prestigious among all run in North America, was one of the very few blanks on the Hall of Famer's incredibly impressive resume. Before Saturday he had saddled 13 horses in the Met Mile for a record of 0-0-3.

“We've been able to score in a lot of the bigger races, and the Met Mile was certainly one I've been really wanting to win for a long time,” Mott said.“Because I've spoken about it so often, I've said it over and over this is a race I wanted to win. I guess when the words come out of your mouth it's public knowledge you want to win it. Well, we got it done yesterday. It's a big deal for sure.

“For me, and to take nothing away from the Belmont Stakes because we did that already [Drosselmeyer, 2010], the Met Mile was something that had eluded me for years, and I've run some really nice horses in the Met Mile, and I'd never been able to connect as a trainer so I was thrilled,” he continued.“This is something I'd wanted to do and I'm glad it was Cody's Wish who carried us to the winner's circle. He's a very nice horse. He's a very good horse. He is a horse with the highest level of quality. He ranks right up there with some good ones.”

As for enjoying that embarrassment of riches in his barn, Mott laughingly said, “Yeah, because they'll all be retired soon enough. I'll be down to Mr. T [the stable pony] over there and looking for a race to win.”

Cody's Wish, Elite Power, and Poppy Flower, who gave Mott his first win in the Intercontinental (G3) on Friday's card, left Belmont Park early Sunday morning and were vanning to Mott's division in Saratoga.

“They all came back fine from their races. Everybody is doing good,” he said.
