Poor Air Quality Leads To Friday Cancellations At Woodbine, Laurel Park

Racing cancellations due to poor air quality caused by Canadian wildfires continued on Friday, with Woodbine in Toronto, Canada, and Laurel Park in Laurel, Md., both announcing their live racing programs have been called off.

Following is the statement from Woodbine:

Woodbine Entertainment has announced today's card of live racing at Woodbine Racetrack is cancelled due to poor air quality.

Environment Canada's air quality index for Toronto is listed as 'High Risk' and is expected to remain at this level throughout Friday. Woodbine's decision to cancel comes through consultation with the HBPA and is consistent with the AGCO's air quality guidelines.

Woodbine will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as required.

The next card of live racing is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1:10 p.m.

Laurel Park announced its cancellation via a Tweet from the Maryland Jockey Club account:

According to a 9 a.m. ET reading on the Airnow.gov website, the air quality index (AQI) reading for Laurel, Md., was 153, considered “unhealthy” by the Environmental Protection Agency. It was as high as 197 on Thursday at 1 p.m., according to Airnow.gov.

The Friday Show Presented By The Jockey Club: Streamlining The Entry Process

One of many traditions in horse racing is its resistance to change. Sometimes, however, change is necessary. For example, when COVID-19 hit in 2020 and racing in many jurisdictions was shut down, the process of taking entries changed when backstretch access was limited and gatherings of people inside of a building (i.e., a racing office) were discouraged or prohibited.

Helping facilitate that change was a digital product known as the Interactive Racing Office (IRO) that had recently been developed by InCompass Solutions, a technology company created by The Jockey Club in 2001.

The Interactive Racing Office helps horsemen and women manage their stables by storing vital health and racing and training information on horses, also permitting them to submit stall applications, stakes nominations, and place entries to the racing office.

Chris Dobbins, senior vice president of InCompass Solutions, joins Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills on the Friday Show to explain the benefits of this free service, along with another free product, EquiTAPS, designed for veterinarians and trainers to facilitate many of the new requirements to submit treatment records under the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority. For more information on both products, visit www.incompass-solutions.com.

Auguste Rodin Faces Eight In Irish Derby

Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) will have eight peers to overcome on Sunday in his bid to become the fifth Derby winner for Aidan O'Brien to double up in the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at The Curragh. Among them are the Derby third White Birch (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) and fourth Sprewell (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}), the only runners not representing the O'Brien family with the Donnacha-trained Proud And Regal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Joseph-trained Up And Under (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) the others taking on a Ballydoyle quintet. Auguste Rodin is drawn next to the rail in one, with the habitual slow-starter White Birch widest of all in eight.

Incredibly, Ryan Moore is looking for a first renewal of this Classic and said in his Betfair blog, “If he runs up to the level of his form at Epsom, something is going to have improve markedly to beat him. I am sure the connections of White Birch and Sprewell will fancy their chances of at least getting closer to us on this more conventional track. And who is to say they won't. Different day, different course, different result maybe. But everyone saw the real Auguste Rodin in the Derby, stepped up to a trip more in keeping with his superb pedigree and everyone has seen how strong the form is with King Of Steel and Waipiro coming out and winning at Ascot.”

Pertemps Network Revealed as July Cup Sponsor

Newmarket's G1 July Cup is to be sponsored by Pertemps Network, one of the UK's largest recruitment agencies.

The top-class sprint, with a total prize fund of £600,000, is part of the QIPCO British Champions Series and takes place on the final day of the Boodles July Festival, which concludes on Saturday, July 15.

Pertemps is already a major sponsor of racing at the Cheltenham Festival, where it has given its backing to the Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle since 2002. It was also previously the sponsor of the St Leger at Doncaster during the 1990s.

“We are delighted to welcome Pertemps Network as the sponsor of the July Cup in 2023,” said Sophie Able, manager of Newmarket Racecourses and international director at The Jockey Club.

“Pertemps Network has a long and proud association with The Jockey Club stretching back over 20 years and it is great that they have made the decision to return to sponsorship of Group 1 Flat racing.

“The Pertemps Network July Cup is always a great spectacle and looks all set to be another marvellous contest this year, as three-year-old and older sprinters lock horns for the first time at Group 1 level.”

Tim Watts, lifetime president of Pertemps Network, added, “The July Cup is one of the most historic sprint races in England and we are delighted to have our name associated with it.

“Pertemps Network itself has a significant pedigree for backing British racing and we are very much looking forward to the Newmarket event next month.”

There are currently 18 entries for the Pertemps Network July Cup, headed by recent G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Shaquille (GB) (Charm Spirit {Ire}).
