Asmussen kept Echo Zulu around one turn in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) and was the runner-up to Goodnight Olive.

Pimlico: Rainbow 6 Carryover Jackpot Reaches $385,699 For Friday

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved for an eighth consecutive racing day Thursday at historic Pimlico Race Course, growing the carryover jackpot to $385,699.62 heading into Friday's nine-race program.

First race post time is 12:25 p.m.

A total of $77,665 was put into the popular multi-race wager on top of a carryover of $360,855.02 from the last live program May 20, highlighted by National Treasure's head victory over Blazing Sevens in the 148th Preakness Stakes (G1). Tickets with five of six winners Thursday each returned $1,096.08.

Last solved for a $364.74 mandatory payout May 7, on closing day of Laurel Park's spring meet, the Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot has yet to be cashed during Pimlico's Preakness Meet, which began May 11.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 60 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 40 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Maryland's state-record Rainbow 6 carryover reached $1,435,080.75 over 27 consecutive racing programs before a mandatory payout of $31,028.08 to multiple ticketholders July 4, 2021.

Introduced in Maryland April 2, 2015, on opening day of Pimlico's spring meet, the Rainbow 6 had a prior state record carryover of $345,898.33 spanning 31 racing programs before being solved by one lucky bettor for a life-changing $399,545.94 payout April 15, 2018 at Laurel Park.

Friday's Rainbow 6 spans Races 4-9 and includes five claiming events with Race 6 scheduled for 1 1/8 miles on the grass. A field of 10 fillies and mares 3 and older was entered led by narrow 3-1 program favorite Proper Storm. Trained by Tim Keefe, the 5-year-old daughter of Bourbon Courage broke her maiden second time out at the course and distance in May 2021. She is making her third start and first back on the grass off an 18-month layoff.

The feature comes in Race 7, a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds sprinting 4 ½ furlongs. Eight are entered to make their race debuts including Gold Square's Under the Overpass, a gray or roan son of Malibu Moon that brought $100,000 as a Keeneland yearling last fall, the 5-2 morning line favorite for trainer Brittany Russell; Gotts Got It, by Kantharos, and Lookin At Lucky colt Cap Cop, both Maryland homebreds of The Elkstone Group; and Mens Grille Racing's Wysoquiet, a West Virginia-bred son of Warrior's Reward trained by Jerry Robb.

Midnight Renegade's 18-1 upset of Race 6 Thursday meant that the $1 Jackpot Super High Five would go unsolved for a fourth straight racing day and swelled the carryover to $359,601.90 for Friday. Ridden by Johan Rosado for trainer Lacey Gaudet, Midnight Renegade ($33.80) won the maiden claimer for 3-year-olds in 1:10.56 for six furlongs over 8-5 favorite Pay Zone.

A total of $116,040 was bet into the Jackpot Super High Five on top of a $310,284.69 carryover from the May 20 program. The wager was last hit for a $10,383.50 payout May 14 at Pimlico.

Launched April 1, on opening day of Laurel Park's spring meet, the Jackpot Super High Five takes place in Race 6 every live race day. In the Jackpot Super High 5, the jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with each of the first five finishers in exact order. On days when there is no unique ticket, 50 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with all five finishers while 50 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

If there is no ticket with all five finishers in exact order, the entire pool will be carried over to the next day's Jackpot Super High Five.

There will also be a carryover of $36,279.48 in the 50-cent Late Pick 5 Friday (Races 5-9). Tickets with four of five winners Thursday returned $870.75.

Lope De Vega’s Enfjaar A New TDN Rising Star

On another big day for Shadwell, the 3-year-old bow of Enfjaar (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Tesoro {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) could easily have gone under the radar were it not for the deep impression the operation's latest TDN Rising Star created on Chelmsford's Polytrack. Having had the current Derby favourite Military Order (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) back in fourth when scoring on debut over seven furlongs at Newmarket in October, the Roger Varian-trained bay was the 4-7 favourite for the card's Racing Welfare Novice S. over a mile and broke smartly before being restrained.

A touch fresh tracking the leading pair throughout the early stages, the 240,000gns Tatts December Foal Sale graduate ranged alongside Lion Tamer (GB) (Roaring Lion) a furlong out and was soon in total command. Surging clear for David Egan, he had an impressive six lengths to spare over that Gosden representative at the line to become the sire's 13th TDN Rising Star. Among them are some big names such as Newspaperofrecord (Ire), Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) and Aunt Pearl (Ire).

The dam, a full-sister to the GI First Lady S. and GI Rodeo Drive S. heroine Photo Call (Ire), is also a half to the G2 Richmond S.-winning sire Land Force (Ire) (No Nay Never). They are out of the G3 Summer S. winner Theann (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), one of three group winners produced by the electric G2 King's Stand S. and G2 Temple S.-winning sprinter Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) including the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, G1 Nassau S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. winner Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}).

Halfway To Heaven was in turn responsible for the seven-times group-1 winning Magical (Ire) and triple group 1-winning Rhododendron (Ire) from matings with Tesoro's sire Galileo, with the latter responsible for last year's G1 Futurity hero and possible imminent Derby winner Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Cassandra Go's other pattern-race scorer is Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), whose career highs came in the G3 Abernant S. and G3 Sandown Sprint S. and who is now the dam of last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hero Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}). Tesoro's 2-year-old full-brother to Enfijaar named Nahy (Fr) caused a stir at the Book 1 Sale when going to Nawara Stud for 525,000gns, while her yearling colt by Almanzor (Fr) was a 72,000gns purchase by GHS Bloodstock at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

Magic Mule Gives Former Jockey Kerry Hohlbein First Career Training Victory

3 Reasons Racing's Magic Mule maintained a short lead through the first half-mile before pulling away to a comfortable and popular 2 ¾-length triumph Thursday at historic Pimlico Race Course, giving trainer Kerry Hohlbein her first career training victory.

Making his 39th lifetime start in the entry-level allowance for 3-year-olds and up sprinting six furlongs, 6-year-old gelding Magic Mule ($7.40) completed the distance in 1:01.57 over a fast main track while under wraps by jockey Angel Cruz.

Magic Mule set early fractions of 23.79 and 46.74 seconds while racing on the rail before opening up to a five-length lead at the top of the stretch, going five furlongs in 58.39. He was on cruise control through the lane to his fourth career win as Brilliant Ice rallied late to get second.

It was the 36th career starter and 11th this year for the 38-year-old Hohlbein, a Baltimore native who rode in Maryland over parts of four years between 2007 and 2011, winning 17 of 248 races.

Hohlbein's first starter, Money Room, finished fifth March 26, 2022 at Laurel Park. The next day Magic Mule ran fourth in a Laurel allowance.

Previously trained by W. Thomas 'Skip' McMahon, Magic Mule had run 16 times for Hohlbein with three seconds and five thirds before scoring the milestone win. Two of his runner-up finishes – May 21, 2022 at Pimlico and Oct. 16, 2022 at Laurel – came by a neck. In the other, he was beaten a nose by H P Moon in a six-furlong Laurel allowance Jan. 22.

“That horse I love,” Hohlbein said. “He tries his eyeballs out every time. You can't say enough good things about him.”

Holhbein had one other starter Thursday, 3-year-old Maryland-bred maiden gelding S S Sinatra, who ran fourth in Race 6.

A graduate of Baltimore's Lansdowne High School, Hohlbein did not come from a racing background but was inspired by Rosie Napravnik and Forest Boyce to become a jockey. Boyce, a finalist for the 2010 Eclipse Award as champion apprentice, continues to ride in Maryland.

According to Equibase statistics, Hohlbein made her pro riding debut Dec. 28, 2007 at Laurel, finishing seventh on Family Appeal. While working for trainer Dale Capuano, she had five mounts in 2008 and did not ride in 2009 before getting 43 mounts in 2010 and riding her first winner, Dixie Thief, Oct. 27 at Laurel.

Hohlbein's final mount came Dec. 2, 2011 at Laurel. She also rode at Pimlico, the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Charles Town, Colonial Downs, Delaware Park, Parx and Penn National over her career.

In 2020 Hohlbein began galloping for Hamilton Smith, the Laurel-based trainer with more than 2,000 career winners. She and her husband, Juan, started out with two horses.

“I figured I'd try something new, something different,” Hohlbein said. “We're starting off with just us and seeing how things pan out.”
