Belmont Notes: Raise Cain To Breeze Monday At Keeneland

Andrew and Rania Warren's Gotham (G3) winner Raise Cain will breeze on Monday at Keeneland in preparation for the $1.5-million Belmont Stakes (G1) June 10.

Trained by Ben Colebrook, the Violence colt was a troubled eighth last out in the Kentucky Derby (G1), finishing 10 lengths back of the victorious Mage. He had his first work back on May 22 at Keeneland, covering a half-mile in :50.80.

“He's come out of the Derby good and he'll work again tomorrow,” said Colebrook by phone from Kentucky. “If all is well, we'll ship up right before the race. He'll do all his work here.”

Raise Cain saved ground in ninth position through the early running of the Derby and made his move into the stretch only to be stymied by the fading pace presser Kingsbarns.

“He had a good trip early, but late in the race he got wiped out by Kingsbarns stopping and Disarm was coming and we got sandwiched and shuffled back. But he came running again to get up for eighth,” Colebrook said.

The $180,000 Keeneland September yearling sale purchase rose to prominence with his 7 1/2-length Gotham romp in March at Aqueduct Racetrack traveling a one-turn mile over a muddy and sealed main track.

Recruiter and Carmel Road dueled through swift splits of :22.52 and :45.53 in the one-mile Gotham, but Raise Cain, who was 11th of 14 early, advanced willingly under Jose Lezcano, overcoming traffic problems at the quarter pole before swinging four-wide to take command with an eighth to run and drawing clear.

The talented bay exited that effort to finish a late-moving fifth into slow fractions in the Blue Grass (G1) in April at Keeneland, closing from 10th-of-11 in the nine-furlong route won by Belmont Stakes rival Tapit Trice.

With a moderate pace often the norm in the 12-furlong Belmont, Colebrook said he is entrusting jockey Junior Alvarado with working out a more prominent trip.

“I don't think we'll get as much pace in the Belmont as we got in the Gotham unfortunately. So, we'll have to work out a different trip,” Colebrook said. “In the Blue Grass, we were just a little too far back off of slow fractions. If there's slow fractions in the Belmont, we're going to have to be a little bit closer and I think Junior will be great for that.”

Colebrook, a former assistant for New York-based Christophe Clement, enjoyed past success in 2018 at Belmont with Limousine Liberal, who he saddled to a third-place finish in the Metropolitan (G1) and a neck victory over Whitmore in the Belmont Sprint Championship (G2).

“I remember going there the first time when I was working for Christophe Clement and everyone tells you how big it is,” said Colebrook of the famous 'Big Sandy'. “But then you get out there as an exercise rider and the sheer size and scope of the place is like nothing else. It's a different atmosphere for a horse with those sweeping turns.”

Pedigree could be on Raise Cain's side in the Belmont being sired by a son of Medaglia d'Oro, who finished second in the 2002 Belmont Stakes. His dam, Lemon Belle, is by Lemon Drop Kid, who won the 1999 Belmont Stakes.

There's significant route depth to Raise Cain's profile as his second dam is multiple graded stakes winner Queenie Belle, who produced millionaire and 2010 Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic (G1) winner Unrivaled Belle.

Trio of Grade Ones Highlight Holiday Stakes Action Monday

Santa Anita will play host to three Grade I races, while Grade III action features the return of a champion at Churchill Downs and a talented Louisiana-bred attempting to make the grade at Lone Star Park during holiday stakes action Monday.

The GI Shoemaker Mile S. at Santa Anita is set to be the first of 41 Breeders' Cup Challenge series races in North America this year. A field of 11 goes postward seeking the winner's share of the $500,000, as well as an automatic berth in the GI Breeders' Cup FanDuel Mile, which will be held over the same course in November.

Trainer Phil D'Amato saddles three in the race, including morning-line favorite Hong Kong Harry (Ire) (Es Que Love {Ire}), who was a three-time graded winner in California last year. He was fourth behind reopposing stablemate Gold Phoenix (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}) in the Mar. 4 GI Frank Kilroe Mile before heading east for a runner-up effort in the May 6 GI Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic at Churchill Downs.

Gold Phoenix, who was 10th in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Turf, returned from his win in the Kilroe Mile to finish fourth when stretched to 1 1/4 miles for the Apr. 8 GII Charles Whittingham S. last time out. Unbeaten in two tries at a mile on grass, Gold Phoenix will be reunited with Japanese sensation Kazushi Kimura, who has been aboard for his last two starts and will fly in from his Toronto base for the ride Sunday.

Rounding out the D'Amato trio–who were all plundered from Europe to find graded success in the U.S.–is Balnikhov (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}), who was seventh in the Kilroe Mile before getting up in the last jump to win the Apr. 29 GIII San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate in his most recent start.

Both Gold Phoenix and Balnikhov represent the red-hot Little Red Feather partnership, which won four stakes last weekend.

An hour before the Shoemaker Mile, seven older fillies and mares head postward at Santa Anita for the GI Gamely S. Trainer Michael McCarthy will saddle morning-line favorite Queen Goddess (Empire Maker). The 5-year-old raced last year for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and her breeder TOLO Thoroughbreds and, after selling for $1.525 million at Fasig-Tipton last November, returned for the partnership of Eclipse Thoroughbreds and Gary Barber to win the GIII Robert J. Frankel S. last December. She added a win in the GIII TAA Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Invitational at Gulfstream in January and returns to the West Coast following a sixth-place effort in the Apr. 15 GI Jenny Wiley S. at Keeneland.

D'Amato has two chances in the nine-furlong Gamely, with School Dance (Animal Kingdom) and Macadamia (Brz) (Hat Trick {Jpn}) in the line-up.

The GI Gold Cup concludes the Grade I action at Santa Anita Monday. Trainer Bob Baffert holds a strong hand in the 1 1/4-mile race with Country Grammer (Tonalist) and Defunded (Dialed In) appearing to tower over the six-horse field. Country Grammer, second in the Feb. 25 G1 Saudi Cup, will look to get back on track following a seventh-place effort while attempting a defense of his title in the G1 Dubai World Cup at Meydan in March. Defunded had to settle for third after setting the pace over this track and trip in the Mar. 4 GI Santa Anita H., but returned to the winner's circle with a three-length tally in the Apr. 22 GII Californian S. last time out.

In other graded stakes action across the country, champion Echo Zulu (Gun Runner) makes her return to the races in the GIII Winning Colors S. at Churchill Downs. Champion 2-year-old filly of 2021, the 4-year-old has been off since finishing second in the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint last November at Keeneland.

Touchuponastar (Star Guitar) looks for his seventh straight victory in the GIII Steve Sexton Mile S. at Lone Star Park. The Louisiana-bred, trained by Jeff Delhomme, will be making his first start outside state-bred company. The 4-year-old's toughest competition might be the Mike Maker-trained 7-year-old Endorsed (Medaglia d'Oro), who won a pair of one-mile graded events at Gulfstream this past winter.

Kentucky Derby Runner-Up Two Phil’s To Aim For Ohio Derby

Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up Two Phil's will bypass the Belmont Stakes (G1) June 10 and instead point to the $500,000 Ohio Derby (G3) going 1 1/8 miles June 24 at Thistledown, trainer Larry Rivelli told BloodHorse.

The Hard Spun colt breezed five furlongs Sunday at Rivelli's base at Hawthorne Race Course, clocking :59.80, the fastest of 15 timed moves at the distance. The drill marked his second breeze since finishing second to Mage in first jewel of the Triple Crown May 6.

Rivelli decided to pass on the middle jewel, the Preakness (G1) May 20 at Pimlico, because of the short turnaround time.

Two Phil's, owned by breeder Phil Sagan, Patricia's Hope, and Madaket Stables, won the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) March 25 at Turfway Park on the road to the Kentucky Derby and was second in the Lecomte (G3) Jan. 21 and a third in the Risen Star (G2) Feb.18, both at Fair Grounds in his first two outings this year.
