Siyouni’s Paddington Eases To Tetrarch Success

Maintaining the Ballydoyle momentum at The Curragh on Monday, TDN Rising Star Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}–Modern Eagle {Ger}, by Montjeu {Ire}) justified 5-6 favouritism with a degree of comfort in the Listed Coolmore Stud Blackbeard Irish EBF Tetrarch S. to point the way to the upcoming mile Classics. Coming off a win in the Madrid Handicap at Naas, the bay who was bred and raised at Monceaux for the Wildensteins tracked the leading pair up to a mile for the first time before being coaxed to the front by Seamie Heffernan two out. Challenged by stablemate Drumroll (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), he stretched away from that full-brother to Saxon Warrior (Jpn) to score by 1 1/2 lengths.

According to Aidan O'Brien, Paddington could now follow the route of the stable's famous son of Siyouni, St Mark's Basilica (Fr). “He'd have the option of going to the French Guineas or the Irish Guineas and then he could end up being a French Derby horse after that,” he said. “He handles the ground well, he's by Siyouni out of a Montjeu mare so should handle it on both sides.”

Paddington is currently the last known foal out of the Listed Prix Belle de Nuit winner Modern Eagle, whose first foal Masterpiece (Fr) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) was twice listed-placed in France. She is a daughter of the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Millionaia (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and a half to the Listed Vintage Tipple S. winner and G3 Loughbrown S.-placed Mighty Blue (Fr) by Montjeu's Authorized (Ire). Millionaia is out of the G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Moonlight Dance (Alysheba), who is also the second dam of the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris scorer Ming Dynasty (Fr) (King's Best) while the fourth dam Madelia (Fr) (Caro) scored three times at the highest level including in the Diane.

Old Friends: ‘Classy’ Mystery Trip Dies At 22

Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement facility in Georgetown, Ky., announced today that Mystery Trip, an unraced mare who came to the farm courtesy of LNJ Foxwoods, was euthanized due to chronic hoof issues. She was 22.

Bred by W. S. Farish & Kilroy Thoroughbred Partnership, Mystery Trip was foaled in Kentucky on March 13, 2001.

The dark bay mare, who is by Belong To Me-Weekend Surprise, by Secretariat, began her broodmare career with Farish & Kilroy Thoroughbred Partnership. Then, in 2016, the mare was purchased at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale for $230,000 by Alex Solis and Jason Litt of Solis/Litt Bloodstock for LNJ Foxwoods, which is owned by Larry, Nanci, and Jaime Roth.

As a broodmare, Mystery Trip's best progeny include Gallant Fields, winner of four of 25 races and earnings of $297,102, and Variant Perception, winner of two of 17 races and earnings of $105,614.

A half-sister to A.P. Indy and Summer Squall, Mystery Trip came to Old Friends as part of an agreement made between Michael Blowen, president and founder of Old Friends, and LNJ. The agreement came about when LNJ approached Blowen with the idea of retiring some of their mares to Old Friends, and in return LNJ would build a paddock on the farm for them and make a donation to support them.

Mystery Trip, and Gold Round (GB), were the first mares retired to Old Friends by LNJ and arrived on Sept. 7, 2020.

On their Instagram account when Mystery Trip arrived at Old Friends, @LNJFoxwoods wrote: “Responsible ownership is the cornerstone of the LNJ operation,” said LNJ's Jaime Roth. “Over a year ago, my family met with Michael Blowen with the idea of creating our own paddock for retired LNJ broodmares to peacefully live out the end of their lives. To now see that concept come to fruition is pretty awesome. Knowing that Gold Round, Mystery Trip, and future LNJ broodmares will be celebrated by visitors while having a retirement haven is invaluable to my family.”

After visiting their mare at Old Friends, @LNJFoxwoods later added, “Great to see our retired broodmares Gold Round and Mystery Trip settled in nicely in the new LNJ Paddock @oldfriends; we are grateful to Michael Blowen for this unique opportunity to provide aftercare for @LNJFoxwoods broodmares.”

Mystery Trip enjoyed over two years of peaceful retirement at Old Friends before she died.

“Mystery Trip was as classy as her pedigree suggests,” said Blowen. “Thanks to everyone at LNJ Foxwoods for trusting us with her and supporting all of our retirees. We miss her a lot already.”

No Mas Tequila Named 2022 Texas Horse Of The Year

The Texas Thoroughbred Association has named No Mas Tequila as the 2022 Texas Horse of the Year. Owned by James Sills and trained by Karen Jacks, No Mas Tequila has also been awarded champion older filly and mare in Texas for her on track performance in 2022.

With an explosive turn of foot off the turn, No Mas Tequila put on a show on Texas turf courses in 2022. The now 6-year-old mare, by Northern Afleet out of the Street Boss mare Foxy Boss, amassed four wins on the grass in 2022, all in Texas-bred stakes races at Lone Star Park and Sam Houston Race Park.

She opened her 2022 campaign with a commanding win in the Miss Bluebonnet Turf Stakes at Sam Houston, defeating previous Texas Champions in no-doubt fashion. She returned to the Houston turf a month later, on Texas Champions Day, to capture the San Jacinto Turf. Her summer campaign included Texas-bred stakes victories in the Lane's End Danny Shifflett Scholarship Stakes and the Fiesta Mile, both at Lone Star Park.

No Mas Tequila's dam, Foxy Boss, has been named the 2022 Texas Broodmare of the Year. And her breeders, Ronald and Margaret Ellerbee, have been awarded the Texas Thoroughbred Association's 2022 Breeder of the Year.

No Nay Never Newcomer Wins Diminished First Flier

Four withdrawals marred The Curragh's Listed GAIN First Flier S., with the winners and likely favourites Bucanero Fuerte (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and Noche Magica (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) among them, resulting in the bizarre circumstance of just five runners with two outings between them. In the event, it was the three newcomers who filled the frame with Ballydoyle's His Majesty (Ire) (No Nay Never–Czabo {GB}, by Sixties Icon {GB}) coming out on top to provide the stable with back-to-back renewals. Looking set to play a bit-part at best when caught flat-footed two out, the 5-2 second favourite picked up for Seamie Heffernan's whip to head the Adrian Murray-trained Valiant Force (Malibu Moon) inside the final 50 yards and score by 3/4 of a length, with 1 1/2 lengths back to the other Rosegreen runner and 15-8 favourite Unquestionable (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in third.

“He did it lovely, he's a lovely big sleepy horse,” Aidan O'Brien said. “Seamus said he had loads of speed but he was relaxed, he said when he clicked he found plenty. He's like a four-year-old, a big mature horse. You always try to get two runs before Ascot, but it's hard enough to do it here because there aren't many races.”

Czabo, who was successful in the G3 Park Express S. and Listed Prix des Lilas, produced as her first foal the useful Coill Avon (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) who beat St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in a maiden here three years ago. Out of the Listed Masaka S. runner-up Fiumicino (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) related to last year's G3 Prix Miesque winner Moon Ray (Fr) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), the descendant of the G1 Irish St Leger heroine Dark Lomond (Ire) (Lomond) also has a yearling full-brother to the winner.
