Mr Hollywood Stars In Munich’s Bavarian Classic

Wanja Soren Oberhof and Sebastian Weiss's Mr Hollywood (Ire) (Iquitos {Ger}–Margie's Music {Fr}, by Hurricane Run {Ire}) provided evidence of above-average ability when streaking to a 16-length triumph, and 'TDN Rising Stardom', in his Apr. 2 debut at Mulheim last time and photobombed the G1 Deutsches Derby picture with a decisive success in Monday's G3 Wettstar.de – Bavarian Classic at Munich.

Positioned off the clear leader in fifth until turning for home in this 10-furlong contest, the 2-1 joint-favourite powered forward in the straight to lead approaching the final furlong and, despite rolling around in front, kept on strongly in the closing stages to account for G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen victor and market rival Alpenjager (Ger) (Nutan {Ire}) by three lengths in taking fashion. Last year's G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten hero Fantastic Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), hitherto undefeated, finished 4 1/2 lengths adrift in third.

“It is usually a very difficult race to win, but not with him as he is such a fast horse on this ground,” winning rider Lukas Delozier told GallopOnline. “He was very green today, in every way, but he coped well with the softened ground. This is a good track, he is sure to improve for his next start and I think he is good enough for the [Deutsches] Derby.” Trainer Henk Grewe added, “He had worked very well at home [in Cologne] and we were expecting him to run well under the given circumstances, but working and racing can differ a great deal. He is sure to have learned a lot and will improve.” Connections indicated Germany's premier Derby trial, the [June 11] G2 Union-Rennen [at Cologne], is next on the agenda.

Pedigree Notes
Mr Hollywood (Ger) (Iquitos {Ger}), who becomes the first stakes scorer from only four first-crop foals for his sire (by Adlerflug {Ger}), is the second of three foals out of Listed Escada Cup runner-up Margie's Music (Fr) (Hurricane Run {Ire}). The February-foaled bay's stakes-placed second dam Margie's World (Ger) (Spinning World) is a half-sister to G2 Gerling-Preis third Margosto (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}) and Listed Fruhjahrs-Stutenpreis placegetter Masai Mara (Ger) (Shaadi). His fourth dam Our Little Margie (Majestic Light) finished second in the GI Spinaway S. and her descendants include GIII Miesque S. victrix Paddy's Daisy (King Of Kings {Ire}). Margie's Music has also produced last year's G3 Derby-Trial runner-up Magical Beat (Ger) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Moosbeere (Ger) (Waldgeist {GB}).

Trainer John Stinebaugh Scores 1,000th Quarter Horse Victory At Remington Park

Veteran trainer John Stinebaugh scored his 1,000th career American Quarter Horse victory when LS Jacks Back crossed the finish line first in the featured allowance race at Remington Park on Sunday.

According to the American Quarter Horse Association, that put Stinebaugh at 1,000 in wins in a career that has spanned several decades. He began with the best – legendary trainer Blane Schvaneveldt, who was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame in 2001. He was the nation's top Quarter Horse trainer in the country 10 times and won 38 training titles at Los Alamitos in California. So, Stinebaugh, who makes his home in San Antonio, soaked in everything he could learn from his time with the master and it has paid off.

In 2012, Stinebaugh saddled three horses in the biggest race for Quarter Horses annually, the Grade 1 All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico and then had a chance to win the 2-year-old Triple Crown in 2021 with Jess Savin Candy. That son of 2015 All American Futurity winner Jess Good Candy had won the $1 million Ruidoso Futurity, the $1 million Rainbow Futurity and his All American Futurity trial, qualifying him for that opportunity. As the even-money favorite, he could only manage a fourth-place finish behind KJ Desperado. His horses, over the years, have earned more than $21 million.

Stinebaugh said he had never seen any horse Jess Savin Candy, going into that race, the way he had matured and stayed sound through the hardships of racing. Remington Park's leading rider in 2022, Francisco Calderon, was the winning jockey aboard Jess Savin Candy for his win streak as a 2-year-old. Jess Savin Candy's record at retirement was 10 starts, five wins, one second and one third for $1,061,560 in earnings.

In Sunday's milestone-achieving race, Stinebaugh watched as his 4-5 wagering favorite LS Jacks Back went straight to the front in the 330-yard allowance race and was never headed, winning by a half-length over Gigi Tianna (7-1), who was another half-length in front of third-place finisher Tellem Im High (5-1). Jockey Ricky Ramirez was in the irons for Stinebaugh for the 1,000th victory. Stinebaugh trains this 4-year-old gelded son of Corona Cartel, out of the Desirio mare PJ Chick in Black, for owner LS Racing (Lynne Smith) of Comber, Ontario, Canada.

LS Jacks Back stopped the timer in :16.538, earning a 98 speed index and $17,742 for the win, improving his record to 16 starts, three wins, three seconds and three thirds for a total bankroll of $163,814.

During his career, Stinebaugh has had multiple Grade 1 winners other than Jess Savin Candy. They include Double Down Special (All American Derby), Hes Limitless (Sooner State Stakes), Sure Shot B (Texas Classic Futurity), Watergirl B (Lee Berwick Futurity), Perrys Double Down (Texas Classic Derby) and Cobalt Creek (Refrigerator Handicap).

Double Down Special was also a millionaire for Stinebaugh, running out $1.2 million in his career.

Like Stinebaugh says when it comes to big races, “you just got to be ready to be lucky.”

Tracked by more than 174,000 fans on Facebook and 10,700 Twitter followers, Remington Park has provided more than $317 Million to the State of Oklahoma general education fund since the opening of the casino in 2005. Located at the junction of Interstates 35 & 44, in the heart of the Oklahoma City Adventure District, Remington Park features the 2023 American Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa season through June 3. Remington Park presents simulcast racing daily and non-stop casino gaming. Visit remingtonpark.com for more information.

Leading NH Figure Richard Aston Dies at 68

Richard Aston, co-owner of Goldford Stud and one of the leading lights of the National Hunt breeding scene, died on Saturday at the age of 68 after recently being diagnosed with cancer.

A former amateur rider over jumps, Aston was also chairman of Bangor-on-Dee racecourse and previously a director of its neighbouring Chester racecourse for eight years. Among his many roles within the bloodstock industry, he was a former member of the TBA's National Hunt Committee and one of the driving forces behind the popular TBA National Hunt Foal Show.

David Futter of Yorton Stud, who worked closely with Aston on the National Hunt Committee, said on Monday, “Richard was a great ally to me, and a friend and confidant. I used to pick his brains and ask for his advice when I was buying stallions. He has been a big part of my life over the last 20 years and it's extremely sad.”

He added, “He was integral to the foal show. If it wasn't for Richard getting it organised and staging it at Bangor we would never have got it off the ground. He's been a great supporter of National  Hunt breeding and very successful at it, and he's been taken well before his time.”

Broadcaster Nick Luck was also heavily involved with the TBA National Hunt Foal Show over the years, both as breeder and master of ceremonies, and he paid tribute to Aston on his Nick Luck Daily podcast, describing him as “a man of great knowledge, great humility, great humour, and enormous wisdom and insight.”

Leading National Hunt bloodstock agent David Minton also shared his thoughts on his friend on the podcast in conversation with Luck. He said, “[Richard] was a wonderful person. I've known him all my life really, as my father used to ride his grandfather's point-to-pointers.

“He was a very competent horseman in his own right. He rode winners and then commentated a bit, and then of course he set up Goldford Stud with Sally, which has become a tower of strength in the National Hunt business, both at Doncaster and at the Derby Sale, which they topped regularly.”

The Astons' hugely successful Goldford Stud in Cheshire has been the birthplace of a raft of decent jumpers, including Cue Card (GB) and, more recently, this season's Morebattle Hurdle winner Benson (GB). Though more readily associated with the National Hunt sphere, Goldford has also featured prominently at Flat sales and is home to mares owned by Allan Belshaw, breeder of G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Newspaperofrecord (Ire). In 2021, Goldford Stud sold her dam Sunday Times (GB) on Belshaw's behalf to Coolmore for 1.8 million gns, making her the third-top lot of the Tattersalls December Mares' Sale.

Richard Aston is survived by his wife Sally and son Charlie, to whom we extend our sincere condolences.
