Canterbury Park Completes Sale Of 37 Acres For Entertainment Amphitheater

Canterbury Park Holding Corporation has announced that it has completed the sale of 37 acres of land to Bloomington Investments, LLC, an entity related to Swervo Development, for total consideration of $8.8 million. The land sold is situated adjacent to County Road 83 and Unbridled Avenue in the northeast corner of Canterbury's campus.

With the land sale and government approvals now complete, Swervo expects construction of its planned 19,000-capacity open air amphitheater to begin this Spring, with the venue opening anticipated to be Summer 2025. Following the land sale, Canterbury will continue the redevelopment of the horse stabling area, which serves its racing business, with new barns and a new dormitory complex.

“We are thrilled to complete this land sale to Swervo and excited to work with them as they begin to transform the northeast corner of our campus into a premier destination for live music and entertainment,” said Randy Sampson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Canterbury. “We believe the amphitheater will create long-term opportunities for our companies to collaborate as we further enhance the entertainment product we offer at Canterbury Park and Canterbury Commons. Furthermore, the amphitheater represents a critical first step in the evolution of our entertainment district that ultimately will include more than 40 additional acres for development.”

Canterbury Park announced plans for Canterbury Commons in 2018, laying out its vision for the creation of a multi-use redevelopment of underutilized property in Shakopee, Minnesota that complements the Company's existing operations and creates an entertainment district where people will “live, work, play and stay.” A 28,000 square foot premium office building was completed by Greystone Construction in 2021, and a new brewery and restaurant are scheduled to open in early Summer 2023. In addition, more than 1,000 units of upscale residential apartments and for-sale townhomes are in various stages of completion or construction.

“There is tangible construction momentum across Canterbury Commons and our efforts continue to show promise on the business development front,” added Canterbury's Vice President of Real Estate, Jason Haugen. “Our team recognizes the tremendous potential of Canterbury Commons, and we are committed to curating a number of uses as we target entertainment options and brands that are new to the greater Shakopee community and the State of Minnesota. We look forward to sharing more about our plans in the coming months and believe this project will be a source of pride for our community.”

Study: Horse Bites Are Serious Business

A study from Portugal has shown that the equine mouth may harbor more bacteria than previously thought. Researchers at University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro took samples from the gum margins of 30 horses across Portugal that had not received antimicrobial drugs in the previous 6 months.

Led by Dr. José Pimenta, the scientists then characterized the oral Gram-negative microbiota in the samples. In total, they found 55 Gram-negative isolates, with 89.5 percent being zoonotic and 62 percent capable of affecting humans.

The phenotypic resistance was higher to macrolides, β-lactams and quinolones, and lower to sulfonamides, tetracyclines, and amphenicols. Interestingly, 51.5 percent of the isolates were resistant to carbapenems, an antimicrobial often used in human medical settings. This can be an issue when treating horse bite wounds that become infected, they report.

Additionally, 96 percent of the isolates were multidrug resistant. The researchers reported that horses are considered reservoirs of multidrug-resistant bacteria; they can spread bacteria found in their mouths throughout the environment, to other animals and to humans through their saliva. Because horses are often transported, the researchers say they have potential for worldwide impact on multidrug resistance transmission.

The scientists state that equine bite wounds should be taken seriously because of the plethora of highly resistant bacteria and its zoonotic capabilities found inside equine mouths.

Apprentice Mauro Cedillo Hospitalized After Thistledown Spill; Remaining Races Cancelled

Apprentice jockey Mauro Cedillo, a 24-year-old native of Guatemala, was hospitalized on Monday following a spill during the running of the first race at JACK Thistledown racetrack in North Randall, Ohio.

Cedillo was racing on the lead aboard Spectacular Road, the 2-1 second choice in the 5 1/2-furlong race for $5,000 claimers run over a sealed muddy track, when the 10-year-old gelding appeared to stumble, his nose momentarily going down toward the ground. Cedillo was tossed over the horse's neck, landing awkwardly, and then somersaulting after appearing to get struck by a horse racing directly behind him.

Cedillo was attended to at the scene and then transported to a local hospital before being taken by helicopter to the emergency room at MetroHealth Medical Center's main campus, about 15 miles away from the track in Cleveland.

Specific injuries or his condition are not known at this time.

Spectacular Road continued to run before being caught by an outrider.

The remainder of the day's eight-race card was cancelled, an unnamed official for the track telling the Thoroughbred Daily News that Cedillo's fellow jockeys voted not to ride.

Cedillo, cousin of Southern California-based rider Abel Cedillo, began riding as an apprentice in the U.S. in 2021, scoring his first win aboard Chillville at Thistledown on June 11, 2022. By year's end, with George Wolfe Award-winning retired jockey Luis Quinones serving as his agent, Cedillo won the leading rider title at Ohio's Mahoning Valley racecourse fall meet, winning with 33 of 196 mounts.

Early this year, there were reports Cedillo was going to join his cousin in Southern California, where Derek Lawson had contacted him to be his agent. Those plans changed, however, and Cedillo remained in Ohio, moving to Thistledown when that meet started on April 24.
