Kentucky Derby 149 Early Impressions: Dr. Barry Eisaman on Practical Move

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – TDN Senior Racing Editor Steve Sherack catches up with the connections of leading GI Kentucky Derby contenders to get their 'Early Impressions.'

After pairing up matching 100 Beyer Speed Figures for trainer Tim Yakteen while capturing the GII San Felipe S. and GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby, Practical Move (Practical Joke) has firmly established himself as the best of the west heading into the Kentucky Derby.

Last term's GII Los Alamitos Futurity winner brought $230,000 from owners Leslie and Pierre Amestoy and Roger Beasley out of the Eisaman Equine consignment (:10 1/5 breezer) as an OBS April 2-year-old.

“We first met him not long after the Keeneland yearling sale and he came to us to break for his breeders with the intent of selling him at the OBS sales,” Dr. Barry Eisaman said.

“He was a different type of horse than many Practical Jokes that we've had. He was bigger than most and had a really laid-back personality. He had a two-turn physique look to him. He learned all his early lessons very well and was an ideal pupil. When we started doing any little bit of speed work, he would have plenty of speed and displayed it effortlessly. Whenever a little speed drill for the day would be over, he would just drop his head and head back to the barn oozing class and intelligence. He displayed a lot of speed and had an exceptionally good gallop out at the sale.”

Bred in Kentucky by four-time Eclipse Award winning-trainer Chad Brown and Sol Kumin's Head of Plains Partners, Practical Move previously RNA'd for $90,000 as a KEESEP yearling. He is one of 15 graded winners for young sire Practical Joke and is out of the grassy, multiple stakes-placed Afleet Alex mare Ack Naughty. She brought $500,000 from Chester and Mary Broman in foal to Upstart earlier this year at Keeneland January.

“He's out of an Afleet Alex mare,” Eisaman said. “I'm thinking that part of his gene pool could favor him giving him the ability to get Classic distances, hopefully. Tim's done a fantastic job with him. The horse really seems to have winning on his mind. He's been pretty courageous.”

Champion I'll Have Another (Flower Alley), the 2012 GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S. winner, was also a product of the Eisamans. He brought $35,000 from agent Dennis O'Neill on behalf of Reddam Racing out of the Eisaman Equine consignment at the OBS April 2-year-old sale.

Runaway GIII Gotham S. winner Raise Cain (Violence) will give the Eisamans two chances at a second Kentucky Derby win. The Andrew and Rania Warren colorbearer was broken by the Eisamans and RNA'd for $65,000 from their consignment at last year's OBS June 2-year-old sale. Bred in Kentucky by Rock Ridge Thoroughbreds, he was produced by a Lemon Drop Kid half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic heroine Unrivaled Belle (Unbridled's Song). Raise Cain was previously a $180,000 KEESEP yearling.

“We'll have two chances,” Eisaman said. “It's a lot of fun. We decided years ago not to have a racing stable. We're service providers to some of the largest racing outfits in the country. When we have horses that we sell, we want them all to do wonderful things for the people that buy them. It's really rewarding and fun and we couldn't be happier for all these connections.”

Dr. Larry Bramlage To Receive Dinny Phipps Award

Noted equine surgeon Dr. Larry Bramlage will be presented with the Dinny Phipps Award, the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation said in a release Wednesday.

Created in 2017, the award will be presented at a dinner hosted by the chairman of The Jockey Club, Stuart S. Janney III, in Saratoga Springs, New York, the week of the Round Table Conference on Matters Pertaining to Racing, which is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 3.

“This is especially meaningful for me based on who it is named after,” Dr. Bramlage said. “The Phipps family has played a big role in my career by giving me some credibility early on when I was still 'wet behind the ears.' I will look forward to this event and will always cherish the honor.”

Entries Now Open For TIF Derby Prop Contest To Benefit Racing Charities

Entries are now open for the 2023 TIF Derby Prop Contest.

A set of 20 prop-style questions face contest participants. The props are similar to those available at legal sportsbooks in a growing number of American jurisdictions

Entrants are playing for the chance to choose the direction of $20,000 in donations from the Lavin Family Foundation to four racing charities: Backside Learning Center at Churchill Downs, New Vocations, Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, and Second Stride.

“We thought this was a fun way to draw attention to the need for racing to modernize its offerings to the wagering public while supporting some tremendous charitable endeavors,” said TIF Executive Director Patrick Cummings. “Legalized sports betting is coming to Kentucky and horse racing needs to be a part of that sooner rather than later. A betting product that is exclusively pari-mutuel is out-of-touch with present-day consumers.”

The deadline for contest entries is 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 6.

A contest for racing media members will take place as well, with the media selections published to TIF's website by mid-day on Friday. The winning media participant will get to direct $2,000 in donations to the nominated charities.

Overall contest winners will be notified by email late on Saturday evening to identify how to direct charitable donations.

Those wishing to enter the contest can CLICK HERE to launch the contest portal.

Another Strangles Positive At The Thoroughbred Center; Triple Diamonds Quarantine Released

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture is continuing to monitor an outbreak of strangles which began with a 3-year-old Thoroughbred filly at the Thoroughbred Training Center in Fayette County, Ky., according to an update posted to the Equine Disease Communication Center's website on Wednesday.

An epidemiologic investigation indicated the potential for strangles to reach a total of three facilities: the Thoroughbred Training Center, Keeneland Race Course, and Triple Diamonds Training Center on Russell Cave Road. One unnamed trainer housed horses at all three facilities.

The affected barn at Keeneland was released from quarantine last week, and the affected barn at Triple Diamonds Training Center has now been released from quarantine as well.

However, testing performed April 28 at The Thoroughbred Center identified one horse with a low level of strangles DNA present, so that barn remains under quarantine. Horses there will be sampled again later this week.

The full update from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture is as follows:

Premises 1 The Thoroughbred Center: The population of horses remaining in the affected barn at The Thoroughbred Center were sampled Friday morning, April 28th. A three (3) year old filly under the care of the single trainer with previous positive horses was found to have a low level of DNA detected and was moved to the private quarantine offsite. The remaining five (5) horses were all reported to be negative. The ten (10) horses under the care of the second trainer were also sampled on April 28th with each of these horses found to be negative. The group of negative horses remaining in the affected barn at The Thoroughbred Center will be sampled again later this week.

Premises 3: The quarantine placed on a barn at Triple Diamonds Training Center has been released. With the population of horses housed in this barn having tested negative on three separate occasions over the last two weeks, and with daily monitoring showing no suspected illness, we can confidently release the previously imposed quarantined barn on Triple Diamonds Training Center and allow the trainer with horses remaining in this barn to resume his normal daily operations effective immediately. Horses residing in Barn one (1) are no longer under regulatory restriction and may resume their normal training activity tomorrow morning at Triple Diamonds. We will continue to closely monitor the health of these horses, requiring daily reports be made to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's Equine Operations Consultant with the Office State Veterinarian. Additionally, a two (2) year old filly that had moved from the affected barn to the private quarantine with the single trainer's other horses on April 20th was found to have an enlarged mandibular lymph node the morning of April 28th. At the time the filly was moved from premises 3 to the private quarantine, she was sampled and reported negative. The abscess was lanced late evening on April 28th with the specimen submitted for bacterial analysis. The bacterial culture did identify streptococcus equi to be present. Again, testing at the time of moving to quarantine from the barn on premises 3 provides evidence the filly was not shedding the disease-causing bacteria when relocated. We appreciate the cooperation of the horsemen and management at Three Diamonds and are pleased to announce there are no quarantines in place at Three Diamonds Training Center.

Racing in Kentucky: Based on the epidemiologic work and our findings to date, we have made minimal adjustments to our health requirements for horses to enter Kentucky racetracks. Horses shipping to Kentucky tracks from areas not impacted continue to qualify their entry by meeting the established health requirements that includes a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) stating the examination and issuance of the certificate was done during the 72hrs preceding the horse's entry.

Quarantined Premises: Horses moving from non-affected barns on a facility that has barns under order of quarantine issued by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture continue to be accompanied by a CVI demonstrating the examination and issuance of the certificate was completed during the same day as arrival. Veterinarians or horsemen should contact the track's stabling office or veterinarian for instruction on how to accommodate the same day CVI on horses departing during the early morning or late evening hours. In addition to Kentucky tracks, I have been made aware that other regional tracks have similar same day or 24hr CVI requirement. Veterinarians and/or trainers are responsible for ensuring their horses meet the track's defined health requirements.”

The upper respiratory disease commonly referred to as strangles is caused by Streptococcus equi subsp equi. Strangles is spread from horse to horse through direct contact. Horses can also contract the disease by coming into contact with contaminated surfaces. The disease is highly infectious.
