Siyouni Colt Another TDN Rising Star At Naas

There was a strong vibe about Ballydoyle's Johannes Brahms (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}–Illaunmore, by Shamardal) ahead of Saturday's six-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Race at Naas and he did not disappoint to show distinct promise and earn TDN Rising Star status. Jumping smartly under Seamie Heffernan to race on the front end, the 5-6 favourite was kept company by the Ger Lyons-trained fellow newcomer Tourist (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) and was briefly headed inside the two. Battling against the rail, the 200,000gns Book 1 purchase who races for Coolmore, Westerberg and Brant eked out a half-length success.

“I'd say they are two nice colts and I'd like to own either,” the winning rider said. “He was sleepy and green going to the start, is quick and is going to get quicker. When they are strong like this they can go to Ascot.” Stable representative Chris Armstrong added of the bay, whose sire's eight TDN Rising Stars include the G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Tahiyra (Ire), “He's a smashing colt, he's got plenty of size about him and has a lot of class and speed. He showed a bit of greenness throughout, at home they haven't been off the bridle, and they penny hasn't dropped with this fella yet.”

“There is a lot to like about him,” Armstrong continued. “Seamus thought he had plenty of gears for a horse his size and he cruises very well. We'll try and get one more run into him before Ascot and he's one to look forward to. We thought that trip might have been his minimum but Seamus said he's versatile, five or six and he can go up further. From the three home he was never really travelling, he was a bit lost, but once Seamus got him gathered up he found the line well and kept stretching out. Once the penny drops, he should be lovely at any trip.”

Johannes Brahms becomes the second winner from as many runners and foals of racing age for the
Listed Prix de la Pepiniere and Listed Prix Urban Sea-placed Illaunmore, the leading performer out of the G3 Albany S.-placed Illaunglass (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire}). She is in turn kin to the Listed Heron S. winner and G1 Criterium International-placed Redolent (Ire) (Redback {GB}) and to the listed scorer and G3 Summer S. third Pepita (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}). Also related to the G1 Flying Five runner-up Son Of Rest (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Forest Flower (Green Forest), Illaunmore's yearling filly is by Camelot (GB).

Derby Favorite Forte Scratched By State Veterinarians After Morning Gallop

Kentucky Derby morning line favorite Forte is out of the race, according to multiple media outlets on the ground at Churchill Downs, following an examination by state veterinarians Saturday morning.

The Todd Pletcher trainee galloped at around 7:45 a.m. and was seen by state veterinarians afterwards. Dr. Nick Smith watched the horse jog multiple times and consulted with Pletcher and owner Mike Repole before the decision was made to scratch the horse.

Rumors had swirled for the past several days on social media about Forte's status, but Pletcher told the Louisville Courier-Journal on Friday that the colt seemed fine and plans were full steam ahead.

With the defection, the Derby field is now reduced to 18. Skinner was scratched on Friday due to an elevated temperature.

Forte came to the race from a gutsy win in the Grade 1 Florida Derby, which had followed an impressive performance in the G2 Fountain of Youth and before that, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He has won six of his seven lifetime starts.

This is a breaking news story and more information will be added as it becomes available.

106,381 On Hand For Kentucky Oaks; Record $74.9 Million Wagered

Churchill Downs Inc. announced a new Kentucky Oaks race card handle record at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., as Pretty Mischievous captured the Lilies in the 149th running of America's premier race for 3-year-old fillies in a field of 14 and fast track conditions. Under sunny skies, 106,381 spectators gathered under the historic Twin Spires to watch the race.

Wagering from all sources on the full Kentucky Oaks day race card set a new record of $74.9 million beating last year's record of $74.6 million. All-sources wagering on the Kentucky Oaks race was $22.4 million compared to the record of $24.3 million set in 2022.

Pretty Mischievous, owned and bred by Godolphin, trained by Brendan Walsh, and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, stormed to the finish line to win the Grade 1 Longines Kentucky Oaks by a neck at odds of 10-1 and with a final time of 1.49.77. This was the first time the Kentucky Oaks trophy was won by Godolphin, Walsh, and Gaffalione. The Kentucky-bred filly was sired by Spendthrift Farm's stallion Into Mischief and now has lifetime earnings of $1.27 million.

“Congratulations to the connections of Pretty Mischievous on today's win,” said Churchill Downs racetrack president Mike Anderson. “The 149th Kentucky Oaks will be remembered as a memorable day of racing on a near-perfect Kentucky day. Today's success should be attributed to our fans, sponsors, horsemen, horseplayers, and all participants of this distinguished racing tradition.”

CDI continued using Kentucky Oaks as a platform to raise money for women's health initiatives, and welcomed 149 breast and ovarian cancer survivors to walk the historic racetrack prior to the running of Longines Kentucky Oaks for the 15th Survivors Parade. The 149 participating survivors were chosen for the first time by random selection to ensure greater equity and opportunity among nominees. This year's moving tradition was emphasized by the first-ever live performance during the Kentucky Oaks Survivors Parade as singer-songwriter Rachel Platten serenaded the survivors with her chart-topping hit “Fight Song,” an uplifting message of hope, courage, and strength.

Churchill Downs' Oaks charitable beneficiaries were Derby Divas representing the Norton Cancer Institute and Horses and Hope representing the Kentucky Cancer Program. Since its inception, the Oaks Survivors Parade charitable initiative has raised over $1 million for women's health advocacy providing preventative access to underserved women throughout Kentucky, including those who work in the equine industry.
