“She Looked Like A Moose At The Sales” – Group 1 Plans For 5k Purchase

Bloodstock agent Stephen Hillen has recalled how Sunday's G2 Dahlia S. winner Via Sistina (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) would not have won any beauty pageants as a yearling but revealed a certain amount of thinking-outside-of-the-box has led to him dreaming of big-race riches with the George Boughey-trained mare.

Via Sistina couldn't have been more impressive at Newmarket on Sunday. She travelled into the race like a dream under Jamie Spencer, a good friend of Hillen's, and won going away by six lengths without having to be asked too many questions in the saddle.

It was a performance that screamed quality and Hillen, who is better known for finding top-notch prospects for clients in his role as a bloodstock agent, is being rewarded for playing the long game with the horse he picked up for just 5,000gns at the December Yearling Sales in 2019.

“She was a giant as a yearling,” Hillen recalled. “She is probably close to 17 hh at present. But she looked like a moose at the sales–big and backward.

“Those Fastnet Rocks can be an acquired taste sometimes but she has grown into herself and you wouldn't call her an unattractive mare now.”

He added, “I often buy a filly one year and flip it the next and we've raced good fillies like Haggle (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) before.

“There have been several fillies we have done the job with, in that we bought them without black-type and, once we got it, sold them on the following year.

“Listen, I like to race them and, if I spot something I like and have no order to fill, I'll just buy it within reason.”

Via Sistina races in the colours of Hillen's wife Becky. Those purple and pink silks were also carried by Haggle, Four White Socks (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and Banzari (GB) (Motivator {GB}), while Hillen has been involved with classy fillies Statement (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) and La  Dragontea (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) as well.

Hillen is in little doubt that there is more to come from his latest runner and confirmed that Via Sistina will not be sold on until the end of this campaign at least. The G1 Pretty Polly S. awaits.

He said,  “Jamie was very positive about her but he's always loved that filly ever since he got on her. She'd been threatening to do something like that but you just don't expect it. Jamie even went to Toulouse to ride her last year.

“Ordinarily, he wouldn't go all the way there for a Group 3, but I was just fearful if something went wrong and I really wanted to win a Group race with her. It was at the end of the year, too, which is why she may not have been as impressive as she can be that day, and she was also a bit keen on a tight track.”

Hillen added, “That was only her ninth start on Sunday-some horses run nine times in a year. We'll probably race her until the end of the year at least and then make a plan. We're going to try and have a bit of fun with her. If the ground is on the slow side, she'll probably go to the Pretty Polly. She's a Group 2 winner now so the natural step is to go and try and win a Group 1. It's exciting. It would be a dream to win a Group 1 with her.”

WATCH: Forte Moving ‘Very Comfortably,’ Will Work Friday Or Saturday Toward Start In Preakness Stakes

Forte, last year's 2-year-old champion who beat Kentucky Derby winner Mage in the Curlin Florida Derby (G1) and Fountain of Youth (G2), galloped at Churchill Downs Monday morning for an anticipated run in Preakness Stakes 148 at Pimlico Race Course May 20. Forte was scratched the morning of Saturday's Kentucky Derby (G1), for which he was favored, with the remnants of a foot bruise sustained earlier in the week.

“He looked very good,” Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher said. “He galloped a mile and three-eighths very comfortably. Seemed happy like he normally is. He'll work probably Friday or Saturday.”

Asked if there was any sign left of the bruise, Pletcher said, “No, I think that's completely subsided now. Right now, I'd say we're looking good to breeze for the Preakness. If we're happy with that, that's what we're thinking.”

Of being scratched from the Derby, “I'm mostly disappointed for the Violas and the Repoles and the horse himself,” Pletcher said, referencing owners Vinnie Viola and Mike Repole and their families. “As we know, you've got to be good on the one particular day, and there are no makeups. We've just got to adjust, move on and focus on trying to prepare him the best we can for the Preakness.”

Pletcher, who has won the Kentucky Derby twice and the Belmont Stakes four times, will be seeking his first success in the Preakness should Forte be entered as expected.

‘God Answered All The Prayers’: Injured Apprentice Mauro Cedillo Should Make Full Recovery

Apprentice jockey Mauro Cedillo, severely injured in an accident during the first race on May 1 at JACK Thistledown in North Randall, Ohio, has been removed from a ventilator and is able to breathe on his own, according to a report from the Thoroughbred Daily News.

Agent Luis Quinones told TDN that doctors believe Cedillo will make a full recovery, and may even be able to ride again.

“I just want to let you know that Mauro Cedillo was taken off the ventilator (Sunday) and he was breathing on his own,” Quinones told TDN. “He stood up and was walking good today and he was moving his hands. Everything is going to be ok, according to the doctors. God answered all the prayers.”

Cedillo, a 24-year-old native of Guatemala, was thrown from his mount, Spectacular Road, who stumbled in the run down the backstretch while racing on the lead in a $5,000 claiming race. The rider was catapulted forward over Spectacular Road's neck, then appeared to be struck by either his mount's hind legs or by a horse immediately behind him.

Spectacular Road continued racing and was eventually caught by an outrider.

Cedillo was a rising star on the Ohio circuit, winning the fall riding title at Mahoning Valley in 2022 and finishing fifth in the standings earlier this year.

‘I Don’t Know Whether To Laugh, Cry, Or Enjoy It’: Frankie Dettori Launches Farewell Tour With Classic Victory

Frankie Dettori's farewell tour has well and truly started, with the Italian guiding Andrew Balding's Chaldean to QIPCO 2000 Guineas success on a wet day on the Rowley Mile.

“To cap off my last season with a Classic is beyond my wildest dreams, especially after what happened at Newbury last time,” Dettori told Racing Post. “My emotions are all over the place. I don't know whether to laugh, cry or enjoy it. I'm so messed up at the moment – let me soak it all in!

Some would've wondered what might've been for Dettori when he hit the post earlier in the card, losing out by a head aboard Saga for The King and Queen Consort on Coronation Day. However, Chaldean's persistence in the Group 1 gave Frankie a fairytale QIPCO 2000 Guineas victory on his last year in the saddle.

The pre-race talk had been largely about Aidan O'Brien's Auguste Rodin, who went off favourite, but he didn't live up to his 'Triple Crown' potential when finishing 12th of a field of 14. Oisin Murphy and Hi Royal finished second with huge odds of 125/1, shared most of the running with the winner, before the Juddmonte horse stormed clear of the field. Royal Scotsman who raced keenly, ran an enormous race to finish in third place.

A jubilant Dettori saluted the crowd on his way into the Winners Enclosure, before delivering his iconic Flying Dismount.

It gave Dettori a fourth QIPCO 2000 Guineas victory, who said: “It [the emotion] has really hit me now – I've got a lump in my throat. It's incredible.”

It's safe to say Chaldean's prep didn't quite go to plan, when chucking off Dettori when leaving the stalls in The Greenham Stakes at Newbury. It didn't look to have an effect with the son of Frankel completing an across-the-card double for trainer Andrew Balding.
