Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Will Have Presence At 2023 Preakness Stakes

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will be on-site this year with several activations during Preakness week. The 148th Preakness Stakes will take place at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, May 20, 2023.

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will kick off the week with America's Best Racing's Pre-Preakness Party. The eighth annual Pre-Preakness Party will be held on Wednesday, May 17, at the Mt. Washington Tavern in Baltimore, Maryland. The evening will consist of networking, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, an entertaining handicapping challenge with guest analysts, and a silent auction. All proceeds of the party and auction will benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. Tickets are still available online at: www.eventbrite.com/e/8th-annual-pre-preakness-party-by-thoroughbred-aftercare-alliance-abr-tickets-596988597967

Throughout the race days of Preakness week, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance supporters 1/ST RACING, Maryland Jockey Club, and Pimlico Race Course will promote aftercare awareness.

“We are excited to have such an important organization celebrate Preakness weekend with us,” said Georganne Hale, Vice President of Racing Development of Maryland Jockey Club. “The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is so important for the industry, and we are happy to showcase them when all eyes are on Preakness!”

On Friday, May 19, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will be recognized with a named race on the undercard of Black-Eyed Susan Day. Following the running of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance race, a presentation will be made to the winning connections including a branded blanket and swag bag.

On Saturday, May 20, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will present the Sir Barton Stakes Sponsored by Brandon and Diannah Perry to Benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. Paragon Farms, founded by Thoroughbred owners and breeders, Brandon and Diannah Perry, entered into an agreement to annually donate $100,000 to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance as the title sponsor of the Sir Barton Stakes for three consecutive years beginning with the Preakness 147. Following the running of the race, a presentation will be made to the winning connections including a branded blanket and swag bag, as well as a check presentation to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance from Paragon Farms.

On both Black-Eyed Susan and Preakness Day, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will host the Best Turned Out Awards in the Pimlico Race Course winner's circle for each race. Additionally, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will have an information table to learn more about accredited aftercare and to make a donation in exchange for branded merchandise and Preakness-day memorabilia.

Throughout the week, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will facilitate winning guests from one of the VIP experiences auctioned off earlier this year in the “Off to the Races” campaign, promoting aftercare awareness. In addition to the Pre-Preakness Party and a weekend of racing, this experience also includes a sunrise tour, the Alibi Breakfast, and access to join the simulcast for a race on the Black-Eyed Susan undercard. Finally, the guests will also join the winner's circle for the Sir Barton Stakes on Preakness Day. This experience celebrating the second leg of the Triple Crown was generously donated by 1/ST RACING and America's Best Racing.

“The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is extremely appreciative of how the 1/ST RACING has always opened its arms to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance,” said Jeffrey Bloom, President of Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and Managing Director of Bloom Racing Stable. “Being a part of major race days is important to highlight that we as an industry are behind the care and welfare of our horses, and we are once again delighted to be representing our 81 accredited organizations across North America throughout Preakness week.”

Jockey Of The Week: Javier Castellano ‘So Thankful’ For First Kentucky Derby Win

Did that really happen or was it a dream,” asked Javier Castellano after winning horseracing's most coveted prize, the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby.

Castellano also won the G2 American Turf on Saturday, leading the panel of racing experts to unanimously vote him the honor of Jockey of the Week for May 1 through May 7. The award recognizes jockeys for riding accomplishments and who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.

Castellano's “dream” day began with the win in the G2 American Turf aboard Webslinger for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse. Racing in sixth on the outside after the half, Castellano launched his rally and caught Far Bridge in the final strides to win by a nose in 1:41.54 for the mile and one-sixteenth turf test and returning $47.34.

“I am so grateful that Mark (Casse) gave me the opportunity to ride this horse today,” said Castellano. “At Keeneland, he learned a lot when he finished third, and he broke so well coming out of the gate today.”

That race was just the prelude to the feature race of the day, the G1 Kentucky Derby. Breaking from post position eight in the field of 18, Mage had only three horses beaten heading into the backstretch. Castellano began to weave his way through traffic as Two Phil's with Jareth Loveberry raced along the rail leading the way on the far turn. Mage started to roll entering the stretch with dead aim on the leader. Mage took over leaving the eighth pole and carried Castellano to his long-overdue first Kentucky Derby victory in 2:01.57 for the mile and one-quarter. Two Phil's finished second with Angel of Empire completing the trifecta. Mage returned $32.52 to his believers.

“I'm so thankful for the opportunity to ride this horse,” the four-time Eclipse Award winner Castellano said, clearly emotional. “The whole team gave me the opportunity to ride this horse in the biggest race in the world. I had a lot of confidence in myself this year would be the year. This horse was unbelievable today. It's such a great feeling.”

Making the victory all the more satisfying is the fact that both the trainer of Mage, Gustavo Delgado, Sr. and Castellano are natives of Maracaibo, Venezuela.

“Javier is almost family; his father rode for (Delgado, Sr.), said Gustavo Delgado, Jr. “The exercise rider (J.J. Delgado) rode with Javier's dad. It felt like our own little family in this.”

Mage is scheduled to travel to Baltimore for the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on Saturday, May 20.

Other contenders for Jockey of the Week were Junior Alvarado who won the G1 Churchill Downs Stakes with Cody's Wish, Tyler Gaffalione who won the G1 Kentucky Oaks with Pretty Mischievous, Irad Ortiz, Jr. with three graded stakes wins including the G1 Turf Classic, and John Velazquez who won the G1 La Troienne.

Opening Day At Monmouth: Eight Sophomores Entered In Saturday’s Long Branch Stakes

Eight 3-year-olds – two trained by Butch Reid – were entered for Saturday's $100,000 Long Branch Stakes, the feature race on the opening day program for Monmouth Park's 78th season of Thoroughbred racing in Oceanport, N.J.

A total of 90 horses (not counting five alternates) were entered for the 10 races following Tuesday's draw.

The 87th running of the Long Branch Stakes, contested at a mile and 70 yards, will go as race eight. First race post time is 12:40 for Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Monday cards. When Friday racing gets underway in June first race post time for those days will be 2 p.m.

Didinger, a Kentucky-bred son of Bolt d'Oro, heads the Reid-trained duo, coming in off a victory in an allowance optional claimer at Parx on March 27 in his seasonal debut. Reid has also entered Ninetyprcentmaddie, a Pennsylvania-bred son of Weigelia who has four wins and two seconds from eight career starts.

The Long Branch Stakes field from the rail out consists of Slip Mahoney, No Confession, Coffeewithchris, Howgreatisnate, Didinger, Offaly Cool, Ninetyprcentmaddie and Hayes Strike.

Slip Mahoney, trained by Brad Cox, was a trouble-filled sixth in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial in his most recent start. Hayes Strike, trained by Ken McPeek, is just 2-for-10 lifetime but was third in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes and second in the Grade 3 Street Sense, both last year. He was seventh in his most recent start – the Grade 1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes.

Monmouth Park's 51-day meet will feature 48 stakes races worth more than $7.7 million. Ten are graded stakes. The Grade 1, $1 million TVG.com Haskell Stakes again serves as the headliner for the summer on July 22. The Grade 1 United Nations will also be contested that day.
