Songline Overhauls Sodashi In Final Strides Of Victoria Mile

Sunday Racing Co. Ltd.'s 5-year-old Songline overtook defending winner Sodashi in the final yards to prevail by a head in the  $2.1-million Victoria Mile (G1) for older fillies and mares Sunday at Tokyo Racecourse.

With the victory, Songline, ridden by Keita Tosaki and trained by Toru Hayashi, gained an automatic starting position and fees paid into the $2-million Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In.

Under drizzling conditions, Songline, the 7-1 fourth choice in the 16-horse field, broke smoothly from post 6 and settled into midpack along the rail through the first half-mile, just behind the 5-2 favorite Stars on Earth, while Kentucky-bred longshot Lotus Land set the pace. Sodashi, the 4-1 third choice who was a two-length winner of last year's Victoria Mile, broke from the far outside post 16 but quickly gained a position just behind Lotus Land.

Advancing to sixth entering the lane, Songline got into high gear behind Stars on Earth and passed her before the 200-meter pole. At that point, Sodashi finally put away a determined Lotus Lane and appeared headed for the winner's circle, but Songline surged brilliantly between those two in the last 100 meters to steal the victory, scoring by a head.

Stars on Earth, last year's Yushun Himba (G1) (Japanese Oaks) winner, closed well for third, three-quarters of a length behind Sodashi, followed by Divina, Sound Vivace, and Lotus Land in sixth.

“Though we had to race further back and inward than planned, we were able to race in good position while eyeing the race favorites,” Tosaki said. “The track was a little heavy due to the rain, but she responded strongly in the straight. It was a close race, but I was pretty sure we crossed the wire in front. I knew that Songline has a strong ability so I'm really happy we were able to win the race.”

Capturing her second Group 1 victory, Songline, a daughter of Kizuna out of Luminous Parade, by Symboli Kris S, completed the mile in 1:32.2 over a course listed as good to firm. Bred by Northern Farm, Songline, who finished fifth in last year's Victoria Mile, improved her record to six wins in 14 starts.

After claiming the Yasuda Kinen (G1) last June at Tokyo, which earned her an automatic berth into the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile (G1), Songline finished fifth in the Sankei Sho Centaur Stakes (G2) in September. She was scheduled to run in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland, but the trip was canceled due to an epiglottis inflammation. This year, in her previous start, she was unable to defend her title in the 1351 Turf Sprint (G3) on Feb. 25 in Saudi Arabia, finishing 10th of 11.

Songline joins Make it Snappy, winner of the Cartier Paddock Stakes (G1) in South Africa in January, as the first two runners to earn free berths in the Filly ans Mare Turf through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 80 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held Nov. 3-4 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California.

As a part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for Songline to start in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, which will be run at 1 1/4 miles at Santa Anita. Breeders' Cup will also provide a travel allowance for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships.

Frankel’s Jannah Rose Takes The Saint-Alary

Sent off the 8-5 favourite for a competitive renewal of ParisLongchamp's G1 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary, Al Shira'aa Farms' Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Sophie Germain {Ire}, by Indian Ridge {Ire}) duly affirmed her abundant quality with a success that was as smooth as it gets in these demanding conditions. Switched off early by Christophe Soumillon, the unbeaten G3 Prix Vanteaux winner was coaxed to the front 300 metres from the line and asserted for a 3/4-of-a-length verdict over Elusive Princess (Fr) (Martinborough {Jpn}), who in turn avenged her G3 Prix Cleopatre defeat by Crown Princesse (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) by a short head.

“She is a top filly,” trainer Carlos Laffon Parias said of the €650,000 Goffs Orby purchase. “To win that group 3 last time out on only her second start was already an accomplishment and I knew she would have no problem staying an extra furlong. She looked the winner two out and I had some thoughts earlier in the week to run her in the Pouliches, but this race looked weaker and obviously the winner of the Guineas is a very good one. If the Guineas winner runs in the Diane, we will meet her there and it will be a sensational Classic. She is learning and is more relaxed–she is gaining experience and this will only make her stronger.”

Churchill’s Blue Rose Cen Dominates The Pouliches

There were no complications other than a slightly tardy break for Yeguada Centurion SL's Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}–Queen Blossom {Ire}, by Jeremy) in Sunday's G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches as the admirably straightforward as well as high-class 3-5 favourite ruled the roost once again at ParisLongchamp. Needing stoking up at the start by Aurelien Lemaitre to race in the box seat behind the leader Sauterne (Fr) (Kingman {GB}), the homebred who had mastered the course-and-distance G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and G3 Prix de la Grotte attacked that rival with 300 metres remaining and was soon in command. At the line, the pride of the Christopher Head stable had 1 3/4 lengths to spare over the Prix de la Grotte runner-up Lindy (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), with Sauterne clinging on for third, 1 1/4 lengths further behind.

“I don't think that the magnitude of this success has sunk in yet–it's really incredible,” Christopher Head said. “She is a filly I adore. She's got tougher with time and the is the Prix de Diane now. Her pedigree suggests she will be able to go longer. We could have contemplated going for the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, but it's better to stick with the French programme.”

Christophe Ferland said of Lindy, “She ran a blinder. I was convinced she had a great chance and she was slightly caught for speed early in the race and it took her time to find her best stride. She finished strongly and proved she will stay, so the Prix de Diane will be her next race.”

Poulains Glory For Muhaarar’s Marhaba Ya Sanafi

There was a surprise in store in Sunday's G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains as Jaber Abdullah's Marhaba Ya Sanafi (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}–Danega {GB}, by Galileo {Ire}) edged out Isaac Shelby (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) to provide his owner-breeder and trainer Andreas Schutz with a red-letter day at ParisLongchamp. Sitting handy in fourth early under Mickael Barzalona, the relative of Galileo's luminary Soldier Of Fortune (Ire) who was second to American Flag (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in the course-and-distance G3 Prix de Fontainebleau last month surrendered first run to Isaac Shelby in the straight. Wearing down that rival inside the last 75 metres, the 26-1 shot asserted for a short-neck success, with TDN Rising Star Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) two lengths away in third.

The 3-5 favourite American Flag had no excuses in fifth in a renewal cut to nine after KHK Racing's TDN Rising Star Knight (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) was a withdrawal at the start. “We were hoping to finish in the first five, so to win is unbelievable,” Schutz said. “I was also hoping for more rain. He had worked well in the company of my other horses, but I don't necessarily have much to go on. I have been in France for seven years now and I hope that this victory will mark a new turning point in my career. I need to speak to the jockey and the owner, but he's in the [G1 Prix du] Jockey Club and that looks like the most logical target.”

Confined to maiden and conditions events prior to the Fontainebleau, Marhaba Ya Sanafi made his debut over nine furlongs here in October and followed a fourth there with a win at a mile on Chantilly's Polytrack the following month. Back with another win over that same course, distance and surface when nosing out the Fabrice Chappet-trained Bless (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}) in March, the bay didn't appear to have any excuses as American Flag rushed by late in his first black-type test and was understandably overlooked. Finding improvement as the Fontainebleau winner possibly under-performed, his inherent stamina was telling late on as Isaac Shelby stepped beyond seven furlongs for the first time.

Brian Meehan said of the runner-up, “We were a bit frustrated by the lack of pace, especially in the first part of the race. He hasn't shown the full extent of his talent yet. The best is yet to come, especially in races where there will be more pace. We are thinking of Royal Ascot, and in particular the St James's Palace Stakes.” Alessandro Botti is also bound for the Royal meeting with Breizh Sky. “My horse ran on well, but I think the draw maybe cost us a better placing,” he said. “I don't think he will stay further and the [G3] Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot will be next.”

Marhaba Ya Sanafi becomes the second top-level and 10th group winner for his sire, whose progeny show a marked preference for this type of testing ground. The unraced dam, who is also responsible for a 2-year-old filly by Acclamation (GB), was a 58,000gns purchase by Rabbah Bloodstock at the 2016 Tatts December Sale but has already been re-sold as Duncan McGregor presciently snapped up a bargain at €16,000 at the most recent edition of Goffs November. Danega hails from a distinguished Jim Bolger family which features the aforementioned G1 Irish Derby hero Soldier Of Fortune and the G1 Gran Criterium winner and Irish Derby runner-up and successful jumps sire Sholokhov (Ire) (Sadler's Wells).

The second dam is the G3 Noblesse S. winner and G2 Lancashire Oaks runner-up Danelissima (Ire) (Danehill), who produced the G3 Ballysax S. runner-up Fergus McIver (Ire) by Sadler's Wells and is a full-sister to the G3 Railway S.-placed Daneleta (Ire). She is in turn responsible for Bolger's G1 Dewhurst S.-winning sire Intense Focus (Giant's Causeway) and is the ancestress of the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy) and last year's G3 Flame of Tara S. scorer Aspen Grove (Ire) (Justify) and Listed Washington Singer S. winner Victory Dance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).
