Angel Of Empire, Rocket Can Among Quartet To Train Saturday During Churchill’s Special Time For Derby/Oaks Hopefuls

Two weeks remain until the $3-million Kentucky Derby (G1) and it was a quiet Saturday morning at Churchill Downs where only four Derby hopefuls trained during the special 15-minute period reserved for Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks (G1) contenders from 7:30-7:45 a.m. (ET).

TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) runner-up Disarm and Holy Bull (G3) winner Rocket Can galloped about 1 ½ miles at 7:30 a.m. while Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Angel of Empire and Wood Memorial (G2) runner-up Hit Show jogged about one mile.

The quiet Saturday morning was the opposite of last year on this day when eight Derby and Oaks contenders recorded published workouts. However, five Kentucky Derby contenders recorded published workouts Friday: Angel of Empire (six furlongs, 1:13.40); Forte (five furlongs, 1:02); Hit Show (five furlongs, 1:01); Tapit Trice (four furlongs, :48.60), and Verifying (five furlongs, 1:01).

Rocket Can, trained by Bill Mott, is scheduled to breeze Sunday while the next workouts for Rebel (G2) winner Confidence Game and Blue Grass (G1) fourth-place finisher Sun Thunder are still to be determined, according to their respective connections.

Sunland Park Derby (G3) winner Wild On Ice had an easy day in Barn 43 for trainer Joel Marr following his two-mile gallop Friday. Marr said Wild On Ice could work again Thursday or Friday.

Japan-bred UAE Derby (G2) winner Derma Sotogake  and Japan-bred third-place finisher Continuar had a regular training day Saturday. Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby representative Kate Hunter stated Friday on “Inside Churchill Downs” that the duo could record published workouts early next week.

Monday will begin the first of 11 days for the Kentucky Derby Morning Works Show presented by TwinSpires.com featuring expert handicappers Joe Kristufek, Scott Shapiro, and Kaitlin Free along with an array of popular industry figures such as former leading rider Rosie Napravnik and Churchill Downs Track Announcer Travis Stone.

The one-hour program will be streamed live on www.KentuckyDerby.com/works from 7-8 a.m. starting Monday and will feature the 15-minute exclusive training period for Kentucky Derby and Oaks contenders from 7:30-7:45 a.m. Fans can also watch the broadcast across several of the Kentucky Derby social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Zarak’s Village Voice Another For Harrington In The Salsabil

Hot on the heels of Ocean Quest (Ire) (Sioux Nation) tearing up the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Committed S., Village Voice (GB) (Zarak {Fr}–Sensible Way, by Street Sense) brought up a black-type double for the Jessica Harrington stable in Navan's Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Salsabil S. Anchored in rear early by Ronan Whelan in the 10-furlong Oaks trial, the 7-1 shot who had been third in the G3 Eyrefield S. at Leopardstown in October was threaded through a gap on the rail to overhaul the 11-10 favourite Jackie Oh (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) 150 yards out and score by 3/4 of a length, with 2 3/4 lengths back to the fellow Harrington-trained pace-setter Foniska (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in third.

“She loved the going and ground it out well–Jessie's horses couldn't be in better form,” Whelan said. “She was running a big race in the Eyrefield, but got a big bump on the bend and ran out of steam at the end.” Assistant trainer Kate Harrington added, “I'd imagine we will go [G2] Ribblesdale now. It has been a good day and a great tonic for mum.”

The dam Sensible Way (Street Sense) is a daughter of Nasheej (Swain {Ire}), who captured the G2 May Hill S., G3 Fred Darling S. and G3 Sweet Solera S. and was third in the G1 1000 Guineas, G1 Coronation S. and G1 Fillies' Mile. From the family of the G2 Champions Juvenile S. winner and Derby runner-up Madhmoon (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) and the legendary Seattle Slew, her 2-year-old filly is by French Navy (GB).

Sioux Nation’s Ocean Quest Impresses In The Committed

Last seen being inched out by Treasure Trove (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) in The Curragh's G3 Round Tower S. in August, Ocean Quest (Ire) (Sioux Nation) returned with a vengeance at Navan on Saturday to stamp her authority on the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Committed S. Held together early by Shane Foley racing freely in third, the 10-1 shot brushed aside Aesop's Fables (Ire) (No Nay Never) passing two out en route to a categoric six-length dismissal of that G2 Futurity S.-winning TDN Rising Star, with the 4-5 favourite The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) 3/4 of a length away in third.

“She is a very good filly and Jessie [Harrington] was contemplating stepping up to seven or a mile, but she has a lot of natural speed and was even keen there despite the fact that we were skipping along,” Foley said of the winner, the first part of a listed double for the in-form stable on the card. “She has thickened into a fine filly and is quite keen and forward-going at home and even going down today took me on for the first furlong–she has to have things her way.”

Assistant trainer Kate Harrington added, “She was going to the [G1] Cheveley Park last year and she pulled a muscle the week before, so we put her away for the rest of the season. We knew she was good last year–she won the first two-year-old race of the season and we bided our time with her and let her strengthen up. She'll go to the [G1] Commonwealth Cup, that's what mum said on the phone! Obviously, mum will have a chat with the owners and everything, but it looks like the likely aim at the moment.”

Ocean Quest, who was also third in the valuable Irish EBF Ballyhane S. at Naas at the start of August, is the second foal out of a daughter of the Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial scorer and G3 Bahrain Trophy third Zain Al Boldan (GB) (Poliglote {GB}) who also produced the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen winner Poetic Dream (Ire) (Poet's Voice {GB}) and G3 Prix Francois Boutin scorer Who Knows (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). Her 2-year-old filly Ocean Bliss (Ire) is by El Kabeir, while she also has a yearling filly by Raven's Pass.
